Limerick Digest Challenge: Rewrite a Poem in Limerick form

Sad Eyed Lady

with mercury, silver and smoke
a brownfield site is bespoke.
though i’d love to caress
what lies under your dress
my arabian drums i must stroke

Hip-Hop Envy

More hips swinging down the line
and honey these curves are fine!
This ghazal brings the jazz
all while shaking its azz.
Oh I only wish it were mine.

ENGL 202: Modernist Poetry,
Exam Question 5

How we live, how we love. Bishop writes
In her villanelle pure anthracite.
Words with barely a flame
Moaned again and again.
Is disaster controlled its insight?

Not So Sweet Tastee Freeze

"Let be be finale of seem"
is a headache or even bad dreams.
Sometimes a cigar
is something worse by far,
and the freezer ain't just for ice cream.

Shoveling Snow with Buddha

On a day where you might need a sleigh,
He talked and talked while I shoveled away.
Then it's cocoa and cards
after working so hard,
but Billy Collins has a really long driveway.

Can you hear the silence?

Whatever they dreamt und heimlich erflehten
caught on paper and steckt in Trompeten
it's silent, and then
könnt ihr sie hören?
Do you belong zu den stillen Poeten?

Alas Poor Emo Prince

A Dane from someplace rotten
whinges that he's misbegotten.
Funeral meats get served cold,
Pop's a ghost and Ham's trolled,
then all die and thus are forgetten.

Holy Bible

There was an avatar named Jesus:
Hungry throngs begged Him" Plz feed us!!?"
He fed them Loaves and Fish:
Quite a delicious dish!
In recompense He was crucified by Pilate Pontius.......

Bhagavad Gita

Arjuna2Krishna-" Cuz, I will not Fight!"
" Do not on the Law of Dharma be a blight,
Pick up thy bow.......
seeds of Karmaic Destruction, Duryodhan did sow.....
and Dharma will always Triumph2Heaven's delight!!!"

The Hill We Climb

It's towards the future that we all navigate
so it doesn't seem partisan to state
that the best version of
a country we love
leaves again off of Make America Great.

I really liked this.

I've enjoyed them all so far, and have appreciated being pointed in the direction of poems I wasn't familiar with before. This is such a fun thread :)

Constantly Risking Absurdity (#15)

Poetry as high wire act abstracted,
so beauty from truth is extracted,
and more often than not
it's beauty he caught
when City Lights through him were refracted.

Rest in peace Mr. Ferlinghetti. I dont think there's any way to calculate what the world owes you for your century of quiet, steady, patient, anarchy.

Die Toten Hosen: Popmusik

After all those years, have you outgrown pop music?
Some old punks, unplugged, wonder, laying it on thick!
What now, classic or jazz?
Oh my goodness, such stress!
Has the moment come to retire from pop music?

ENGL 202: Modernist Poetry, Exam

Tzara, I think I speak for a lot of us when I say I would gladly take your class.

ENGL 202: Modernist Poetry,
Exam Question 1

In your essay, please strive to explain
How Bill's wheelbarrow, left in the rain,
Portends something profound;
And please also expound
On those chickens--how do they pertain?

That wheelbarrow of red's a no-brainer
it's meant as a rusty container
for the farmboys' bank heist
so, for the love of christ
they could pay the lawyer's retainer

They couldn't with the bank make amends
but it's the chickens, not the barrow, portends
with more cowardice than bravado
they turned shades of avacodo
and made a blood-muddy mess in the end.

ENGL 202: Modernist Poetry,
Exam Question 2

Of this gyre that is spinning around,
And the falcon that cannot be found--
Are they anarchy loosed
Or just symbols produced
Of the rough beast of Chaos unbound?

It's a long dizzy walk for the lost, er-
is it the bird, or birder that's tossed her?
As an expressionless sphinx
rubs his thighs with his dink,
in the city of David with bad posture.

ENGL 202: Modernist Poetry,
Exam Question 3

If a metaphor's kind of a dream,
This one's chilly--it being ice cream.
Is this verse about death
Or about those who're left?
Well, in any case, what is its theme?

This poem I find weird in general -
concupiscent curds? Impenetrable!
and before you retort,
know I'm three glass knobs short,
but I think the answer's: life is ephemeral.

ENGL 202: Modernist Poetry,
Exam Question 4

What does poetry mean in the end,
Do we read it as it was first penned?
Or can themes be revised
Through interpreter's eyes
?
On whose take do we finally depend?

Since the original context keeps drifting
as the audience's attention strays, shifting.
To choose I am loathe
so the answer is both,
as critics, for cultural relevance, keep sifting.

Exam Question 5

It's an art that doesn't require practice.
Our things, they only distract us.
People leave too soon
Because life's a balloon
And time is a goddamn cactus.

or maybe:

All the lost totems and tokens
A sense of fragility awoken
What's being said here
Is there's no point in fear
The cup is already broken

ENGL 202: Modernist Poetry
Final Exam Grade for Levitating_Bed

LB's essay exam has been written
In the limerick form. He seems smitten
By its anapest beat.
His rhymed lines are a treat.
They're all "Lyricalli" sweet as a kitten.

And this kitten deserves a fine grade
For the limerick suite that he's made.
So I mark him an A-plus
Without nary a fuss.
(For his A's best my Q's, I'm afraid.)

Your teachings are far from ephemeral.
Indeed your lessons are seminal,
but I have to confess
though I've learned more than less,
I most enjoyed you as Witchmaster General.
