First post here, hi! I too am glad to leave the ice to you, I *hate* ice, but I had an idea for a handle for you!
At the local Joanne's fabric store, they have wooden candleholders in the craft area. They are completely plain so you can finish them as you like. They have short ones, and long ones. I bet you could find them at other big craft stores in your area too, I know I've seen them at a few around here besides the fabric store.
I bought and used one to make a handle for a soft fake fur/leather flogger and it fits in the hand really well.
If it interests you, you might think of putting a couple inches of thickish wooden dowel into it so the dowel can sink down into the ice-do, and the candlestick part can just rest on top of it.
Here's a photo of the flogger I made, so you can see the general shape of the handle (I painted mine). And as I said, they have a longer one too, if that interests you.

Forgive me if it's already been suggested, I'm being lazy today and don't feel like reading the whole post.
You know those baloons that preformers/magicians use? The really long ones, they get bent into shapes and animals and such. You can get them at any party supplies store.
Anyway, just fill one up like a water baloon, tie it off, and toss it in the freezer. You shouldn't even have to bother with the water bottle method you came up with. After it's frozen the latex will be brittle and you should be able to easily break/peel it off.

yah and it would be flat and deformed on one side - do you know how much time it took to use that water bottle? Seconds... mere seconds

I've just been busy of late.
I've calmed down some... but in retrospect, I feel like though this was a delightful idea, the thread wasn't...
And yah, it sucks. I feel like a hippocrit at the same time.
And I lost my keys tonight and spent half an hour crawling around one the floor at barnes and noble before one of the dip shit cashiers finally did really check with the other employees and handed my keys over. I was frantic with worry, I'm sleep deprived, already stressed over this recent discovery that I've been "outed" and add to it the normal holiday crap... not fun.
