Line breaks and punctuation
How we write poetry is a very personal thing. Grammar is universal. I expect my punctuation and syntax to be understood exactly as I write it. If you see one of . these, then I want you to interpret it as a full stop, that my thought is complete; on the same line, one of , these, means I have created a clause, written a parenthetical phrase or that I'm making a list. If you understand the rules of grammar, my use, either by the rules or without them, will guide you to read my poem exactly as I intend.
How you interpret my language and line breaks will be to your own individual style, however. I use line breaks to, as flyguy says, punch up a word or add a catch in the reading and to invite the reader to pause and taste what has come prior, before moving on to the next sample.
My strophes are separated by a double line break and indicate, generally, a finished verse prior to a refrain, a change in rhyme scheme or rhythm and sometimes, because I like how the poem flows from one thought to another if they're designated as individual ideas through being placed independent of others.
