There is also an option to get to know someone *through* roleplay/collaborative writing. Basically, if the roles are the real you two and the only play part is a somewhat realistic scenario where you two actually meet face-to-face then what you write about your character is really you telling the other person whatever you want them to know about you. And you are free to ask any questions through your character as they are meeting for the first time in the story too, so *they* need to get to know each other as well.

I did it once, we were at it for a few months and it was a lot of fun. Almost all of our communication was through that story, off character talk was really at a min, only to let the other side know if we were going to be busy for the next few days and might not be able to reply, things like that. And when we finally met for lunch (as in a real life lunch) it didn't feel like going on a blind date at all. Though at least for me there was a huge disconnect between how I imagined he would look like and the reality. We didn't exchange any pictures beforehand, no video chats, nothing, just went straight from the story telling to a lunch date. I wouldn't recommend doing that! No matter how accurate you are in your written descriptions of yourself, it is not a picture, so the imagination of the other person is filling out the gaps. And most likely filling them not the right way :))
I think we both were a bit disappointed and the collaborative writing dried up pretty fast after.
 
I'm definitely the type to prefer normal chats and cyber as well. I haven't done cyber before but when it comes to having fun online I much prefer to have an actual connection with the person that im talking to. When role-playing it just doesn't feel any different than porn but when your actually into the person that your playing with it makes it feel way more intimate and special! Moaning each other's names and talking about all the things you want to do to each other and even telling each other what they should do to themselves while chatting sounds so much better than talking about what would happen in a random scene that would never happen irl

It can get extremely arousing just by chatting about each other's sexual experiences and likes.
If both people are comfortable then this can lead to an exciting masturbating together session.

I don't hate RP, but I've had some weird experiences and prefer to cyber. One woman wanted to incorporate things that are hard limits for me (involving family members creeps me out), and when I told her that I wasn't into that she ghosted me.

Not very good at rp myself and not really comfortable camming but i love a good chat with someone who has the same interests and I'm also not against a good time talking dirty with each other and hopefully help each other release some stress or tension
