Help me pick out an engagement stone

Myst what month are you born in - maybe you could go for your birthstone? I am january which is garnet, I can't remember the full list but if you let me know when your birthday is I'll try and find out if you like.

btw congratulations - I got engaged last june and I'm due to be married this june!!
We had a trip to barcelona as a belated engagement present and I think I am getting some cuffs made specially for me for a prewedding present.

we aren't spending that much on rings as neither one of us wears jewellry but we have found some plain white gold wedding rings which are so much nicer than yellow gold.

Hey baby... i see you're finally making the announcement.
(It's about time. It's been killing me keeping it quiet!)
:D

Okay, here's my take on it, and no! I did not look at all your links cuz there are just too many, MystE. I'm sorry.

The Padparadscha’s are gorgeous but a half carat is just too too too too small!

Personally, I love blue-green sapphires and I’d wear them in a second. They’re my hands-down first choice.

All the garnets are just beautiful, darlin’ but a tad too common, maybe, for such a special ring.

I really love andalusite, the color changes are just stunning, but this stone is another that’s rare and expensive. What’s the carat size on it?

Have you considered tri-colored tourmalines?

Additionally, I can really see you in a fire opal, too. They’re such gloriously saturated stones, darlin’, alive and vibrant and kick-ass gorgeous.

Finally, iolite has a strong color change effect and is a really stunning stone in over 1 carat sizes. You might want to check that one out, too.

Crystalhunting and Harginger and i are Lit's gemstone people. They are professionals; i am merely a somewhat knowledgable collector.

Myst,
I became engaged last Oct. and knew that i definitely wanted something unique as my engagement ring. Originally i had said i wanted an emerald, my birthstone as well as yours. But when Master's mother gave me the most beautiful antique platinum and diamond ring of her's, i knew that it was the only engagement ring i would ever want.

Your choices of stones are wonderful, i can see you've put much though into this. The only advice i can give you is, when you see "the one" you will know it.

My best wishes to you and yours on your upcoming marriage.

P.S.
I did get the emerald ring as a Christmas present.;) :D

I like the Mystic Topaz that you liked to begin with. Who cares if it's foofy??? It's going to be your ring and you're the one that has to be happy with it.

Congrats on your engagement!!! :D When are you getting married???

out of the stones that you posted i like this one the best.

http://www.ajsgems.com/ajs-images/b...nder-1-carat/133-s164-blue-sapphire-large.jpg

it has such a deep, rich, clear blue color.

as for stones other stones you may want to look at...have you looked at an alexandrite. it's a gorgeous dark stone that changes colors in different light. it's something that i think is simply beautiful.

happy hunting and congrats :)

by the way...with the right setting a small stone can look much bigger. my stone is only a little over a half a carat, but the setting it's in makes people think it a full carat. just something to think about.

Okay....I wrote that last post, so why is my name not with it???

May I inject a few ideas Myst?

Perhaps a Watermelon Elabite{also called Watermelon Tourmailine}

or maybe a Black Star Saphhire?

Perhaps a AAA grade Fire Opal might do as well.

Give me time...I will think of a few others.

I will refer this thread to Harbringer.

A Black Star Sapphire. yes, that is Myst. How could i have forgotten about them?
Such sublime beauty, with that secret fire within, flashing out and catching at you.

Whew.....

Myst

I found this on HSN.com... they have a wonderful selection of gemstones...

My birthday is in June, I don't know why it says May. I'll go check it out. CH is helping me! ;)

"Harginger"? " Harbringer"? cymbidia, crystalhunting, *ahem*, you know it makes it sooooo much harder to find out if people are talking about you if they don't spell your nic right.. (thanks for the heads up, CH) Does this mean I've been away too long? What was that guy's name, anyway? Hardbanger? Herb-bringer? Hot Ginger? Oh, fickle, fickle Lit, that doth so soon forget those that loved her. *sigh* :(

Anyway, Myst, when it comes to gems for engagement rings, I'm a big proponent of durability. That means corundum. Blue sapphire, fancy colored sapphire or ruby. I have had a few do ok with tourmaline, which can be pretty durable if you treat it right, and garnet and some others, but we are talking about the long haul, and you will want the gem to remain in wonderful condition, even after years and years of everyday wear. (I'm assuming diamond holds no interest. Boring, but hard as hell. No, wait, that's what my girlfriend says about me!) :D

Choices of colors I don't know if I can help you with, since it's such a personal thing. Make sure you have the right to return it if you don't like what you see. Look at it in direct daylight, indirect daylight, incandescent, and fluorescent. I would be very wary of visibly included stones. Those that have cracks, cloudy areas, or colorless spots. All of those things knock the value way down. True padparadscha sapphire is a particular pinkish-orange, is pretty hard to come by, and always expensive. Top quality pads can go for $5000 - $6000 per carat wholesale. There are lots of pretenders, though.

PM me if you want to know more, Myst. I'll give you a straight answer. crystalhunting will help you, too.
And big congratulations, too, Myst! :rose::rose::rose:

Yours jewel-ly,

Harbinger
;)

You better let us know which one you chose, and the setting, and pictures after it's done.

An details of the wedding. Snifff..... I hate weddings.. Pass the hanky please.

Oh, of course! I was thinking that I should start my own wedding thread in this forum, for those who "hate weddings." ;) I'll show you all the shoes and the dress, and the little things. You all can help me put this show on the road! I do need tons of ideas and inspirations on everything from food to flowers, clothing, outdoor decorations, etc.
