For some reason, I can't "start a conversation with JohnMurray4173." I don't know why you would be blocked. Let me ask around and see if I can get some tech support.

Yes, it should say, "Allow user to:" Then there will be an option: "Start conversations with you:" Then you have the option of clicking "Members only" on the far right.

For that other one I sent, "Feedback," I think it goes to your email account if you gave the address to Lit. It may be in the Spam folder.

Why they have to have two methods for this is beyond me, but that's Lit for you. Every site has its quirks.

Okay, I'll send it via a "conversation," which should show up if you click the envelope symbol on the right side of the blue bar at the top of the forums. Not sure why the other message didn't get through, but there have been some software glitches in this site as they attempt to "modernize."

The envelope should say "conversations" as you - what is it called, hover? - your cursor over the symbol. They could make these things a bit more user-friendly.

There are three options, and only the first ( "Members only" ) means you can receive private messages from anybody. The second requires following each other, and the third blocks all incoming private messages.

You may want to check your own settings as well. I'm not sure if setting it to "nobody" will also prevent you from sending messages, as well as blocking messages from other people. I consider this doubtful, because modern forum software usually removes the links to send private messages if you aren't allowed to. Modern software also allows admins to disable private messaging for members, but I consider this unlikely as well."
