Paul Krugman: "In Defense of Obama"

In his description of lower income whites Kimmel expresses class contempt. He thinks that the former farmers and trade unionists are too stupid and deluded to know what their interests are, but he does.
Contemptuous? Perhaps. But from what I've seen, it's a very accurate observation.

In every school I ever attended the black population was less than five percent. It is a whole lot different when the black population approaches or exceeds a majority. Whites are not safe in those schools.
That's a rather sweeping statement. Why are they not "safe"? My high school was roughly 40% black (In our lily-white suburban region, we were known as the "Nigger School" by the local Vettemen). I don't know if I ever felt "unsafe", but hai, maybe I was just blissfully unaware of the turrible danger lurking within the heart of the Negro buck.

His point -- and he is right -- is that they have legitimate grievances but they are "sending their mail to the wrong address." Civil rights, integration, affirmative action, black crime (the crime rate is actually very low now), feminism, the welfare state, biggummint in general, all the things they rail against, are not to blame for their troubles; globalization, outsourcing, agribiz, Wal-martization, rising income inequality, and the decline of organized labor are to blame for their troubles, and that's all on the corporations and the 1%.

In 2014 if someone asks a white blue collar what the government and the Democratic Party have done to help him, what will he say, KingOrfeo? This time I would like you to answer in your own words.

He likely would say "Not much," though a more accurate answer would be "Something." (The ACA, the stimulus, etc.)

Where I work and live are majority minority and I've never felt unsafe. Hell, I've been in rooms with, get this, lots of black people and I'm the only non-black person there and I feel safe.

I would imagine vette, james, and busy body would shit their pants.

Many people claim that they are paying more for health care now than before Obamacare. I doubt they are mistaken or lying.

The unemployment rate right now is precisely the same as it was when Obama was inaugurated. It may well be the case that without the stimulus the Great Recession would have devolved into Great Depression II. We do not know that. What we do know is that most Americans are not better off since Obama's inauguration. Millions, probably tens of millions, are worse off.

Blacks have a rate of violent crime that is over seven times the white rate. Until one has been the victim of several black criminals one may know that, but one is unlikely to feel it.

I used not to feel it. I used to pride myself for walking in black neighborhoods after dark just to prove how tolerant I was. :D

I had to stop doing that after I nearly got murdered.

Health care costs....and related premiums...have seen double digit increases each year since at least the year 2000. It's become very fashionable in conserative parlors to blame every single increase on Obamacare

The simple fact is, the vast majority of Americans have seen very little change in their healthcare. Small business owners have seen a rise. Private policy owners over age 50 have seen a rise. People like Julybaby04 who had the illusion of health insurance via now-outlawed draconian mcMinimum policies have seen their cost rise as they are now forced to provide real insurance for their family.

July 2, 2014 - Obama Is First As Worst President Since WWII, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; More Voters Say Romney Would Have Been Better

President Barack Obama is the worst president since World War II, 33 percent of American voters say in a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today. Another 28 percent pick President George W. Bush.

Ronald Reagan is the best president since WWII, 35 percent of voters say, with 18 percent for Bill Clinton.

--------

When Obama was inaugurated in January 2009 the unemployment rate was 7.8 percent. When he was reelected unemployment was again at 7.8 percent. In between it had risen to 10 percent.

Obama's biggest "success" has been to force through a health care plan that most Americans do not like.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...ddenly-obamacare-is-more-unpopular-than-ever/

I am not criticizing Obama from the left. I am certainly not criticizing him from the right. I just don't think he is competent. Before addressing health care he needed to concern himself with unemployment. Right after his inauguration his approval rating was about 65 percent. That was when he needed to raise taxes on the well to do. Then he needed to introduce a work program similar to the Civilian Conservation Corps, which was popular during FDR's first term.

Before working on his health care plan, which was never very popular, he needed to do what most Americans wanted. He needed to substantially reduce unemployment, and he needed to achieve successful conclusions to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In other words, he needed to clean up the mess Bush left.

If he had achieved those goals he would have had the credibility to expand health care to those who lacked it. Instead those goals have still not been achieved six years into his presidency. Obamacare is a big vote getter for the GOP.

Meanwhile, the black ghetto riots in Ferguson, Missouri remind white blue collar workers why their parents and grand parents voted for George Wallace in 1968 and Richard Nixon in 1972. Ebola will probably help the Republicans too. It intensifies popular emotions that range from distaste to loathing for third world immigrants.

Wallace didn't really get all that many votes in 1968 and they were almost all from the deep South. The 1972 vote for Nixon was more of a vote against McGovern rather than anything else.

By 1972 the War in Vietnam was unpopular, but the anti war movement was even more unpopular.

In addition, most white voters noticed that the black ghetto riots ended abruptly with the inauguration of Richard Nixon. They thanked Nixon by voting for him.

I support Obamacare, although I would have preferred a single payer health plan modeled after the system in Canada.

Nevertheless, Obamacare is unpopular.

Franklin Roosevelt faced more severe challenges during the Great Depression than Barack Obama has faced during the Great Recession. Nevertheless, after six years of Roosevelt, most Americans were better off. After six years of Obama most Americans are worse off. If they have jobs there is a good chance that their jobs pay less than the jobs they had in 2008.

One can argue that if Republicans had had majorities in both houses of Congress, and a Republican president during the past six years most Americans would be worse off than we are now. I am inclined to agree.

Unfortunately, after six years of our first affirmative action president most Americans are worse off. No one can deny that this is good for the Republican Party, and bad for the Democratic Party.

still, not able to get a job....you know, the first step in your recovery is to admit that you are failure. only you, can start this journey.

of course you support socialism and socialist programs, because you EARN no money

You think I work in a library because I am articulate and well informed.

I think you are a high school drop out because you write like someone who could not pass the eighth grade.

No, I think that because you are mentally unfit to have a real job. Any jackass ie KingofAssTards can C&P so i wouldn't call you ass monkey's 'articulate and well informed' ... if you need a label it would be 'you have too much time on your hands'

I'd prefer a single-payer model too, and I firmly believe the United States will get there eventually.

And "unpopularity" is relative....the legislation has survived no less than 50 attempts to repeal it.

"Affirmative action president?" Fuck off, you simplistic windbag.

you fucking idiot ... single payer = higher payment

Canada is 30 years behind America in terms of medical treatment. maybe if you Welfare-Baggers would get off your ass and work, pay your fucking fair share, then too you can partake in the benefits of the #1 country. you obama slaves need to stop bringing us down to your pathetic fucked up level

Obama did not publish his grades and test scores. Although he was on the Law Review at Harvard he wrote nothing for it. Although he taught law at the University of Chicago Law school he published nothing for legal publications.

Is the U.S. Health Care System the “Envy of the World”? Not in Canada

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – August 12, 2009 – As members of Congress return to their states and districts to debate the merits of the Democrats’ proposals for health care reform, critics of the proposals may repeat the phrase used by some Republicans, newspaper editorials and bloggers that ‘the American health care system is the envy of the world.”

If so, they should read the results of a recent Harris/Decima poll in Canada that found a 10-to-1 majority of Canadians believed their system was “superior” to the U.S. system. They might also note that a 70% majority of Canadians thought their system was “performing well”; and that a majority favored an expansion of public sector health care (i.e., “government-run” health care in the current debate) over private sector health care.

You spend more time here than I do.

I write most of my own material. In doing so I demonstrate literacy, erudition, and civility that is far beyond your ability level.

Your parents should take away your PC privileges, and pressure you to study for the GED. They won't be around forever to support you. Isn't your fortieth birthday coming up? Or is that your fiftieth birthday?

Learn about proper capitalization and punctuation, like you should have in elementary school. Then talk to me about failure.

Are you capable of nothing but poorly written insults?

See if you can compose a short essay with about 800 words with original insights, facts that you document, and no errors of spelling, grammar, capitalization, or punctuation.
