Frustrated reader

AsylumSeeker reminds to ask you, sugarisnice, if you are aware of the "Favorites" listing here, where the readers have given their combined opinions of authors worth reading. If you don't know about the list already, go to the main page, click on "Sneak Peek" and then on the left margin click on what is worded something like "old view." This will give you a list of the top 250 authors on the site based on readers listing them as "favorite." You might find authors here who will become favorites of yours too. (AsylumSeeker reminded me of that simply because he sits pretty high on that list.)

Thanks SR, that was nice, thanks for watching my back.

Thanks for the advice. I don't mind cliff-hanger stories, but I do mind stories that have no sex value in them, yet the story is all about a character who is about to get it some how. This is a site for sex stories and yes, there is a non-erotic category, but when a story is in BDSM and it doesn't have any BDSM in it, or if a story is in lesbian sex and there is no lesbian sex in it, or if the story is in non-compliance and, well, you know the trend.

This is the issue. Stories where the author implies there is a big deal going on and yet, nothing happens.

I once had a rejected story, but it was just about four mispelled words. Are there any stories that get rejected here due to a lack of story content?

Frustrated Reader?

I am fairly new to Literotica and have been playing with all the buttons and still don't know how to search the site, but I have found a lot of interesting stuff here. Some are just, what I call ShagWells, (not much plot but pleanty of Shagging) some is just smutty crap, literature wise and some that makes my scalp crawl. But Hey, What ever floats your boat?

I have found a lot of nicely crafted work and it keeps me coming back to learn the craft. In the 2 months since I started posting and reading I have become much more productive as a writer from the stimulation of the 500 or more stories I've read.

If a reader if frustrated with what is on this site, they are not really looking too hard.

What's the point of writing at all if their is no story? Isn't that the objective, to tell a story?

doesn't this require a common definition of 'story'??

i believe what most of you seem to be talking about is not ... does it tell a story... but does it have an involved plot....

many of the titles on the site are scenes... directly focused on giving a short summary of the main characters followed by a scene including sex, and then the better ones usually have a closure..

in many cases, and with the intended audience being... for the purpose of assisting with arousal and sexual pleasure.. many meet that goal... and work fine...

there are also many that do have plots... some are fairly short... some quite involved..
the novella section has plenty of involved plots.. though i find many are so involved in telling the common items they fall short on the sexual tension and actual sex scenes that in my opinion are good erotica.

i have also seen many titles that are posted with very improper chapter breaks.. they either have an information dump, then no current story until another chapter, or they put 3 or 4 chapters into one.. folllowed by something that isn't really a full chapter..

Perhaps the what we need most is the ability to mark/tag things for multiple catagories, and more fluidly edit things so that Titles can be redivided as editing molds a story into a different flow of chapters.

and now as for feedback... well, generally i vote to give the numerical feedback, but i rarely comment directly, often because i have no specific items to suggest improving, also because i don;t know the direction the author will be wanting to go. those should largely be the realm of the editor and Beta reader used to proof the story..

I've never heard of that happening, and I've been around here for most of this century. All the rejects I've been asked to look at have been for technical reasons, like homophones or punctuation.

Freedom of speech, man!

Well, since I 'popped my cherry' by posting a question, I've decided I'm a posting 'slut' afterall. I can't hold back from replying. I've been a reader for a long, long time, but never joined the site until recently.

Anyway, back on topic, I've learned to just move on down the road. I look for stories in only the Top List catagory, and I look only in the the areas I like. That helps a lot. Sometimes I'm amazed at what gets voted highly on, and other times I'm just plain amazed at the awesome writing that is out there! And I get to read it FOR FREE! When I find an author I like I will occasionally read a genre I don't normally find interesting just because the author is so good. Dr. Mabeuse (hope I got that right!) is one of them. Also, I always check out a favorite author's favorites.

But the biggest thing that appeals to me about this site (other than the sex, of course) is how wide open it is. I love the idea of few guard rails in the area of thoughts and ideas. I love that there is a place where anyone at any level can try their hand at creativity. The more the merrier. A true market place of ideas. I would hate to see that curbed in any way.

As a reader you just have to remember that you often get what you pay for. It's free and nobody - nobody - is holding a gun to your head to read anything. Don't like it? Move on!

I've read all the arguments and more or less agree with all of 'em. However - the thing that annoys me is the lack of simple proofreading, e.g. spelling, punctuation, wrong names creeping in, and the use of the wrong (homonym) word. Some of the writing is excellent, some pedestrian, and some just awkward and poor. But I keep reading; I guess that tells you something.

It seems as if many of the stories I click to read are missing something, like a story. The idea may be there, but writers need to know they cannot just start a series with a large intro and then wait for chapter 2 to get into the real meat of the story. You must capture your reader with the first few paragraphs or else they may just click off.

I agree with your first statement. There are quite a few bad stories here. I don't go for "stories' that are basically bad porn. I want a plot and I want characters I can sympathize with. Obviously, I want good sex too, but I want to know why these two (or more) people are having sex. What are they thinking, feeling, etc.

But I don't know if I agree with your second comment. I don't mind a long build up. In fact, sometimes the anticipation is better than the actual sex scene. It all depends on whether it's a well written build up or one that's purely a history or description of all the major characters, as if you were reading a wikipedia entry on them. I want to get to know their thoughts, feelings and personalities by reading a little about their actions.
