I think there are many levels to this question.

Some people have to take everything ever said that mentions race (unless it's mentioning how disenfranchised they are) and turn it into a racist statement. Especially we in the U.S.

Oh, good lord, we white, anglo protestants are SO concerned that anyone will ever see us as a racist and that we might offend that we go tiptoeing around people of different colors and races trying so hard to say the right thing and never say anything offensive. Get a clue people, all that worrying about racism, is racism. If you truly didn't care about color, you wouldn't even worry about it. Racism is what's in your heart, not whether you mention a given race in a question. Sure questions and statements that mention race can be racist, but just because a question or statement does mention race doesn't make it inherently racist.

I am white as they come and had a really great black friend in working together in an all-white warehouse when I was 18. We were Christmas hires but knew we'd all be laid off after the holidays. But they decided to keep a few of us, so we were all vying to get hired permanently. Then when my black buddy and I didn't make the cut, I told him he didn't have to worry about being laid off.
