Not a Single Comment

This is absolutely true. Out of the blue I had four anon comments all with a similar format on four older stories and all in one day. I figured someone stumbled onto my stories and felt compelled to comment. Didn’t vote, though.

odd, since it is so much easier to vote than comment.

I will often comment or even send an email feedback to the author. Those are some of my favorite comments to receive on my stories. In my experience, the more taboo the content, the more likely it is to get comments. While I like the loving wives category, I don't write in that genre. And I've received critical comments from readers saying my story isn't loving wives, when they're clearly marked as bdsm or non-consensual.

More comments in contests

I think there are more comments for stories in Contests, because the authors that take part tend to comment as well as score all the other stories in the contest, or at least those stories that are in categories that appeal to the writers. In the few contests I have participate in I have tended to read all the other entries and my natural inclination is to respond, although sometimes I do have to bite my tongue!

4.40 is a very good score, by my standards. (Maybe my standards are too low!) See what it's like getting a 2.76. That stings.

I'm on three different sites and it's hard to get comments on anything. People just seem to have other priorities. Stories that are in contests usually get the most comments. And I've already mentioned Loving Wives.

So don't sweat it, you're not losing your touch.

I had a look at some of my stats.

I got 20 stories, with number 21 about to be published as soon as I am brave enough for it. Just finished editing last night, and not sure if it still needs something more.

1.68 million views over those 20 stories. 273 comments and 10075 votes. That means I get one comment for every 5944 views. Very low compared to a lot of others in here, but I do have comments on all my stories. I worry a lot when I get low comments, because I feel it is a failure on my end to be able to engage the reader enough to care about the story.

I found it pretty cool that one out of 167 people vote. I must be doing something correct for that to happen. I thought it would be a lot less.

Back to comments, I still get comments on a series I last posted on three years ago. Got one person commenting on it in the last month, and I think it had a handful of comments in 2021. Some stories got a long life.

The new story is part two in a series. I hope I have done enough to engage the readers with it

Do authors want comments that critique their writing? Their style? The story line? Do they want comments on editing problems? Inconsistencies, misspellings, disjointed text? Etc.

I suspect most of us would like more comments like, "OMG! That was the best story I've ever read. It changed my life for the better. Thank you soooooo much for writing it."

(Hey, I don't laugh at your fantasies, it's not nice to laugh at mine. ;) )

sincere constructive criticism will be welcomed. Trolls will be tolerated unless insulting.

Would be nice

Interesting discussion. As a new writer here, I have been tracking how many have read my story. The reading number goes up but very few even bother to click a simple stars rating. So people leaving a comments are rarer than that.

Specially as a new writer, I would like to know if my story is any good or not. Did I convey what I wanted to say for the reader to understand, and how could I improve my writing. What questions I need to answer for the next part of the story.

Yes, comments would be nice as our stories are read.

My rule of thumb, based on just over 100 stories or chapters (about a million words) is one vote per hundred views, one comment per thousand. Some categories better, some worse. If you write a very good story or write very badly, readers will let you know. If you write bang in the middle of the bell curve, you won't get much response at all. That's a 1% and a 0.1% return. Noise, really, which is why intelligent comments can be disproportionately rewarding.

To put the different category responses in perspective, my Loving Wives are 1 in 15-30 views for votes, averaging over 1000 per story. Comments are around 1 in 300 views, averaging around 50+ per story.

Incest responses can be even higher.

Cheer up

Here are my stats with almost 1.5 million views(reads). This is spread over 14 different stories, with one being a 5-part story, and soon to be a final 6th part finale.
I average 1 comment for every 19, 038 views, and one vote for every 539 views. Pretty low I know. It takes on average 35.3 votes before I get a comment. Of course some of my higher read stories do better. I write mostly in the bdsm, non-consent, and mild cuckold categories.
One of my lowest rated stories, 3.95 is easily the highest number of votes at 557, and 6 comments. It's a non-consent, gangbang story with 270,600 views. I've also received some of my best and worst comments on that. There's also a fair amount of emails received on my stories, mostly approving, with very few negative ones.

My highest rated story, with only 89,600 views @ 4.65 rating has 12 comments, and my most read story at 303,700 views also has 12 comments, but only a 4.05 rating. Viewers have either loved or hated that last one, some highly critical of the content. One reader told me it's easily the most disturbing thing she's read on Lit, but also loved it. I wrote it for a woman school teacher, friend who had the fantasy described.
It may just be my imagination, but readers were quicker to comment when I first started on Lit, and the current climate has slowed down votes and comments in my own case, but I went about 15 years between first and last stories.

While comments from readers are fairly rare, actually useful comments--while the do happen--are as rare as hen's teeth.

The best way to get useful feedback on your story is to post a feedback request to this forum, and maybe be prepared to bump it once or twice until you get a response.

Yes, I did that too asking for feedback so I could be a better writer.

Thanks!

What categories do you write in? You say your comments are very low, in both votes and comments it takes me roughly three times as many views to get your numbers.

Post some stories in Loving Wives that involve cheating and you'll get plenty of comments. :)

The title and teaser would not have grabbed my attention away from the large backlog of stories I've yet to read SirHugs.

I don't know if other readers are like me but I haven't done much discovery on literotica the past couple of years. Now I discover stories by visiting the forums, other member's favorites pages and a few subreddits for recommendations from like-minded readers.

Literotica's inability to control the trolls has driven me away. Trolls are voting great stories into the 3s and driving away authors with abusive comments. Also disappointed that so many stories seem to be disappearing from the site when authors leave.

My most popular story, Late Night On The Loveseat With Mom, has 1,082,450 views. 9779 votes. 1825 favorites, making it the 80th most favorited story on Literotica.

It's got a grand total of 62 comments. That's one comment for every 17,459 views. One comment for every 158 votes.

It's just the way it is.

Wow, those view, vote, fav numbers make LW look like a wasteland!

I find some categories get many comments like loving wives. Fetish stories receive few. I personally like to see to the comments even though many are discouraging.

I would like more feedback on my Wedding Vow story just to see if i should bother witht hte effort of additional chapters.

I have started adding an "author's note" to the end of each of my stories, asking for comments and giving specific on aspects of my work that I would like feedback on. For example, for my story Meaningful, Meaningless Sex I wrote the following:

Author's note

Thank you for reading this story, I hope you enjoyed it! Please do vote and leave feedback if you would like to. What did you think of the characters, the plot and the pacing? I'd be particularly interested to hear your opinions if you didn't feel you were able to give me five stars - what could I have done better?

Did you feel that Lucy and Nicolás were a credible couple? Did Jordan work as the villain? What did you think of the escape/rescue scene - did this fit in, or did it feel out of place? Did you feel that Lucy's decision to give up on Nicolás half-way through the story, and to score a 'quick win' with Dave was credible? Please let me know your thoughts.

A confession - I don't speak Spanish! So, I'd be grateful for any suggestions to improve Nicolás' dialogue, especially on the last two pages.

Thank you for your constructive criticism. Please help me improve my work so that I can write better stories for you!

The story has been up for about ten months (posted October 2020) and so far 24 comments have been left (two of which are my replies to comments by others).

That seems to be a good feedback return.

Fickle audience

I posted a story last week. Very good response. Currently stands at 4000 plus views with nine responses. Very good for the stories I post. I posted the second one yesterday. Cratered like the Chicxulub. No response, views at one-tenth of the previous. I don't even know if anyone knows the story exists. I've had crashes before but this is the deepest. If I scratch my head over this any further I'd take the skin off.
