I think, like you say, it is age dependent. There were no camera phones or barely any video recording devices that were portable and small, back in the day, so a lot of it went undocumented. Cameras used to take film rolls, that had to be taken in for developing, so the instant gratification of seeing the pictures, was maybe 7 days later.
