Stand

Sly and the Family Stone

Stand
In the end you'll still be you
One that's done all the things you set out to do
Stand
There's a cross for you to bear
Things to go through if you're going anywhere
Stand
For the things you know are right
It s the truth that the truth makes them so uptight
Stand
All the things you want are real
You have you to complete and there is no deal
Stand. stand, stand
Stand. stand, stand
Stand
You've been sitting much too long
There's a permanent crease in your right and wrong
Stand
There's a midget standing tall
And the giant beside him about to fall
Stand. stand, stand
Stand. stand, stand
Stand
They will try to make you crawl
And they know what you're saying makes sense and all
Stand
Don't you know that you are free
Well at least in your mind if you want to be

Everybody
Stand, stand, stand

Sexual Healing

Sexual Healing

(Marvin Gaye/David Ritz/Odell Brown)

Ooh, now let's get down tonight
Baby I'm hot just like an oven
I need some lovin'
And baby, I can't hold it much longer
It's getting stronger and stronger
And when I get that feeling
I want Sexual Healing
Sexual Healing, oh baby
Makes me feel so fine
Helps to relieve my mind
Sexual Healing baby, is good for me
Sexual Healing is something that's good for me
Whenever blue tear drops are falling
And my emotional stability is leaving me
There is something I can do
I can get on the telephone and call you up baby, and
Honey I know you'll be there to relieve me
The love you give to me will free me
If you don't know the things you're dealing
I can tell you, darling, that it's Sexual Healing
Get up, Get up, Get up, Get up, let's make love tonight
Wake up, Wake up, Wake up, Wake up, 'cos you do it right
Baby I got sick this morning
A sea was storming inside of me
Baby I think I'm capsizing
The waves are rising and rising
And when I get that feeling
I want Sexual Healing
Sexual Healing is good for me
Makes me feel so fine, it's such a rush
Helps to relieve the mind, and it's good for us
Sexual Healing, baby, is good for me
Sexual Healing is something that's good for me
And it's good for me and it's good to me
My baby ohhh
Come take control, just grab a hold
Of my body and mind soon we'll be making it
Honey, oh we're feeling fine
You're my medicine open up and let me in
Darling, you're so great
I can't wait for you to operate
I can't wait for you to operate
When I get this feeling, I need Sexual Healing [Ad lib]

My Love Is Like To Ice

My love is like to ice, and I to fire:
How comes it then that this her cold so great
Is not dissolved through my so hot desire,
But harder grows the more I her entreat?
Or how comes it that my exceeding heat
Is not allayed by her heart-frozen cold,
But that I burn much more in boiling sweat,
And feel my flames augmented manifold?
What more miraculous thing may be told,
That fire, which all things melts, should harden ice,
And ice, which is congeal's with senseless cold,
Should kindle fire by wonderful device?
Such is the power of love in gentle mind,
That it can alter all the course of kind.

I woke to this today and it's stuck in my brain - not that that's a bad thing. :D

Here There and Everywhere

To lead a better life, I need my love to be here.
Here, making each day of the year,
Changing my life with a wave of her hand.
Nobody can deny that there’s something there.
There, running my hands through her hair,
Both of us thinking how good it can be.
Someone in speaking but she doesn’t know he’s there.
I want her ev’rywhere, and if she’s beside me I know I need never care,
But to love her is to meet her ev’rywhere,
Knowing that my love is to share,
Each one believing that love never dies,
Watching her eyes and hoping I’m always there.
To be there and ev’rywhere,
Here, there and ev’rywhere.

David Sylvian, from the album, `Blemish`

The Heart Knows Better

I don't know how long
She's been here with me
But it's been a long time coming

Make it last forever
Make it last forever
Yes, it's been a long time coming

There's a name for this one
There's a name for that
Call me by my true name
I'll call you back
But I've no intention of seeking you out

And the mind's divisive
But the heart knows better-ha
Better-ha

And every night is wedding night in my bed
My eyes are closed but I can see
The sky stretched overhead
The mattress on the floor
A sea of faces at my door
And every night is wedding night and I'm set

And the mind's divisive
But the heart knows better-ha
Better-ha

When she whispered in my ear
What did she say?
She put her hand hard on my chest
What did she say?
Oh, but nothing really matters in the end
And if everything still matters what then?

And the air is humid and my face is wet
And the driver's much too drunk too see
But she's sitting in my place
Devastating beauty in my place
And I'm absent from the place I ought to be

And the mind's divisive
But the heart knows better-ha
Ha-ha-ha

Hotel California

Let me set the mood. It was a clear, moonlit night in Northern Kentucky. It was my graduation night. I was driving up and down country roads in the car I had just purchased 3 days prior. It was May 30, 1980. The moon was out, and the air had a slight coolness to it. There were very few clouds in the sky, and the smell of honeysuckle was intoxicating my senses something fierce. There were more fireflies(lightningbugs as we called them) out that night than I can ever remember, before or since.
I pulled away from my driveway, after having enjoyed a small graduation party at home. I did not get far down the highway when I turned on the radio, rolled down all my windows, and this is the first thing I heard blaring out of my pioneer speakers.

"..Mirrors on the ceiling,
Pink champagne on ice,
And she said,
We are all just prisoners here,
Of our own device.
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast,
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast.
Last thing I remember,
I was running for the door.
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before.
Relax said the nightman,
We are programmed to receive.
You can check out any time you like,
But you can never leave.

That is the first time I ever remember hearing "Hotel California," and to this day, I cannot listen to that song without remembering my graduation night, the night of fireflies and honeysuckle, all under a very mysterious looking moon.
~ Lonelypoet

And, there is the last part of the poem in "Nights In White Satin," by the Moody Blues.

"...Cold-hearted orb that rules the night,
removes the shadows from our sight,
red is gray, and yellow white,
but we decide which is right,
and which is an illusion."

There are many songs which "move my soul," and these two I will put at the top of my list. They are great to listen to at night!

P.S. Thank you for starting this thread! I've enjoyed it!

I was writing a part of a narritive today ... and in that narritive I wondered if Madonna changed the world in the early 90's. How many people were influenced by either her music or persona? I am trying to think of other muscians who changed culture? Any ideas? :D

The Garcia legacy is one of honor and integrity in
music. The volume of music he left is staggering. His
versatility on multiple instruments (Guitar, lead and
rythm, Steel pedal, Mandolin and Banjo) was amazing. I
think that his guitar work is some of the cleanest.
One of my personal favorites is "Eyes of the World"
from Wake of the Flood. The guitarwork is beautiful.
Those three Kantner/Slick+ albums (planet Earth), are
all great albums.
Those years of 71 through 74 or 75, for me were
musically inspiring. Many groups were at their peak
for creativity. If you look at some of the albums
released in those years, from Bowie (Ziggy Stardust),
Lennon (Imagine), Pink Floyd, (Meddle, Dark Side of
the Moon, Wish You Were Here), Led Zeppelin (4th
album), Yes (Close to the Edge, Fragile, The Yes
Album), Tull (Aqualung), Joni Mitchell (Court and
Spark), The Allman Brothers (Live at the Fillmore),
so much...
thread. AND lots more that I will mention or someone
else will! Holy Shit!!! Just how much of our generation has sold
out?

Thank you, CrackerJackheart

Muddy Hymnal
Iron and Wine

we found your name across the chapel door
carved in cursive with a table fork
muddy hymnals
and some bootmarks where you'd been

the shaking preacher told the captain's man
the righteous suffer in a fallen land
and pulled the shade
to keep the crowd from peeking in

we found your children by the tavern door
with wooden buttons and an apple core
playing house
and telling everyone you'd drowned

the begging choir told the captain's man
we all assume the worst the best we can
and for a round or two
they'd gladly track you down

we found you sleeping by your lover's stone
a ream of paper and a telephone
a broken bow
across a long lost violin

your lover's angel told the captain's man
it never ends the way we had it planned
and kissed her palm
and placed it on your dreaming head

lullaby for my lover

My life's an open book
You read it on the radio
We got nowhere to hide
We got nowhere to go
But if you still decide
That you want to take a ride
Meet me at the wrecking ball
Wrecking ball
Wear something pretty and white
And we'll go dancin' tonight
Meet me at the wrecking ball
Wrecking ball
Wear something pretty and white
And we'll go dancin' tonight.

I see your smoky eyes
Right across the bar
I've seen that look before
Shining from star to star
Though I can't take that chance
If you got time for one dance
Meet me at the wrecking ball
Wrecking ball
Wear something pretty and white
And we'll go dancin' tonight
Meet me at the wrecking ball
Wrecking ball
Wear something pretty and white
And we'll go dancin' tonight.

The restless line of cars
Goes stretchin' down the road
But I won't telephone
'Cause you might say hello
What is it makes me feel this way?
What is it makes me want to say
Meet me at the wrecking ball
Wrecking ball
Wear something pretty and white
And we'll go dancin' tonight
Meet me at the wrecking ball
Wrecking ball
Wear something pretty and white
And we'll go dancin' tonight.

A song for ... my son

Title: One Hot Momma
Artist: Trace Adkins
Album: Chrome

You're doin' all you can
To get in them ol' jeans
You want that body back
You had at seventeen
Well baby don't get down
Don't you worry about a thing
'Cause the way you fill 'em out
Hey, that's all right with me
I don't want the girl you used to be
And if you ain't noticed
The kids are fast asleep

And you're one hot mama
You turn me on
Let's turn it up
And turn this room into a sauna
One hot mama
Oh, whatta ya say babe
You wanna?

Well I know sometimes you think
That all you really are
Is the woman with the kids
And the groceries in the car
And you worry about your hips
And you worry about your age
Meanwhile I'm trying to catch
The breath you take away
Oh, and believe me you still do
Baby, all I see
When I look at you is

One hot mama
You turn me on
Let's turn it up
And turn this room into a sauna
One hot mama
Oh, whatta ya say babe
You wanna?

I can't imagine me
Lovin' someone else
I'm a lucky man
I think Daddy's got himself

One hot mama
You turn me on
Let's turn it up
And turn this room into a sauna
One hot mama
Oh, whatta ya say babe
Oh now, whatta ya say babe
You wanna?

You're one hot mama
Let's turn this room into a sauna
Whatta ya say babe
Whatta ya say baby
Hot mama, yeah

Close your eyes
Have no fear
The monster's gone
He's on the run and your daddy's here

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy

Before you go to sleep
Say a little prayer
Every day in every way
It's getting better and better

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy

Out on the ocean sailing away
I can hardly wait
To see you come of age
But I guess we'll both just have to be patient
'Cause it's a long way to go
A hard row to hoe
Yes it's a long way to go
But in the meantime

Before you cross the street
Take my hand
Life is what happens to you
While you're busy making other plans

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy

Before you go to sleep
Say a little prayer
Every day in every way
It's getting better and better

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Darling, darling, darling
Darling Sean

This reminded me..................

Good Night

Now it’s time to say good night
Good night sleep tight.
Now the sun turns out his light
Good night sleep tight.
Dream sweet dreams for me
Dream sweet dreams for you.
Close your eyes and I’ll close mine
Good night sleep tight.
Now the moon begins to shine
Good night sleep.
Dream sweet dreams for me
Dream sweet dreams for you.
Now it’s time to say good night
Good night sleep tight.
Now the sun turns out his light
Good night sleep tight.
Dream sweet dreams for me
Dream sweet dreams for you.
Good night good night everybody
Everybody everywhere.
Good night.

Night Ride Home- Joni Mitchell

NIGHT RIDE HOME
words and music by Joni Mitchell

Once in a while
In a big blue moon
There comes a night like this
Like some surrealist
Invented this 4th of July
Night ride home

Hula girls
And caterpillar tractors in the sand
The ukulele man
The fireworks
This 4th of July
Night ride home

I love the man beside me
We love the open road
No phones till Friday
Far from the overkill
Far from the overload

Back at the bar
The band tears down
But out here in the headlight beams
The silver powerlines
Gleam
On this 4th of July
Night ride home

Round the curve
And a big dark horse
Red taillights on his hide
Is keeping right alongside
Rev for stride
4th of July
Night ride home

I love the man beside me
We love the open road
No phones till Friday
Far from the undertow
Far from the overload

Once in awhile
In a big blue moon
There comes a night like this
Like some surrealist
Invented this 4th of July
Night ride home

in my lady's house
iron & wine

there is light in my lady's house
and there's none but some falling rain
this like a spoken word
she is more than her thousand names

no hands are half as gentle
or firm as they like to be
thank God you see me the way you do
strange as you are to me

it is good in my lady's house
and the shape that her body makes
love is a fragile word
in the air on the length we lay

no hands are half as gentle
or firm as they like to be
thank God you see me the way you do
strange as you are to me

"The Old Maid"

I saw her in a Broadway car,
The woman I might grow to be;
I felt my lover look at her
And then turn suddenly to me.
Her hair was dull and drew no light,
And yet its color was as mine;
Her eyes were strangely like my eyes,
Tho' love had never made them shine.

Her body was a thing grown thin,
Hungry for love that never came;
Her soul was frozen in the dark,
Unwarmed forever by love's flame.

I felt my lover look at her
And then turn suddenly to me –
His eyes were magic to defy
The woman I shall never be.

Again, I love this poet.

Title: A Little Bit More

When your body's had enough of me
And I'm laying flat out on the floor
When you think I've loved you all I can
I'm gonna love you a little bit more

Come on over and lay by my side
I've got to be touching you.
Let me rub your tired shoulders
The way I used to do.

Look into my eyes and give me that smile
The one that always turns me on
And let me take your harir down
Cause we're staying up to greet the sun.

And when your body's had enough of me
And I'm laying flat out on the floor
When you think I've loved you all I can
I'm gonna love you a little bit more

Got to say a few things that have been on my mind
You know where my mind has been
I guess I learned my lessons
And now's the time to begin

So if you're feelin' alright and you're ready for me
I know that I'm ready for you
We better get it on now
Cause we got our whole life to live through

And when your body's had enough of me
And I'm layin' flat out on the floor
When you think I've loved you all I can
I'm gonna love you a little bit more

When your body's had enough of me
And I'm layin' flat out on the floor ...

For Jazzabel...

Swingin

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Well, she was standing by the highway
In her boots and silver spurs
Gonna hitchhike to the yellow moon
When a Cadillac stopped for her
And she said, "Hey, nice to meet you, are you goin' my way?"
Yeah, that's when it happened
The world caught fire that day

And she went down swingin'
Yeah, she went down swingin'

Well, she was over twenty-one
In trouble with the law
And it didn't faze her none
She called her mother-in-law
And said I need a little money
I knew I could count on you
After that night in Vegas
And the hell that we went through

We went down swingin'
Like Benny Goodman
Yeah, we went down swingin'

Moonlight on the interstate
She was 'cross the Georgia line
Looked out the window feeling great
Yeah, it had to come in time
And she said I'm never goin' back
She said at last I'm free
I wish ma could see me now, she'd be so proud of me

She went down swingin'
Like Glenn Miller
Yeah, she went down swingin'
Like Tommy Dorsey
Yeah, she went down swingin'
Like Sammy Davis
She went down swingin'
Like Sonny Liston

for my birdbrain

Couldn't Cause Me Harm
Beth Orton

Oh yeah, you know
You couldn't cause me any harm
Although at times I may get startled
I'm not alarmed

I can see your eyes
I know when they're telling me a truth
I can feel the heart
Especially when it's on the roof
Of my mouth

There's no right or wrong
This isn't a test
And I won't lose my experience
I won't try
To put it aside
But it's all right
You know that it's all right
's all right
It's gonna be all right
's gonna be all right

And if I told you,
Would you never know to guess?
Sure, what's the point
When little often means so much less
I can see for miles
I know when you're telling me a truth
I can feel my heart,
Especially now, it's on the roof
Of my mouth

There's no right or wrong
This isn't a gesture
And I don't use my experience.
I don't try
To let it go by
But it's all right
You know that it's all right
It's all right
It's gonna be all right

JAMES BLUNT LYRICS

"Goodbye My Lover"

Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.
So I took what's mine by eternal right.
Took your soul out into the night.
It may be over but it won't stop there,
I am here for you if you'd only care.
You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.
I've kissed your lips and held your head.
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.
I know you well, I know your smell.
I've been addicted to you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

I am a dreamer but when I wake,
You can't break my spirit - it's my dreams you take.
And as you move on, remember me,
Remember us and all we used to be
I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile.
I've watched you sleeping for a while.
I'd be the father of your child.
I'd spend a lifetime with you.
I know your fears and you know mine.
We've had our doubts but now we're fine,
And I love you, I swear that's true.
I cannot live without you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

And I still hold your hand in mine.
In mine when I'm asleep.
And I will bare my soul in time,
When I'm kneeling at your feet.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow.
I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow.

Great band--English Americana music!

I'm An Angel
hank dogs

Whether or not we are aware
we are being judged somewhere.
Every action every thought you think
is etched on you indelibly.
Do I take you as I find you
despite your reputation?
I'm an angel by comparison.

Getting drawn in,
so much older.
I know I'm searching,
there's nothing here.

Sacred Life you seem to lead me
far away from what I'm here for.
If all I've seen & felt is true,
why do I feel this way for you?

Do I take you as I find you
despite your reputation?
I'm an angel by comparison.

Dance for the World
(Artist) Lionel Ritchie

Dance for the world, Dance for the world

People it's time now, Something's got to change
People, We no longer can live in pain

We've got to find the truth, We've got to know where it is
Cause we stand here together, Fighting year after year

We're lost in our search, We've been longing to find
We can't hold back no longer, Cause we're running out of time

Dance for the world (x4)

People, my people, We've gone too far, It's time now
To find out just who we really are

I know you're weary, Your hearts full of fear
I see the hope inside you, Behind all the tears

Dance for the world (x4)

If we could all just love one another,
We would see there is nothing more important
Or greater than love for the people

I would dance for the world, I would sing for the world
I would pray for the world, People dance for the world
