Where I live now is an atrocious place to be a single man past his mid-20's. Clubs are skewed towards the late teen (drinking age) to mid-20's demographic.

Not being negative, I assure you - just realistic and pragmatic.

Life has continued to place opportunities in front of me and then, yank them away like a bad game of musical chairs.

Brett - grab the bull by the horns so to speak and get out and make a change, honey. Life is too short to put up with crappy situations in your life. No women our age go to clubs much anyway - go to the supermarket and hang around the fresh fruit and vegetables section, or the local gym, or car wash......etc....

I appreciate the advice MARRIED. Most of the places one can meet women are not available to me for a variety of reasons. Even when I was more "out and about", I was just one of those men who fared badly. I am almost always the "buddy". I thought perhaps that was changing recently, but no.

Sometimes you have to accept the reality and that's what I've decided to do. I've been kicked and beaten down enough times that I just can't allow myself to believe I'm going to find someone. Not at my age. It isn't in the cards.

I like the "get out and make a change" part. Have to disagree with venues like the produce section or the car wash, though: those are what dating teachers would refer to as "cold" environments - places where people do NOT go with the intention of being social.

Better to find a group organized around an interest that you genuinely enjoy; then you'll have a self-selected group of people who are there with the intention of interacting with others who like the same thing.

I hope not to have to use a cane (I walk a fair bit) but due to events in August, I do feel old. Not only that, the past few weeks have come with constant reminders of my mortality.

You'd have to shoot me to get me to agree to join to a hiking club. I only walk because I force myself to do so to get out of my chair.
