I am still living with your ghost
Lonely and dreaming of the west coast
I don't want to be your downtime
I don't want to be your stupid game

With my big black boots and an old suitcase
I do believe I'll find myself a new place
I don't want to be the bad guy
I don't want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to see some palm trees
Go and try to shake away this disease

We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die

I am still dreaming of your face
Hungry and hollow for all the things you took away

I don't want to be your good time
I don't want to be your fall-back crush anymore

I'll walk right out into a brand new day
Insane and rising in my own weird way
I don't want to be the bad guy

I don't want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to feel some sunshine
I just want to find some place to be alone

We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
And watch the world die

I don't think I will ever hear that song without being transported to a very specific place in my life and the person I was then. I had forgotten how strongly it all comes back to me until I read this.

[color=330033]A Pict Song
- Rudyard Kipling, I never heard of it until I looked that the lyrics sheet of a Billy Bragg CD which includes this

Rome never looks where she treads
Always her heavy hooves fall
On our stomachs, our hearts and our heads
And Rome never hears when we bawl

Her sentries pass on -- that is all
And we gather behind them in hordes
And plot to reconquer the Wall
With only our tongues for our swords

For we are the little folk -- we!
Too little to love or to hate
Leave us alone and you'll see
That we can bring down the state

Mistletoe killing an oak
Rats gnawing cables in two
Moths making holes in a cloak
How they must love what they do!

Yes -- and we little folk too
We are as busy as they
Working our works out of view
Watch, and you'll see it some day

No indeed! We are not strong
But we know of Peoples that are
Yes and we'll guide them along
To smash and destroy you in war

We shall be slaves just the same?
Yes, we have always been slaves
But you -- you will die of the shame
And then we will dance on your graves

We are the worm in the wood!
We are the rot at the root!
We are the taint in the blood!
We are the thorn in the foot!

If I could
~~~
I'd protect you from the sadness in your eyes
Give you courage in a world of compromise
Yes, I would
If I could
I would teach you all the things I've never learned
And I'd help you cross the bridges that I've burned
Yes, I would
If I could
I would try to shield your innocence from time
But the part of life I gave you isn't mine
I've watched you grow
So I could let you go
If I could
I would help you make it through the hungry years
But I know that I can never cry your tears
But I would
If I could
If I live
In a time and place where you don't want to be
You don't have to walk along this road with me
My yesterday
Won't have to be your way
If I knew
I'd have tried to change the world I brought to you to
And there isn't very much that I can do
But I would
If I could
If I could
I would try to shield your innocence from time
But the part of life I gave you isn't mine
I've watched you grow
So I could let you go
If I could
I would help you make it through the hungry years
But I know that I can never cry your tears
But I would
If I could
Yes I would
Yes I would
If I could
Tom Petty IT'LL ALL WORK OUT lyrics
She wore faded jeans and soft black leather
She had eyes so blue they looked like weather
When she needed me I wasn't around
That's the way it goes, it'll all work out
There were times apart, there were times together
I was pledged to her for worse or better
When it mattered most I let her down
That's the way it goes, it'll all work out
It'll all work out eventually
Better off with him than here with me
It'll all work out eventually
Maybe better with him than here with me
Now the wind is high and the rain is heavy
And the water's rising in the levee
Still I think of her when the sun goes down
It never goes away, but it all works out
YOU GOT THE SILVER
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)
Hey babe, what's in your eyes?
I saw them flashing like airplane lights
You fill my cup, babe, that's for sure
I must come back for a little more
You got my heart you got my soul
You got the silver you got the gold
You got the diamonds from the mine
Well that's all right, it'll buy some time
Tell me, honey, what will I do
When I'm hungry and thirsty too
Feeling foolish, and that's for sure
Just waiting here at your kitchen door?
Hey baby, what's in your eyes?
Is that the diamonds from the mine?
What's that laughing in your smile?
I don't care, no, I don't care
Oh babe, you got my soul
You got the silver, you got the gold
It's just your love, just leave me blind
I don't care, no, that's no big surprise
Steve Earle
The Mountain by Steve Earle
I was born on this mountain
a long time ago
before they knocked down the timber
and strip-mined the coal.
You rose in the morning
before it was light
to go down in that dark hole
and come back up at night.
I was born on this mountain,
this mountain's my home
she holds me and keeps me
from worry and woe.
They took everything that she gave,
now they're gone,
but I'll die on this mountain,
this mountain's my home.
I was young on this mountain
but now I am old
and I knew every hollow,
every cool swimming hole.
One night I lay down
and woke up to find
that my childhood was over,
I went down in the mine.
There's a hole in this mountain
and it's dark and it's deep
and God only knows
all the secrets it keeps.
There's a chill in the air
only miners can feel,
there are ghosts in the tunnels
that the company sealed.
And this is on the same album. Tom Waits is a genius, I think. :)
The Piano Has Been Drinking
Tom Waits
The piano has been drinking
my necktie is asleep
and the combo went back to New York
the jukebox has to take a leak
and the carpet needs a haircut
and the spotlight looks like a prison break
cause the telephone's out of cigarettes
and the balcony's on the make
and the piano has been drinking
the piano has been drinking...
and the menus are all freezing
and the lightman's blind in one eye
and he can't see out of the other
and the piano-tuner's got a hearing aid
and he showed up with his mother
and the piano has been drinking
the piano has been drinking
cause the bouncer is a Sumo wrestler
cream puff casper milk toast
and the owner is a mental midget
with the I.Q. of a fencepost
cause the piano has been drinking
the piano has been drinking...
and you can't find your waitress
with a Geiger counter
And she hates you and your friends
and you just can't get served
without her
and the box-office is drooling
and the bar stools are on fire
and the newspapers were fooling
and the ash-trays have retired
the piano has been drinking
the piano has been drinking
The piano has been drinking
not me, not me, not me, not me, not me
I love the " change into a 9 year old Hindu boy"
I always laugh when I hear that one and Pasties and a G string
oh and Franks Wild Years
Have I posted that one??
ok well this makes me laugh too
Franks Wild Years; - Tom Waits
Well Frank settled down in the Valley
and he hung his wild years
on a nail that he drove through
his wife's forehead
he sold used office furniture
out there on San Fernando Road
and assumed a $30,000 loan
at 15 1/4% and put a downpayment
on a little two bedroom place
his wife was a spent peice of used jet trash
made good bloody marys
kept her mouth shut most of the time
had a little Chihuahua named Carlos
that had somekind of skin disease
and was totally blind
they had a thoroughly modern kitchen
self-cleaning oven (the whole bit)
Frank drove a little sedan
they were so happy
One night Frank was on his way home
from work, stopped at the liqour store
picked up a couple of Mickey's Big Mouths
drank 'em in the car on his way
to the Shell station, he got a gallon of
gas in a can, drove home, doused
everything in the house, torched it
parked across the street laughing
watching it burn, all Halloween
orange and chimney red then
Frank put on a top forty station
got on the Hollywood Freeway
headed north
Never could stand that dog
I just finished listening to this one--it puts a tear in my eye. (I know, I'm sentimental, but gosh read the lyric--and he sings it with such jazzy pathos). :)
I Can't Wait to Get Off Work
(And See My Baby on Montgomery Avenue)
Tom Waits
Well I don't mind working
cause I used to be jerkin off
most of my time in the bars
I been a cabbie and a stock clerk
and a soda fountain jock jerk
and a manic mechanic on cars
It's nice work if you can get it
now who the hell said it
I got money to spend on my gal
but the work never stops
and I'll be busting my chops
working for Joe and Sal.
And I can't wait to get off work
and see my baby
she said she'd leave the porch lite
on for me
I'm disheveled I'm disdainful
and I'm distracted and it's painful
but this job sweeping up here
is gainfully employing me tonight
Tom do this Tom do that
Tom, don't do that
count the cash, clean the oven
dump the trash oh your lovin
is a rare and a copasetic gift
and I'm a moonlight watchmanic
it's hard to be romantic
(sweeping up over by the
cigarette machine
sweeping up over by the cigarette machine...)
I can't wait to get off work
and see my baby
she'll be waiting up with a magazine for me
clean the bathrooms, clean um good
oh your lovin I wish you would
come down here and sweepameoffmyfeet
this broom'll have to be my baby
if I hurry, I just might
get off before the dawns early light.
"I wish I was in NewOrleans" always makes me feel very nostalgic too
mmm..
In My Dreams
There was a time some time ago
When every sunrise meant a sunny day, oh a sunny day
But now when the morning light shines in
It only disturbs the dreamland where I lay, oh where I lay
I used to thank the lord when I'd wake
For life and love and the golden sky above me
But now I pray the stars will go on shinin', you see in my dreams you love me
Daybreak is a joyful time
Just listen to the songbird harmonies, oh the harmonies
But I wish the dawn would never come
I wish there was silence in the trees, oh the trees
If only I could stay asleep, at least I could pretend you're thinkin' of me
'Cause nighttime is the one time I am happy, you see in my dreams
Chorus:
We climb and climb and at the top we fly
Let the world go on below us, we are lost in time
And I don't know really what it means
All I know is that you love me, in my dreams
(Solo)
I keep hopin' one day I'll awaken, and somehow she'll be lying by my side
And as I wonder if the dawn is really breakin'
She touches me and suddenly I'm alive
chorus repeats 2x
Oho, in my dreams
Words & Music Kevin Cronin & Tom Kelly
reo speedwagon, fleetwood mac, supertramp
they all bring me back to a time i was getting my wings, leaving my hells to burn without me.
things like cutting class, smoking weed, drinking beer and skinny dippin' all them things i try to distract my daughter from, because they set a course in life of being a gutter rat in society.
but damn i'm smilin, remembering..knowing full well she'll be spreading her own wings soon and flying her own direction..smart enough to read between the lines of mums don't list. ;) lol
Dream
Dream by Steve Forbert
The signal lights jerk in the wind
and snow blows off the road like sand,
the driver squints and sets his chin,
he's got to hold the upper hand.
Saginaw by midnight, that's the plan.
And then the snow blows harder still
on covered roads and slippery hills,
this trip will surely test his will.
Dream,
dream of a Sunday
safe in bed.
Dream, dream,
with the sheets
high round your head,
home instead.
She don't sell drugs or evening news,
she's got those rosebuds in her hand.
She took those goodwill, bulky shoes
because she's got so long to stand
down where the offramp meets with Grand.
And when the dark cuts off the day,
she'll drag that box and walk away,
back to that place they let her stay.
Dream,
dream of a Sunday
safe in bed.
Dream, dream,
with the sheets
high round your head,
home instead.
Someday soon the breaks
won't bring you down,
one day
you'll wake up safe and sound.
In Dreams
Roy Orbison:
A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle star dust and to whisper
“Go to sleep, everything is all right”
I close my eyes then I drift away
Into the magic night, I softly say
A silent prayer like dreamers do
Then I fall asleep to dream my dreams of you
In dreams I walk with you
In dreams I talk to you
In dreams you’re mine all the time
We’re together in dreams, in dreams
But just before the dawn
I awake and find you gone
I can’t help it, I can’t help it if I cry
I remember that you said goodbye
Too bad it only seems
It only happens in my dreams
Only in dreams
In beautiful dreams.
Isn't that the song Rip Torn sang in Blue Velvet? (I think I remember thinking how bizarre he sounded when he did it lol).
Tath, this one's for you--I'll bet you know and love it. It's a beautiful song. :)
Never Give All the Heart
The Chieftains w/Brenda Fricker
Never give all the heart,
For love will hardly see,
For thinking of,
Two passionate wills,
If it seems certain,
Never give all the heart,
For love will hardly seem worth thinking of,
To passionate willing if it seems certain,
And they never dreamed it fades out from kiss to kiss,
For everything that's lovely is but a brief, dreaming, kind delight,
Never give the heart, out of right,
For they, for all smooth lips can say,
Have given their heart up to the play,
And who could play it well enough when deaf and dumb and blind,
With love,
Be that may, they can't afford the cost,
He who gave his heart, and lost.
They are lords who glimpse of sadness,
Have given their hearts up to the flame,
Never give all the heart...
Wuthering Heights
~ Kate Bush.
Out On the wiley, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green
You had a temper, like my jealousy
Too hot, too greedy
How could you leave me
When I needed to possess you?
I hated you, I loved you too
Bad dreams in the night
They told me I was going to lose the fight
Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
Wuthering Heights
Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window
Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window
Oh it gets dark, it gets lonely
On the other side from you
I pine alot, I find the lot
Falls through without you
I'm coming back love, cruel Heathcliff
My one dream, my only master
Too long I roam in the night
I'm coming back to his side to put it right
I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering
Wuthering Heights
Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window
Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window
Ooh let me have it, let me grab your soul away
Ooh let me have it, let me grab your soul away
You know it's me, Cathy
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy come home
I'm so cold
Down Where the Drunkards Roll by Richard Thompson
See the boys out walking
The boys they look so fine
Dressed up in green velvet
Their silver buckles shine
Soon they'll be bleary-eyed
Under a keg of wine
Down where the drunkards roll
Down where the drunkards roll
See that lover standing
Staring at the ground
He's looking for the real thing
Lies were all he found
You can get the real thing
It will only cost a pound
Down where the drunkards roll
Down where the drunkards roll
There goes a troubled woman
She dreams a troubled dream
She lives out on the highway
She keeps her money clean
Soon she'll be returning
To the place where she's the queen
Down where the drunkards roll
Down where the drunkards roll
You can be a gambler
Who never drew a hand
You can be a sailor
Who never left dry land
You can be Lord Jesus
All the world will understand
Down where the drunkards roll
Down where the drunkards roll
This Song Means Alot to me - I had it played at my Son's Funeral -It sums up basically the rest of my days without him here.
Tony Rich Project - Nobody Knows
I pretended I'm glad you went away
These four walls closing more everyday
And I'm dying inside
And nobody knows it but me
Like a clown, I put on a show
The pain is real even if nobody knows
And I'm crying inside
And nobody knows it but me
Why didn't I say
The things I needed to say
How could I let my angel get away
Now my world is tumbling down
I can say it so clearly
But you're nowhere around
The nights are lonely
The days are so sad
And I just keep thinking about
The love that we had
And I'm missing you
And nobody knows it but me
I carry a smile when I'm broken in two
And I'm nobody without someone like you
I'm trembling at night and
Nobody knows it but me
I lie awake it's a quarter past three
I'm screaming at night as if
I thought you'd hear me
Yeah my heart is calling you
And nobody knows it but me
How blue can you get?
You could ask my heart
But like a jigsaw puzzle
It's been torn all apart
A million words couldn't say
Just how I feel
A million years from now you know
I'll be loving you still
The nights are lonely
The days are so sad
And I just keep thinking about
The love that we had
And I'm missing you
And nobody knows it but me
Tomorrow morning I'm hitting
The dusty road
Gonna find you wherever
Ever you might go
I'm gonna unload my heart and hope
You come back to me
Said when the nights are lonely...
The nights are lonely
The days are so sad
And I just keep thinking about
The love that we had
And I'm missing you
And nobody knows it but me
