Love On Baker Street

There's a tennis tournament on the old RCA above Wally's bar.
Beats looking at Gladys, down at the end, napping between drinks.
The boredom, palpable
farther reaching, with
its bone grey grip.
a guy in the third row
drunk for drama, yells
"rush the net, stupid!"
while the TV man chimes
"he's leaving the corners
wide open"
the Sun, a golden blaze
merely adds to the lull of
valium fueled volleys, lazy lobs
and feather brushed serves.
but watching, amid the stench
of stale beer on sticky bar
I understand.
It's only the first set~
strengths must be explored
weaknesses exposed
and strategies resolved.
the winners and slams
will come in time
and i can't help but wish
Gladys had learned tennis

Gunsmoke is on TV, two third shift factory guys are playing pool badly, and Wally is washing glasses.
My mind goes a driftin
It's a long way, a hard go
from St Louis to Sacramento
and one man's bravery
becomes another's idiocy.
a farm abandoned,
family and friend alike
shed as boots showing
the wear of bad steps
and ahead, savages
storms and sickness
riding the whirlwind
of latent regret.
But dreams
spur a deceptive hope
no two alike
and the wheels turn ever
grinding old into new
with no thought of the oxen unfairly yoked, whipped in despair, blamed for calamity,
left standing in the rain.
His starved bones will bleach
alone, in the sands of
death valley, forgotten
as a campfire fart.
Many have hitched their dreams
to my pull, only to walk on
when my knees gave out.
and today, I bleach.

I need to bust out
of dis ere gloomy doom
dontcha know?
yah, you betcha!
go all five o'clock charlie
on hot lips and frank
find me a big momma
polka dot panties, and
a nursing bra
cuz i'm kinda lazy
sky dive sans the chute
aiming for the haystack
shrugging the pig pen
beyond
maybe find a church basement
yelling BINGO! after two numbers
are called
climb a mountain
just to find a four year old
eating her happy meal
sail an ocean in an inner tube
and a cooler of Buds
hoping the sunfish
are biting
learn a new olie and sven joke
and tell it to mildred merkhovitz
go dancing
pretending i invented
the polka
yah, you betcha
I'll start with the momma
in the parachute panties
and drippy boobs

LOL. This evokes a Harold and Maude, absurd fun feel for me. Me likey!

Been there. A good black comedy always helps pass the time when you're trapped in bad weather. May I suggest... Harold and Maude

Kevin Welch sounds vaguely familiar. A Texas singer? Around the local rodeos and county fairs? I’m not Houston born, but Houston raised.

Well, nevertheless, be careful out there driver.

Actually, he's from oklahoma, so yeah, he's got the twangy thing goin. But he was too edgy for radio, tho he had a cpl minor hits.
He's probably a rodeo clown now.
Too bad he didn't know you tube would come along.
I've been around awhile~i was drinkin in gilleys and johnny lee's back when people knew who they were (but i never rode the bull)

*chuckles*

It's certainly been a minute, hasn't it?

Well, the storms have almost rolled on through in my neck of the woods.

Here's hoping you'll at least get a break in the clouds, so you can enjoy a pretty windshield sunset before night falls on Baker Street.

Take care of yourself out there. :)

She

flowed
black oil
refined movement
and it was all over for him
eye-socket punctuated
brain spiked
merciful curves
ruthlessly efficient

(merciless?)

DISCLAIMER-Do not read this rambling of an old fool

I needed to get away from Baker
and the highway seemed a blue
ocean of mystery.
That's how I got to Texarkana.
The 108 Lounge, is no lounge at all, just a beer joint, in what was
a trailer, on the edge of a field
on highway 108, going nowhere.
Two drunk old drifters were
vying for the attention of the
not quite as drunk Evonne, and
it seemed to suit her.
Where is the poem,you ask?
Wait~it's coming
The ancient juke box cornered
appropriately, played only stale
roadhouse country, for it's all
it ever knew.
The pretty bartender, with the
tired hair and desperate eyes, was two days into this third job,
one for each baby, and her name was Elizabeth.
"it's a long way from Colorado
to Texarkana" I said. "how did it happen?" And she told me.
Told me how her father had abandoned the family when she was two, how she blamed her mother, how she came to Texarkana to find him. And the missing pieces to the picture puzzle her heart ached to re-create.
"was it what you expected?" I asked. "what you hoped for?"
Of course it wasn't~it rarely is.
"so why did you stay"
"well," she wringed her fingers like a dirty dishrag, "I met this guy, we had three beautiful babies. Boom Boom Boom
then he skipped state, and now I'm stuck."
As she opened me another Bud, she added, "I just found out he now has a girl pregnant in Louisiana."
"if you wait til you're unstuck," I said, offering the obvious. "you never will be" And I regretted saying it before the words crossed the bar.
Her puzzle will have to be tossed so she can build a new one.
This she knows now
And she loves her mother
in a way she needs to
and fucks the blame
knowing it's a hell of a lot farther than miles, from Aurora to Texarkana.
The poem? Here it is. One word.
Elizabeth

This Bridge, too Far

Remember those walls of
of wood paneling, comforting me
with their grain?
That plush carpet, a tickle my toes
to the first sprig of morning?
But hardwoodwood and pastels
seemed a poor choice
for Gettysburg
Rip and tear, push and pull
nothing more
than the daily cudgel
and on and on and on
I trudged
corner to corner
silent screams
in the refuge
of smaller and smaller
while your vast army
imperialized.
"One more hill!" the cry went up
but my rifle lay limp
to the necessary shot
you knew
I'd never take.
Now here it is
another bridge, a hundred beyond
the hundred swore
to never cross
and there you are
alone
waiting for my red clay steps
bringing up the rear
that familiar sound
you'll never hear
for if you look back,
you'll see the bridge burned
and not a trace
of me
save the smoke
that lingers
the last of we

The Day The Dam Broke

used to be a quiet peaceful town
over there was the flower shop
there, the bakery
and over there, the jail
he said
What's that? I said,
pointing to a circle of boats
oh, that was the church
the fish bite best there
he said
and i admired
their ability to move on

Tell Me, Where Will The Children Play

She couldn't decide
which ones she liked best
so she planted them all~
roses and marigolds
lazy susans shading daisies
daffodils on holly hills
til there was nowhere left
soft grass to lie down on.
some required great care
others grew as they do
willy nilly
hodge podge the garage
measured once
then cut thrice
God! Such an awful bleeeding
the neighbors, they squawked
the hummingbirds gawked
the butterflies
all flew away
no matter said he
from where once
grew a tree
just the latest religion
to kill you and me.

Basking In The Glow

The flyers were tacked
to slivered poles
while balloons of
banner sail
echoed proclamation
Big Show Tonight!
The Milky Way, so aptly named
for its river of pearls in
chocolate swirl
promised enchantment
to the tiny star
so fringe.
And so it was
from deep in the bleachers
she saw it all~
cicadas singing
to barbeque chicken
sizzling
moons on wayfaring waves
and picnics
in the park
Jupiter and Venus were wrong
to think her jealous
she was always
what she is
a slow roller to third
~when she didn't strike out
the limp of a leg
too short
content
in other's shine

madness

There she goes
and it can't be mine,
mine don't go like that
smooth and straight
right down the pipe
She seen it too
her eyes over glasses
pretending she didn't
but I know she did
Mine?
no way jose
never seen it before
ha! so say you
Got a nice tail wind though,
that one
might be doing eight
ooh! that was close
gotta love those reflexes
Yikes!
here comes another
nothing like a race
to spice up
saturday afternoon
That could be mine
but i'm swearing it aint
it only moves like mine
all drunk and jiggly
right into taco bell
Don't look at me, pal
I just have this milk
and caulking gun
a spectator
just like you
~asshole
Heading into traffic now
that first rogue
all scatter and shimmy
brake and collide
in and out
down and around
devil may care
The state farm guy
will woe is me
when phones start ringing
with victims moans
on this windy afternoon
Well, here's my ride
and I almost hate to go
Only k-mart
would build their lot
on a hillside
daring maniacal shopping carts
to run for their lives

LOL, that was a fun ride.
I once did shopping cart races down a steep road that ended in an intersection. Wheee!
