The fall of Stromguard Keep (Part 1 of Jayce's background)

"Jayce, we shouldn't be here, father will be mad." The sound of Elis', Jayce's 10 year old sister, whining voice assaulted his own 12 year mind. Eerrgggh, she didn't have to come with me, he thought to himself. But no. Mother said, keep an eye on your younger sister. Balderdash.

The 12 year old noble's son had fair black hair, and hazel eyes, and was already threatening to be taller then his father, standing at 5'10". He took more after his mother then his father, and many young serving girls were already whispering at what a handsome young man he would become. His sister though took more from their father. With golden blond hair and sea-green eyes, she was already making many a man's head turn.

"Its alright. Father will never know we were here. I just want to see what he has locked behind this secret door." Well it was suppose to be a secret, but Jayce had sneaked around one night and saw his father open the door, and ever since then he wondered what was behind it. I mean, there wasn't a whole lot to do being the son of a noble Mage and the Cousin of the Queen. Except a whole butch of boring stuff. So Jayce tried to learn the way in, and last night, he found an old book he was sure that held the answer. Also something he wasn't suppose to do, but dabit all, he was so bored!

"But-" Elis whined again, but Jayce turned on her and snapped in a very unbecoming voice.

"Shut up! I promise nothing will happen to you. Or you can go back and play with those dolls of yours." The way he said dolls showed what he thought of the very extravagant gifts the Queen had given to his sister on her last birthday. The dolls cost more then most citizens of the kingdom could ever hope to make in their lifetimes.

His sister shut her mouth and stood there, wanting to pout, but did nothing else. Jayce smiled, glanced around the hallway. Good, no one was around. He walked as sneakily as he could, for a 12 year boy, and looked at the wall in front of him. It looked like any other stone wall in any other part of the Stromguard keep. But Jayce knew there was something back there. Remembering the way the book described how to pen the portal-way, he placed his hands on the cold stone wall, closed his eyes, and muttered the magical words.

"Lyo Dath Vor Kes Lathien."

Jayce open his eyes and saw... the wall. Nothing had happen. He was sure he got it right.

"Idiot." His sister said. Pushed him out of the way she placed her hands on the wall the same way Jayce had done, and spoke the words he had said. Only correctly this time.

"Lio Drah Vi Cos Lascern."

A blue outline of a portal began to glow before them, and soon they could see a room on the other side. "You never do pay attention to your studies." Elis said as she turn around to beam a most gloating smile at her taller brother.

"Yeah, well magic is boring. I want to be a knight..." Jayce said as he pushed his sister aside and walked in. He could feel powerful magic in here. But he wasn't worried. The book had said that the portal, like any magical defenses would be keyed to the Stromguard bloodline, and would not attack him or his sister. Or so he hoped.

Most of the room looked like any other magical study he had seen. Magical portions, old dusty tomes of some forgotten kingdom and magics, and other crap that did not interest Jayce in the least. Well all except for one item. On a pedestal in the center of the room, the ground around it covered in runes was a white egg with green spots on it. Jayce smiled. A dragon's egg, he was sure of it!

"Wow." He said as he dashed to the egg and looked at it.

"Jayce I wouldn't touch that. Those runes are meant to keep something in, not out." His sister said from behind him. But he was barely paying her any mind. All he could think about was Dragons! "We should leave, you got to see what was in here, I don't like the feel of this place."

"Oh come on sis, where is your sense of adventure. When do you get to see a real Dragon egg." Jayce reached out with his hands and picked the large egg up and slowly turned to his sister. "Have you ever thought father would work on something like this?" He said, his eyes wide with excitement.

"Jayce put it back!" His sister whined.

"No. I'm not done looking at it." He said as an idea popped into his mischievous mind. "Oh look Elis, I'm going to drop it.. I'm going to drop it..." He said as he fumbled the egg in his hands.

His sister screamed and covered her eyes, crying. "Stop it! Stop it!"

Chuckling and having enough fun, he decided he might as well. He turned to put it back... and tripped. He was still getting use to his tall lanky frame, growing so quickly in the past year, 6 inches alone. And luck was hardly ever his ally.

He fell straight on his face, the egg sailing in the air and shattered again the wall.

"Oh no, Jayce what have you done!" Elis screamed.

"Oh, yes Jayce, what have you done." A bellowing voice answer her. As the egg shattered into thousands of little pieces, whiffs of green smoke started to emerge, and becoming more and more into a solid form. In less then three seconds, standing before them was unlike anything Jayce had ever seen. A light green scaled creature with four fingered talons on each of its four hands, a long pincer tail that swirling behind it, giant wings that spread out so much they filled all the space around it, and a most disgusting point face with dozens of sharp fangs poking out and dark glowing green eyes that seemed to bore into Jayce's soul.

Jayce backed away, panic setting in, as he crawled away from the creature. He saw his sister paralyzed with fear, not moving, her face ashen white instead of its usual porcelain white. "Elis run, get father!"

"Yes, go get your father. The man that thought he could hold the great Ta'Nurak, The Demon-Dragon, forever. He should have destroyed me when he had the chance." The creature bellowed as it took steps towards Jayce and Elis. In a futile attempt to protect his sister, Jayce charged at the thing, only to have one of its arms grab him by his throat and lift him up high.

"I must thank you for freeing me young Stromguard. For that, I shall let you live... and I will also grace you with a gift." He chuckled as the tail shot forth and struck Jayce across his right cheek, leaving a most terrible scar down it. Jayce screamed as he struggled against the hand that held him. Tears pouring down his face from the pain. He opened his eyes wide in fear... only to see nothing but a grayness.

"The poison only blinds. Maybe next time you won't be so eager to see something you shouldn't be looking for." Ta'Nurak tossed Jayce aside and turned to his sister. "My, my. The Stromguard magical blood flows deep in your veins. You... I will also let live."

Even though Jayce could not see, he tried to still fight. "Stay away from her!" He said as he got up, charging in the direction of the demon's voice, only to trip and fall flat on his face.

Ta'Nurak chuckled, grabbed Elis with one of his arms and left the room.

Jayce, tried to find his way back up, hoping somehow to see again. But nothing but blindness met his sight. In the distance he could hear screaming, and shouting. He tried to follow it, but every time he tried to get up and walk, he would only trip once more. Somewhere he could hear his father shouting, calling forth powerful magics as Jayce felt the whole keep shake. There was an explosion, and he could hear crashing and more screaming, this time from his mother... right before he heard it end in a most blood curling end.

Jayce laid on the ground for sometime, even after all the shouting and shaking and explosions stopped. He just cried. What had he done. What in all good gods had he done!!

Jayce Stromguard was the son of a noble mage and the cousin of the queen. He lived his life well, up to the point of his 12th year. Where he snuck into a forbidden/secret room in his family's keep. His father, Jermer Stromguard, who was the mage, had hidden something away there. At first glance, it was a green spotted egg... a very large egg. To trained eyes, it would look like a Dragon's Egg. But only an expert eye in magic would know what was truly different about this egg.

Jayce, followed by his sister Elis, found their way into the room, and Jayce toying with his sister, started to toss the Egg around, just trying to scare her. Only he dropped it, and released a half-dragon/half-demon creature called Ta'Nurak The demon/dragon destroyed his family's keep, killed his folks, stole his sister, and left him in the wreckage, blind with a scar down the side of his face.

Jayce had thought everything was over, he huddled in the ruins of his home, knowing he had been responsible for everyone's death. That was until something that looked like his mother came to tell him otherwise.

The god/goddess Yualin is the god of personal freedom, redemption, good causes, and living life to the fullness. He/She has no gender, only appearing to those as need be. In this case, Jayce needed to hear that he wasn't responsible (though to this day he still seeks atonement for what had occurred.), that mistakes happen with those with free will. If he so wished, he could become a champion in his/her name, to fight the injustices in the world, free those enslaved, and to live his life as if nothing had happen. The god in his mother's form healed his eyes so he could see again, and sent him on his path...

And so Jayce left the place of his birth, traveled to Onrio, a nearby city, where he found the Church of Yuanlin, and entered their services to train to become a champion of freedom.

After 6 years he left, becoming a Paladin in the service of Yualin, and went out to right wrongs, free the enslaved (where he could, Yuanlin knows that it takes more then one man to wage war, so she allows leeway for those in her service to take their time, and work the "system" as best they can), and to just live life.

One thing I think everyone should at least think about is how they would like to have met up with the Paladin, at one point in their life. I have some ideas, and will start pming them soon (tomorrow at the latest), but I want to at least brain-storm before hand, so we are on the same page.

Also I have some ideas of maybe a recurring villain or two.
Some pics of at least one villain I am thinking of:

That is some badass armor he made.

Also the whole point of this, at least to me, should be the story. And if I am not holding up to your expectations, KICK ME IN THE EVER LOVING HEAD.

I agree that we should think about what kind of relationship we have with the other characters, not just the paladin, but certainly him. I see him as the leader of the party. But as to how our characters met him, and really, it comes down to how we joined the group.

Maybe we don't have to actually write it right now. It can be useful fodder to write in a flashback post. But we should definitely have an idea in mind of how we met/joined.

Sounds good. For some reason, the idea of everyone gathering around together to compare notes comes to mind ;p

Though as to how everyone came to be there? I think maybe the Paladin called forth for past associates,... and was surprised at whom actually showed up. I can also see him paling as he walks into the tavern thinking.. Oh joy, now they all get to meet up.

I imagined the characters are already formed as a group at the beginning of this adventure. But let's hear from everyone: would it be better to begin with everyone meeting at the beginning of the story, maybe as jack said, with a past? Or should we go ahead and assume they've been together for at least one adventure previous to this?

I was thinking that they are in this town to rest up/recuperate after a strenuous adventure just completed. A little R&R so to speak, and while enjoying herself in a local tavern (more of a seedy dive than the inn we're all staying at) one of the rogue types meets up with a local shady character. The point being that he has an 'in' with the local 'action'. She may flirt with him and get in good with him so he'll trust her enough to show her the real undercover action. That's how the group finds out about the pit fighting matches. Whoever gets this lucky role will be the contact with the slavers for the party, and will lead the group into this situation.

But I'm flexible, drawing back on my gaming days. If a 'gamemaster' can't get the party together and get them started on the adventure anyway, then they don't have much business claiming to be a 'gamemaster'. ;)

Everything looks like it is coming together good. I'm just catching up on the thread so I'll throw my 2 copper pieces in on a few subjects.

As for magical items, I agree with what's said. Mae has a few herself, a major one being her axe which has a name and everything. I'd assume they are somewhat seasoned adventurer's so the gear will be decent. Not that it changes much really.

I like the idea of already knowing each other and having an adventure under their belts. It'll help have some sense of companionship that will help the story start off strong.

How I would love an Intelligent item, but those are actually impossible (or should be ;p) to find.

http://www.journey-quest.com/

Watch that to get an idea of what I think would end up in Jayce's hands.

As a DM once I gave one out. It was a longsword with a horribly bad British accent who hated Grey elves. A party made almost entirely out of elves found it too. It was very comical, at least for me. ;P

You are just evil!

I would think a magic item or two would be reasonably expected. I would probably hesitate at an artifact or intelligent item, other than a familiar for magic using types. If you want to give your item a name, that's up to you. I call my rifle 'ol Henry' in real life. My sister names all her guns, all girl's names: Ramona, Louise, Roxanne, etc. :D

The main thing is, let your character's renown come from their exploits and their personas, not from their items.

Well Mae's axe has a name, Snaga. It is magic but by no means intelligent or an artificat. Though she herself might think its something akin to such. I got the idea from the book Legend, a good read if you ever looking for one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_(novel)

I think that's fine, in fact just what I was meaning. And someday, the axe will be called "Mae's bite" or some such thing, because she will have made it legendary by the way she used it. :) That's what I hope we can do with the adventures.

It would be like Jesse James' pistol. At the time he used it, it was just another pistol like many others. But now it would be priceless, a real artifact. But not because there was anything in particular about the gun itself, but because of who's gun it was, and how they used it. It would be legendary because he was. That's what I was trying to say and didn't do such a good job of it. :)

Well I was thinking today of how my healer character met the paladin, and I have a good idea. But a question occurred to me. In my idea, it only accounted for the paladin and the healer. But what if one or more of the other characters already knew him and was traveling with him at the time?

Anybody have any ideas about how we can determine this?

Well, I sort of hinted that Darya an him met when she was around 16, and he would have been 25 or so..

So, she did travel with him a bit..

this can be altered for any reason, so throw some ideas out there people..

In the idea I had, there could be a good reason for him to be temporarily separated from his companions I suppose. I was going to ask you, Cheska, does your character have any healing type spells?

Cure Light an Cure Moderate. :D

She could only use the healing skills, not magic.
"Remove Disease." is a 3rd level cleric spell.

Well, here is the gist of what I was thinking. The paladin catches a sickness, maybe a fever, that leaves him delirious and he wanders off from the rest of his companions, maybe while he is on watch. Nobody knew he was sick, and the fever comes on quickly.

While he is out wandering about, he encounters a scene of some orcs or bad guys of some stripe attacking the healer. She is wearing a hooded cloak so he doesn't see her clearly, or maybe it's just the fever. He fights off the attackers with the last bit of his rapidly draining strength, the fever and combat exhausting him to the point of collapse.

The healer takes care of him, nursing him until the fever breaks, even using her body to help keep him warm from the night's chill. At some point, the fever breaks and the paladin awakes to find himself next to a naked woman he doesn't even remember meeting. And to boot, she's not fully human.

At some point after they get to know each other, maybe his other companions find him with her.

Yea! Nekkid elf! .. i mean, very good.

And Ally is a free spirit when it comes to lovers. Imagine an altruistic hippy, and that is how I'm beginning to think of her. I like to let a character sort of 'speak to me' and just try to sense how their 'vibe' comes through. This one is feeling very much like 'Free love', Save the children and the baby whales and seals, etc.'
