Poetry and Lyrics

The Court of the Crimson King

Peter Sinfield

The rusted chains of prison moons
Are shattered by the sun
I walk a road, horizons change
The tournament's begun
The purple piper plays his tune
The choir softly sing
Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
For the court of the Crimson King

The keeper of the city keys
Put shutters on the dreams
I wait outside the pilgrim's door
With insufficient schemes
The black queen chants the funeral march
The cracked brass bells will ring
To summon back the fire witch
To the court of the Crimson King

The gardener plants an evergreen
Whilst trampling on a flower
I chase the wind of a prism ship
To taste the sweet and sour
The pattern juggler lifts his hand
The orchestra begin
As slowly turns the grinding wheel
In the court of the Crimson King

On soft grey mornings widows cry
The wise men share a joke
I run to grasp divining signs
To satisfy the hoax
The yellow jester does not play
But gently pulls the strings
And smiles as the puppets dance
In the court of the Crimson King

This is my favorite Jafferson Airplane song. Although I love Grace Slick's power, when Marty Balin, who wrote this, sings this song it sends shivers up my spine... I'm sure it will you too.

Comin' Back to Me

(Marty Balin)
The summer had inhaled
And held its breath too long.
The winter looked the same,
As if it had never gone,
And through an open window,
Where no curtain hung,
I saw you, I saw you,
Coming back to me.

One begins to read between
The pages of a look.
The sound of sleepy music,
And suddenly, you're hooked.
I saw you, I saw you,
Coming back to me.

You came to stay and live my way,
Scatter my love like leaves in the wind.
You always say that you won't go away,
But I know what it always has been,
It always has been.

A transparent dream
Beneath an occasional sigh...
Most of the time,
I just let it go by.
Now I wish it hadn't begun.
I saw you, I saw you,
Coming back to me.

Strolling the hill,
Overlooking the shore,
I realize I've been here before.
The shadow in the mist
Could have been anyone--
I saw you, I saw you,
Coming back to me.

Small things like reasons
Are put in a jar.
Whatever happened to wishes,
Wished on a star?
Was it just something
That I made up for fun?
I saw you, I saw you,
Coming back to me.

I just saw you posted this song. Oh god, it's one of my all time favorites--the first time I ever heard it I sighed and it still makes me sigh and swallow back tears, it's so lovely.

I saw them at the Fillmore East (I was involved in some pretty weird stuff at a very young age lol) on a Saturday night long long ago. I believe they played with Ten Years After (and another band--there were always three bands). But the following day, the Airplane did a free concert in Sheepshead Meadow in Central Park. It was amazing. I still remember them doing Volunteers of America and everyone (stoned out of their heads no doubt) singing along. Alas, Marty Balin was no longer with them....

Now there's a side of "Sweet" Angeline I don't reveal too often. :D

P.S. And that is far and away the best song on that album, though Plastic Fantastic Lover is pretty cool, hehe.

Here's another excellent song Marty Balin wrote for Jefferson Airplane:

Today

Today I feel like pleasing you more than before
Today I know what I want to do but I don't know what for
To be living for you is all I want to do
To be loving you it'll all be there when my dreams come true

Today you'll make me say that I somehow have changed
Today you'll look into my eyes, I'm just not the same
To be anymore than all I am would be a lie
I'm so full of love I could burst apart and start to cry

Today everything you want, I swear it all will come true
Today I realize how much I'm in love with you
With you standing here I could tell the world what it means to love
To go on from here I can't use words, they don't say enough

Please, please listen to me
It's taken so long to come true
And it's all for you
all for you

Ok, now I'm on a 60's music kick

This is possibly my all time favorite love song, written by the wonderful Jesse Colin Young.

Sunlight

Have you seen the sunlight pouring through her hair
And felt her warm mouth on you in the summer’s air
Running in a field of brown, laughing, rolling on the ground now
Smiling as she pulls you down
That’s the way she feels about you
That’s the way she feels about you

If your dreams should wake you shaking in the night
She can touch your face and take away all fright
Like a tree in a meadow wind she will bend to take you in
Makes no difference where you been
That’s the way she feels about you
That’s the way she feels about you

If you wake up screaming, scared about what you’re dreaming
You know she is there, she can share
You’re aware she cares about you

In the morning wake up laughing with the day
She will smile and ask you with her eyes to stay
Like the sunshine warms the sand
She will touch you with her hand now
Touching makes you understand
That’s the way she feels about you
That’s the way she feels about you

If you wake up screaming, scared about what you’re dreaming
You know she is there, she can share
You’re aware she cares about you

In the morning wake up laughing with the day
She will smile and ask you with her eyes to stay
Like the sunshine warms the sand
She will touch you with her hand now
Touching makes you understand
Oh that’s the way she feels about you
That’s the way she feels about you--yeah
That’s the way she feels about you
That’s the way she feels about you

and one more

another of my favorite Jesse Colin Young/Youngbloods songs--one of the best "message songs" I know (makes a great personal credo for me anyway). Believe it--every word is true.

Beautiful

Say what you will
Say what you're feeling
Feeling inside, yeah
Say what you will
Show me what’s hiding
Behind your eyes

Don't keep your feelings
Locked up inside
Tear down your walls
Don't let ‘em hide you
Reach out your hand now
Can’t you understand
You’re beautiful
So beautiful

Do what you will
Pay no attention
To a small mind no
No No No

Do what you will
and laugh at convention
It’s not a crime no
No No No

Open your eyes
And look around you
Love is everywhere
Let it surround you
Reach out your hand
Can’t you understand
You’re beautiful
So Beautiful

Come on and say what you will
Say what you're feeling
Feeling inside, yeah
Come on and say what you will
Show me what’s hiding
Behind your eyes
Don’t keep no feeling
Locked up inside you
Tear down your walls
Don’t let them hide you
Reach out your hand
Can you understand
You’re beautiful

So beautiful
Whew beautiful
Do you feel it?

Photos of Ghosts

Peter Sinfield

Black roses laced with silver
By a broken moon
Ten million stars and the whispered
Harmonies of leaves
We were these

Beside a dried up fountain
Lie five dusty tomes
With faded pasted pictures
Of love's reverie
Across each cover is written,
"Herein are Photos of Ghosts"
Of ghosts, of ghosts,
Of the days we ran and the days we sang

Gentle Giant: Aspirations

As the dust settles, see our dreams
All coming true
It depends on you
If our times, they are troubled times
Show us the way
Tell us what to do

As our faith, maybe aimless blind
Hope our ideals and
Our thoughts are yours
And believing the promises
Please make your claims
Really so sincere

Be our guide, our light and our way of life
And let the world see the way we lead our way
Hopes, dreams, hopes, dreaming that all our sorrows gone

In your hands, holding everyone's
Future and fate
It is all in you
Make us strong build our unity
All men as one
It is all in you

Be our guide, our light and our way of life
And let the world see the way we lead our way
Hopes, dreams, hopes, dreaming that all our sorrows gone
Forever

Me and you babe, how about it?

Romeo and Juliet
a lovestruck romeo sings the streets a serenade
laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
finds a streetlight steps out of the shade
says something like you and me babe how about it?

juliet says hey it's romeo you nearly gave me a heart attack
he's underneath the window she's singing hey la my boyfriend's back
you shoudn't come around here singing up at people like that
anyway what you gonna do about it?

juliet the dice were loaded from the start
and I bet and you exploded in my heart
and I forget I forget the movie song
when you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong juliet?

come up on different streets they both were streets of shame
both dirty both mean yes and the dream was just the same
and I dream your dream for you and now your dream is real
how can you look at me as I was just another one of your deals?

well you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
you can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
you promised me everything you promised me thick and thin
now you just say oh romeo yeah you know I used to have a scene with him

juliet when we made love you used to cry
you said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
there's a place for us you know the movie song
when you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?

I can't do the talk like the talk on the tv
and I can't do a love song like the way its meant to be
I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you
can't do anything except be in love with you

and all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
all I do is keep the beat the bad company
all I do is kiss you through the bars of Orion
juliet I'd do the stars with you any time

juliet when we made love you used to cry
you said I love you like the stars above Ill love you till I die
there's a place for us you know the movie song
when you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?

a lovestruck romeo sings the streets a serenade
laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
says something like you and me babe how about it?

Genesis: Lover's Leap

Walking across the sitting-room, I turn the television off
Sitting beside you, I look into your eyes
As the sound of motor cars fades in the night time
I swear I saw your face change, it didn't seem quite right

And it's hello babe, with your guardian eyes so blue
Hey, my baby, don't you know our love is true

Coming closer with our eyes, a distance falls around our bodies
Out in the garden, the moon seems very bright
Six saintly shrouded men move across the lawn slowly
The seventh walks in front with a cross held high in hand

And it's hey babe, your supper's waiting for you
Hey my baby, don't you know our love is true

I've been so far from here
Far from your loving arms
It's good to feel you again
It's been a long long time
Hasn't it?

It's Raining Here

Stormy Weather
Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald

Don't know why, there's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather, since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time

Life is bare, gloom and misery everywhere
Stormy weather, just can't get my poor old self together
I'm weary all the time, the time, so weary all of the time

When he went away, the blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray, the lord above will let me walk in the sun once more

Can't go on, everything I had is gone
Stormy weather, since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
Keeps raining all of the time

I walk around heavy-hearted and sad
Night comes around and I'm still feeling bad
Rain pourin' down, blinding every hope I had
This pitter and patter and beating, spattering driving me mad
Love, love, love, love, the misery will be the end of me

When he went away, the blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray, the lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more

Can't go on, everything I had is gone
Stormy weather, since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time, the time
Keeps raining all the time

Genesis: Blood on the Rooftops

Dark and grey, an English film, a Wednesday Play
We always watch the Queen on Christmas Day
Won't you stay?

Though your eyes see shipwrecked sailors, you're still dry
The outlook's fine though Wales might have some rain
Saved again

Let's skip the news, boy — I'll make some tea
The Arabs and the Jews, boy — too much for me
They get me confused, boy — puts me off to sleep
And the thing I hate — Oh Lord!
Is staying up late, to watch some debate, on some nation's fate

Hypnotised by Batman, Tarzan, still surprised
You've won the West in time to be our guest
Name your prize

Drop of wine, a glass of beer, dear what's the time?
The grime on the Tyne is mine all mine all mine
Five past nine

Blood on the rooftops, Venice in the spring
The Streets of San Francisco, word from Peking
The trouble was started by a young Errol Flynn
Better in my day — Oh Lord!
For when we got bored, we'd have a world war, happy but poor

So let's skip the news, boy — I'll go and make that tea
Blood on the rooftops — too much for me
When old Mother Goose stops — they're out for twenty-three
Then the rain at Lord's stopped play
Seems Helen of Troy has found a new face, again

Another Great Love Song

ok, lol, my other all time favorite---

Something In the Way She Moves
James Taylor

There's something in the way she moves,
Or looks my way, or calls my name,
That seems to leave this troubled world behind.
If I'm feeling down and blue,
Or troubled by some foolish game,
She always seems to make me change my mind.

And I feel fine anytime she's around me now,
She's around me now
Almost all the time.
And If I'm well you can tell that she's been with me now,
She's been with me now
Quite a long, long time
And I feel fine.

Every now and then the things I lean on lose their meaning,
And I find myself careening
Into places where I should not let me go.
She has the power to go where no one else can find me,
Yes, and to silently remind me
Of the happiness and good times that I know.

It isn't what she's got to say
Or how she thinks or where she's been.
To me the words are nice, the way they sound.
I like to hear them best that way
It doesn't much matter what they mean,
She says them mostly just to calm me down.

And I feel fine anytime she's around me now,
She's around me now
Almost all the time.
And if I'm well you can tell that she's been with me now,
She's been with me now
Quite a long, long time
And I feel fine.

I don't know why, but this King Crimson song just popped in my head. It's very funny and ascerbic, from the mind of that mad genius Robert Fripp (and I think Peter Sinfield).
The lyrics were by Peter Sinfield.

Peace, A Beginning
Robert Fripp/Peter Sinfield

I am the ocean
Lit by the flame
I am the mountain
Peace is my name
I am the river
Touched by the wind
I am the story
I never end.

One of my favorites from King Crimson.

I Talk to the Wind

Said the straight man to the late man
Where have you been
I've been here and I've been there
And I've been in between.

I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear.

I'm on the outside looking inside
What do I see
Much confusion, disillusion
All around me.

You don't possess me
Don't impress me
Just upset my mind
Can't instruct me or conduct me
Just use up my time

I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear.

Absolutely.

What a wordsmith.

Too bad he and Fripp parted ways after "Poseidon."

PFM: The World Became The World

Peter Sinfield

Outside my window
In the courtyard of the world
A gentle rain was falling
No breath of wind
No cry of beast or bird
Too quiet, too still, I turned

To see the raindrops
Like a thousand poet's words
Splash their circles on the stones
And seemed to wash
Over everything with love
And for a moment the courtyard heard

Until the sun
Came bursting through the clouds
Hung up his rainbows in the sky
And with a laugh of flames
Said, "Now go chase the gold"
And the world became the world

Now we're all travellers
Some seekers and some sought
Who leave the courtyard to be caught
In nets of self
Damned certainty and choice
But do you believe our voice?

You — you've got what must belong to me
I need — I'll bleed for more possessions
You — you've got no right to disagree
Bow, kneel, or fear my aggressions

Thank God if sometimes
Your oyster holds a pearl
When the world remains the world

Too bad indeed. I always thought this one was especially beautiful. Some of the language puts me in mind of Yeats.

Islands
(Fripp/Sinfield)

Earth, stream and tree encircled by sea
Waves sweep the sand from my island.
My sunsets fade.
Field and glade wait only for rain
Grain after grain love erodes my
High weathered walls which fend off the tide
Cradle the wind
to my island.

Gaunt granite climbs where gulls wheel and glide
Mournfully glide o'er my island.
My dawn bride's veil, damp and pale,
Dissolves in the sun.
Love's web is spun - cats prowl, mice run
Wreathe snatch-hand briars where owls know my eyes
Violet skies
Touch my island,
Touch me.

Beneath the wind turned wave
Infinite peace
Islands join hands
'Neathe heaven's sea.

Dark harbour quays like fingers of stone
Hungrily reach from my island.
Clutch sailor's words - pearls and gourds
Are strewn on my shore.
Equal in love, bound in circles.
Earth, stream and tree return to the sea
Waves sweep sand from my island,
from me.

Beautiful, and very Sinfield.

I've actually never heard Islands.

Lizard I have...

How does anyone think of a phrase like "saffron sabbath eyelids bleed"?

Lizard:

Farewell the temple master's bells
His kiosk and his black worm seed
Courtship solely of his word
With Eden guaranteed

For now Prince Rupert's tears of glass
Make saffron sabbath eyelids bleed
Scar the sacred tablet wax
On which the Lizards feed

Wake your reasons' hollow vote
Wear your blizzard season coat
Burn a bridge and burn a boat
Stake a Lizard by the throat

Go Polonius or kneel
The reapers name their harvest dawn
All your tarnished devil's spoons
Will rust beneath our corn

Now bears Prince Rupert's garden roam
Across his rain tree shaded lawn
Lizard bones become the clay —
And there a Swan is born

Gone soon Piepowder's moss-weed court
Round which upholstered Lizards sold
Visions to their leaden flock
Of rainbows' ends and gold

Now tales Prince Rupert's peacock brings
Of walls and trumpets thousand-fold
Prophets chained for burning masks
And reels of dream unrolled

Night enfolds her cloak of holes
Around the river meadow
Old moon-light stalks by broken ploughs
Hides spokeless wheels in shadow
Sentries lean on thorn-wood spears
Blow on their hands, stare eastwards

Burnt with dream and taut with fear
Dawn's misty shawl upon them
Three hills apart great armies stir
Spit oath and curse as day breaks
Forming lines of horse and steel
By even yards march forward

.....

I know what you mean. This one is amazing, I always thought, full of poetic devices--allusion, alliteration, metaphor, etc.,--and perfectly captures the subject.

Pictures of a City
(Fripp/Sinfield)

Concrete cold face cased in steel
Stark sharp glass-eyed crack and peel
Bright light scream beam brake and squeal
Red white green white neon wheel.

Dream flesh love chase perfumed skin
Greased hand teeth hide tinseled sin
Spice ice dance chance sickly grin
Pasteboard time slot sweat and spin.

Blind stick blind drunk cannot see
Mouth dry tongue tied cannot speak
Concrete dream flesh broken shell
Lost soul lost trace lost in hell.

Song for a new Av

Van Morrison

Brown Eyed Girl

Hey, where did we go
Days when the rains came ?
Down in the hollow
Playing a new game,
Laughing and a-running, hey, hey,
Skipping and a-jumping
In the misty morning fog with
Our, our hearts a-thumping
And you, my brown-eyed girl,
You, my brown-eyed girl.

Whatever happened
To Tuesday and so slow
Going down to the old mine with a
Transistor radio.
Standing in the sunlight laughing
Hide behind a rainbow's wall,
Slipping and a-sliding
All along the waterfall
With you, my brown-eyed girl,
You, my brown-eyed girl.

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
Just like that
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
La dee dah.

So hard to find my way
Now that I'm all on my own.
I saw you just the other day,
My, how you have grown!
Cast my memory back there, Lord,
Sometime I'm overcome thinking about
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium
With you, my brown-eyed girl,
You, my brown-eyed girl.

Do you remember when we used to sing

Crazy Love

I can hear her heart beat for a thousand miles
And the heaven opens every time she smiles
And when I come to her, that's where I belong
I guess I'm running to her like a river's song
She gives me love, love, love, crazy love
She gives me love, crazy love

She's got a fine sense of humour, when I'm feeling down
And when I come to her when the sun goes down
She takes away my trouble, takes away my grief
Takes away my heartache in the night like a thief
She gives me love, love, love crazy love
She gives me love, crazy love

I guess I need her in the daytime
I guess I need her in the night
Someone strong to put my arms around her
I kiss her, hug her, kiss her, hug her tight

She gives me love, crazy love
She gives me love, crazy, crazy love
A crazy love

Mighty Like a Rose

you have drowned a thousand sorrows
all in one,
and mixed with mugs and minks
and millionaires
you have done.

you've been and gone and done it
for a quid,
and just what you don't know,
up there you've got hid.

lord, you're only fourteen summers
and God knows,
child, you're getting mighty
like a rose.

you got pulled crooked
for trying to straighten up this town,
and looked bashful bribing
old, bent Barrister Brown.

you know they're turning on in the classroom,
that ain't the point.
it's when you're missing out teaching teacher
how to roll a joint.

hey, while you're down there
looking up my nose,
child, you're getting mighty
like a rose.

next time they try to fire me
make the scene.
you're getting sugar cubes for breakfast,
you know what I mean,

and the hazard of old winds
blows through your ears,
you haven't got enough of those,
what you haven't got for years.

but never mind
steppin' on my toes,
child, you're getting mighty
like a rose.

Reminds me of this...

Leave Virginia Alone Lyrics
sung by Rod Stewart / written by Tom Petty

Well I've Seen her
Down the alley
And over the hill
To steel her away
She was as hot as
Georgia asphalt
When the aircraft came
To adore her brain

So leave Virginia alone
Leave Virginia alone
She's not like you
And me
She's not like you
And me
You should've seen her
Back in the city
Poetry and jewels
Broke all the rules
She was as high as
A Georgia palm tree

(1) So Leave Virginia alone
Leave Virginia alone
She's not like you
And me
She's not like you
And me

Some sunny day
When the h... of times have
Gone farewell
You'll understand
Why it was so hard
To run away
To run away

She's a loser
She's a forgiver
She still finds good
When no one could
You want her
More than money
Cadillac can rust
Diamond and dust

[Repeat (1)]

Ah, yeah
Leave Virginia alone
Leave Virginia alone
She's not like you
And me
She's not like you
And me

Ah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,...

La, la, la, leave her alone

Oh, Virginia
Oh, Virginia
Leave her alone
