just "stuff" - a thread for random, rogue thoughts :D

the food. i suppose i could google the origins but i am too lazy :)

good holiday, EO?

It's definitely American, but no definite origin. In the late 1800's cheap sausage was rumored to be made with dog meat and cheap sausage links were called "dogs". Some smart street vendor had the bright idea to sell them in buns.

Yes, thanks. And how is your holiday?

No hot dogs so far - like 'em best when done over a fire/coals, a bit black outside. Toast the bun a bit, then just a bit of regular yellow mustard.

Oh yum--that has got my tastebuds working:)

colmans is a must with dawgs, but don't forget the masses of onion and ketchup :D

Ketchup on a hot dog is anathema to me. I prefer mine with mustard, chopped onion and sauerkraut. But eagleyez loves the dawg just as you describe it. :)

I agree on ketchup - doesn't belong on a hot dog. Other stuff - onions, chili, cheese, sauerkraut can be nice on a dog, but mustard is enough.
Actually, I hardly ever use ketchup - best used in making Sloppy Joes.

Don't really do hot dogs. I prefer a doner kebab with hummus, garlic and yoghurt sauce and a metric buttload of tabouli and onions. Cheese is a must too and for meat, I prefer chicken. It's my son's fave too.

That's nice, too. Think Greek Gyros are a close cousin,
Got quite fond of them where Broadway split off from Clark in Chicago,

This is a Toast to ALL of US!! To those who Love Us, the bastards that Hate Us and the LUCKY M'fers that got to Know Us!

I am told they are the same but different to the English version which I am led to believe contains no salad, which would just spoil it for me. I love all the crunchy vegies with it to offset the meatiness, but I admit I am a bit of a nut for a salad sandwhich. I thought I'd gone to heaven when Subway opened up here and I discovered that they pretty much let you have every vegie on your sandwhich...What I really miss is this sandwhich a local institution (long closed) called The Good Food Shop used to make. It had every green vegetable known to man on it plus red cabbage and alfalfa and it was spread with your choice of either hummus (theirs was the best ever, I've spent years trying to come up with something half as good) or sun dried tomato and feta spread, all on this fabulous locally made stoneground whole wheat bread. I'd give a kidney for one right now....

Subway is nice, but I like Quizno's better. Recently Which Wich has expanded from Austin to Houston, including one near our house.

There are plenty of Quiznos in my neighborhood. They sell a short sub called the Bullet. With a drink, it's an even $5. It maybe the last five dollar lunch on the planet.

Quizno's hasn't hit Aussie yet. I am praying for a Taco Bell. I love Mexican...We have Burger King here but it's called Hungry Jack's here. There was already a tiny little shop in Adelaide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungry_Jack's

Nobody I have ever heard calls in HJ or Hungry's. Where I am it's called Jacka's.

We have KFC (personal but toxic fave) and Dominos, Pizza Hut. Our local competition for KFC is Red Rooster which I think, frankly sux. What was funny, when they opened down the road from me, someone immediately took out the s in the sign and it became Red Roo ter for a couple of years. It actually began a tourist attraction (a rooter in Aussie is someone having or who enjoys sex, a root) and a source of enormous amusement locally.

For Mexican fast food Taco Cabana is much better.
Even better are the neighborhood taco trucks.

Sounds yum. The local Mexican leaves a lot to be desired. It is way overpriced and not very good. The vending vans have got to be better!

That's one nice thing about Houston - a lot of ethnic diversity so many choices for 'native' food. Besides the Hispanic (mostly Mexican, but also others), there's Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Indo-Pack, Lebanese, and of course steaks and BBQ.

Yumm! I'd could happily eat my way round your town!

We have a huge influx of African refugees of different flavours (mostly Sudnanese and Nigerians what also some more obscure kinds). I keep hoping one of the more enterprising groups will open a restaraunt. Often when you get a lot of refugees you get a lot of problems, but these guys have been fab. They have improved the local ethnic diversity, are hard working and raise polite, well mannered kids. And because the Sudanese kids are on average a foot taller with long legs than the white kids around here, our athletic teams have benefited.
