Is it important that you like the stories you edit?

I don't like all the stories I edit, but I do draw the line at stories that contain rape or other situations that would put it in the non-consent category. There's a difference between not liking the story and being uncomfortable reading it. I agree with PennLady - it's sometimes easier if you can avoid getting wrapped up in it.

It can be easier, but it depends on the person and the story.

Now, I prefer not to edit things like incest or non-con because I simply don't like it. OTOH, I prefer not to edit BDSM or Fetish because I'm not informed enough on the subject matter. I could do a copy edit on such a story, but I wouldn't offer many opinions on the content.

Hello editors,

I'm curious: Is it important or necessary, that you like the stories you edit?

Looking forward for anwers...

I am of the opinion that it is at least important to like the work or the genre of the story I am working on. If a story is not something I like, then I might be more objective but I would also just want to get it done to get it done. And that wouldn't be fair to the writer. IMHO.

I edited around 50 pages today, for me a first--and I don't expect many repeats of this. I've learned that about 5 hours of editing in one day is the most I can usually do. But I like the author's writing, and although I had to refuse to edit a story of his before because I ended up being really uncomfortable, this story has proved that if I'm comfortable with a story and like it, I can get in the zone and edit the hell out of a story. It also helps being acquainted with an author's style and having edited for him/her before. Just saying.
