How the H does the H work?

I'm ⅞ certain it can be done.

As opposed to 8/9 certain... :D

Well, I'm 71/80 certain it can be done.

*ahem* Well, if you mean "How to Calculate the Minimum Number of 5 Scores Received"...hell, I'd give it a read just to play with people's numbers until I tell myself I'm neurotic and stop. :) The lack of complete certainty would eventually make me give up.

Shucks—that's easy. If your score is four or less, there's no guarantee that you have any fives at all. If your score is greater than four, just drop the four. Then subtract 0.005 from what remains. After the subtraction, multiply the new number by the number of votes you have. Round the result up. (Yes, 21.03 becomes 22.) The resulting number is the smallest number of fives you can possibly have for the given score and the given number of votes.

Example: Suppose I have a score of 4.33 from 102 votes. Dropping the four leaves 0.33, from which I subtract 0.005 to get 0.325. Then 0.325 times 102 gives 33.15. I need at least 33.15 fives out of 102 votes to get the 4.33. But there are no fractions of votes out there, and 33 will be too small. So I must have at least 34 fives among my 102 votes.

Excellent. Thanks! I can certainly do the math, but I am curious:

Where did the 0.005 figure come from, and why do you subtract it from the percent fraction?

I understand why you drop the 4; whole numbers serve no purpose except to inflate the overall total and obscure the basic formula. I also see why the multiplication of the fraction to the total votes, rounded up, would give you your minimum number of 5-star votes.

It's that 0.005 subtraction; I have no idea where you got that....

And also: what is the 71/80-certainty "How To" note?

If your average works out to 4.325..., it gets rounded up to 4.33. So we need the smallest number of fives that can get you an average of 4.33 – 0.005, or 4.325.

Looks like I left out a sentence in the general recipe. I'll go back and edit that post so that it'll be right.

Just a smart-assed reply to the 7/8 and 8/9 figures that you and Snoop gave.

*rereads* I dunno....I get that first part in the example. That's just doing the math.

But you wrote: "If your score is greater than four, just drop the four. Then subtract 0.005 from what remains."

Why? Why .005 out of any number it could possibly be? (I'm presuming it works for every calculation? Or is it dependent on another factor?)

I'll back myself up here. :D

You said before that smart-assed reply: "Wonder if there's a "How To" note here?"

What "note"? :) I think I made an assumption about what you meant somewhere because our wires got crossed.

ROFLMAO :D

And you can't get that damned little line above the last 9, can you?

Kind of a cheat but hey, thought I'd try and help out because:

  1. You said some encouraging things about my story
  2. You know a Drow is NOT a farm implement, and
  3. You have a sexy avatar.

BTW, read your stories (only found two here), and wondered where there are more?

If you don't subtract 0.005, you're asking for the minimum number of fives that will get your unrounded average to be at least as big as your reported score. In the posted example, that's 33% of the number of votes. But sometimes a smaller number of fives will get you an average that is smaller than your reported score, but rounds up to what's reported. In the example, you need only 32.5% of the number of votes to have an average that rounds up to 4.33.

I'll back myself up here. :D

Somehow, "plot bunny" doesn't seem appropriate for an idea leading to a "How To" note. But, in essence, I was remarking that I saw whatever term would work for "plot bunny" here for a "How To".

Much obliged, LordMhoram. :D Thank you, and you're welcome for the encouragement.

"You know a Drow is not a farm implement....."

PAAH-HAHAHA! :D

I love that. I had a conversation with another about how Drizzt Du'Ourden is not only a Gary Stu (male Mary Sue) character, fairly asexual, and doesn't develop at all over the course of 5+ books, but also that THIS is how Drow really should be. "These are my kind of Drow!" he said. :D

Although the person said that after reading the next 2 chapters, which haven't quite posted yet.

BTW, read your stories (only found two here), and wondered where there are more?
On other sites, actually... :p

But here, there will be 2 more chapters added to the current story here very, very soon (submitted them Saturday). It should be either today or tomorrow for those. It's a 4-part story total with an actual ending (with room left for further stories with the same character if people seem to like her--there are lots of plot hooks embedded in this first story). That'll finish this particular story, though.

I have more stories in the works, but they need some editing before they're ready for submission. :) Thank you for your interest!

Okay, then. Do you still subtract .005 if the average is 4.63 instead?

*bing bing bing* :D Okay, I found the page you were on! Haha, thanks! (Hate thinking myself into circles....)

Yes. Whatever your reported score is, you subtract 0.005. You can do it before you drop the four or after. (Or, instead of doing both, you can subtract 4.005 from the reported score.) But do it before you multiply by the number of votes.

Got it. :D Thanks for your patience. (Really wanted to know.)

W means the story has placed in a themed contest, or won one of the monthly contests.

E is "Editor's Choice" and is a submission that has caught Laurel's eye for one reason or another.

Know what a Drow is, all too well. I had a player make my life a living hell with one for many, many years. Razza Kilsek was such a terror that I have yet to introduce Drow into my stories here *laugh* They're still there, in the caverns of the Great Crater, but I doubt they'll be coming out, because I still twitch every time I think about all the aces I had to play to keep him from tearing apart the entire world order :p

Getting a little revenge on my other bane, though. I have nasty plans for Meckataur the Destroyer in "Sisters of the Mists"

muah-ha! I want to know more about this...but I'll take it elsewhere and stop getting this thread way far off track. ;)

Please check your pms.
