For documents that might move to another piece of software eventually, basic HTML is much cleaner.

Well... it's sort of a general thing, not specific to this site. Software changes over time. If you are going to work with a source document, you want nice clean and easy code to transition so you wreck less stuff. This is why forums use simplified HTML or UBB, among other reasons.
