Zwarte Piet causes a race row every year in the Netherlands. Is his inclusion in the whole shebang racist or isn't it? The debate becomes more hysterical every year, mainly by Surinamers and white (so called) liberals. It is a white person blackening themselves up that seems to be the real problem so why not get a black person to be zwarte Piet? I've no idea.

I would think it all depends on how the make-up was applied. If it was blackface in the manner of the old minstrel shows, that would be one thing; a person made to appear so soot-encrusted that their actual flesh seems to have darkened from it, would be another thing entirely.

Sint Niklaas day is on December 6th and Sint Niklass rides into town on his horse with his entourage. Christmas Day in the Netherlands is just a religious day you go to church and spend with your family. Though more and more the American Christmas is taking over, which, like the British Christmas, is largely a German invention.

where i am, we've been lucky -lots of rain, soggy greens, wind, some trees down locally, the odd wall and damage to roofs but that's nothing compared to the flooding, coastal wreckage and loss of livelihoods and even life in places.
