Yes, it can be daunting to step into a large community such as Lit, though for the most part, the folks that hang out in the HT and HT Cafe are really good folks. The same cannot be said for other areas of the site, which is one of the reasons I don't venture beyond these walls. Life is too short to be too serious, and shorter still to have to put up with folks bent on being arsewads.

Hopefully some of the lurkers will come out and play, whether we keep this thread on topic or not. IMHO, it's fun threads such as this one that helps to bring new folks out into the light. Come on, all you lurkers, don't be askeered, we don't bite ... Well, at least not hard ... Well, at least not unless you ask.

A few things I will add that didn't get copied.

In reference to the HT and Cafe, in general we seem to be more interested in what a person has to say rather than their post count (out of my (checks profile) (holy shit, last time I looked it was 5000) almost 10,000 posts, a good 10% of those will be serious posts).

So if someone with a low post count offers an opinion it will be treated with the same respect/disdain as someone with a high post count.
That said I do understand that it can seem intimidating when you look at all the high numbers and I remember how excited I was when I hit a thousand but we really do try to make people feel welcome.

Internal jokes are a problem I agree, but it's hard not talk about things you remember, however if you ask (that's a general you not a specific you although you specifically are included in the general you of course) and it's not a personal matter most of us are more than happy to share the joke, often with links provided.

I know too that sometimes people post a reply and it gets overlooked in the general melee, I've been through this myself on other boards and it can be disheartening.
One way to to be noticed is to quote the person if you are responding to a particular point, most of us feel obliged (rightly so) to respond to a direct question.

I guess the basic principle that seems to flow through the HT/Cafe is that people will generally respond in kind, whether that be politeness or arseholishness.

Looks like we're all suffering from the same problem of not wanting to repeat what has already been said, still sometimes when people are asking advice it's comforting to know that the majority of people are in agreement.


With regard to the forum look, some of you may not be aware that at the bottom of the page there is a selection tab marked (if you haven't seen it before) V Bulletin 3 Default Style once you open this tab you can choose from a (small) variety of skins to change the look and style of your page, once you've worked out which one you prefer you can make it permanent in your user control.

Also there is a super handy dandy custom made FAQ thread stickied at the top of the HT forum which should answer a large number of your questions about avatars and other important things. Of course if we've missed something then please ask.

Sooo... it seems that most lurkers choose to remain lurking whilst the not-so-lurkers answer the questions. These "intro" threads are normally pretty pointless to me, but I'll try and voice the opinions of a true lurker because this one at least bothered to try and encourage something more than "hi! i'm new!" .

What do I think of the place? I don't know, it's big, I think it took me a while to grasp quite how large this community is. The personalities are... varied. The size isn't something that puts me off posting particularly though, I tend to say nothing on any forum unless I feel I have something worthwhile to contribute. So if the topic is interesting and I think something hasn't been said that should have been then maybe I'll interject, otherwise I tend to just keep my mouth shut.

The most entertaining* threads on any of the boards I'll have to be honest have to be those involving lengthy detailed arguments between what I assume to be complete nutjobs and the sane, they're fascinating. Generally I enjoy reading the ramblings of that special kind of crazy that only the internet can nurture - guilty pleasure.

Lastly, I have formed no opinion of you Quoll, and despite your concerns about coming across as a dick, at least you don't one as your avatar! I'm up for a mural involving boobies....
