well that solves the problem of finding the correct colors.

RIT does work well, but make sure that you stir the rope quite a bit when letting it soak in or else it it won't get into the non-exposed parts of the rope. So while it looks nice, as soon as the rope shifts you will see slivers of white (or whatever the default colour is).
 
I looked up the coin knot.
It's pretty but real what's it good for.
OK you can put two ropes together with it but it's not a knot fot actually doing anything like tieing someone down or up.
Maybe I'm just not into the look as much as the means to the end.

I'm with you there, but knottyboys.com have a lot of vids that show it in holddown harnesses and such. It distributes the rope across the body...

Then once you have them in a harness, you can tie the harness to anything you like and the person inside the harness goes along for the ride
 
I think rope diameter is also one of the more important characteristics when considering knots.
