Poetry and Lyrics

Louden Wainwright - Motel Blues

In this town television shuts off at two
What can a lonely rock & roller do
Oh the bed's so big and the sheets are clean
and your girlfriend said that you were 18
The styrofoam icebucket is full of ice
Come up to my motelroom treat me nice

I don't wanna make no late night New York calls
and I don't wanna stare at them ugly grassmatt walls
chronologically I know you're young
but when you kissed me in the club you bit my tongue
I'll write a song for you, I'll put it on my next L.P
Come up to my motelroom, sleep with me !

There's a Bible in the drawer don't be afraid
I'll put up the sign to warn the cleanup maid
Yeah there's lots of soap end ther's lots of towels
never mind them deskclerk's scowls
I buy you breakfast, they'll think you're my wife
Oh come up to my motelroom, save my life
Come up to my motelroom, save my life

Growing Up

Peter Gabriel

folded in your fleshy purse
i am floating once again
while the muted sounds are pumping rhythm
all the walls close in on me
pressure’s building wave on wave
‘til the water breaks – and outside i go, oh

one dot, that’s on or off, defines what is and what is not, one dot
two dot, a pair of eyes, a voice, a touch, complete surprise, two dot

growing up, growing up,
looking for a place to live
growing up, growing up
looking for a place to live
growing up, growing up,
looking for a place to live

my ghost likes to travel so far in the unknown
my ghost likes to travel so deep into your space

three dot, a trinity, a way to map the universe,
three dot
four dot, is what will make a square, a bed to build on, it’s all there,
four dot

my ghost likes to travel so far in the unknown
my ghost likes to travel so deep into your space

all the slow clouds pass us by
make the Empire State look high
as you take me in your sea-stained sweetness
it spills, it tingles and it stings
all the pleasure that it brings
‘til the door has let the outside inside here

well on the floor there’s a long wooden table
on the table there’s an open book
on the page there’s a detailed drawing
and on the drawing is the name i took

my ghost likes to travel so far in the unknown
my ghost likes to travel so deep into your space

growing up, growing up,
looking for a place to live
growing up, growing up
looking for a place to live
growing up, growing up,
looking for a place to live
growing up, growing up,
looking for a place to live

my ghost likes to travel
my ghost likes to travel
moving inside of your space
my ghost likes to travel
my ghost likes to travel
moving inside of your space
my ghost likes to travel
moving inside
my ghost likes to travel
moving inside of your space
my ghost likes to travel
moving inside
my ghost likes to travel
moving inside of your space

the breathing stops, i don’t know when
in transition once again
such a struggle getting through these changes
and it all seems so absurd
to be flying like a bird
when i do not feel I’ve really landed here

A Calendar of Sonnets: January

O Winter! frozen pulse and heart of fire,
What loss is theirs who from thy kingdom turn
Dismayed, and think thy snow a sculptured urn
Of death! Far sooner in midsummer tire
The streams than under ice. June could not hire
Her roses to forego the strength they learn
In sleeping on thy breast. No fires can burn
The bridges thou dost lay where men desire
In vain to build.
O Heart, when Love's sun goes
To northward, and the sounds of singing cease,
Keep warm by inner fires, and rest in peace.
Sleep on content, as sleeps the patient rose.
Walk boldly on the white untrodden snows,
The winter is the winter's own release.

~Helen Hunt Jackson

Most lyrics on this thread appear to be chosen for sentiment, including the ones I chose myself. However, I love the sheer exhuberance and surrealism of some of the Beatles songs, they appear to come directly out of Alice In Wonderland.

I AM THE WALRUS

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.
See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly.
I’m crying.

Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come.
Corporation tee-shirt, stupid bloody tuesday.
Man, you been a naughty boy, you let your face grow long.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g’joob.

Mister city policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row.
See how they fly like lucy in the sky, see how they run.
I’m crying, I’m crying.
I’m crying, I’m crying.

Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog’s eye.
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl you let your knickers down.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g’joob.

Sitting in an english garden waiting for the sun.
If the sun don’t come, you get a tan
From standing in the english rain.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g’joob g’goo goo g’joob.

Expert textpert choking smokers,
Don’t you thing the joker laughs at you?

LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS

Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she’s gone.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmellow pies,
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,
That grow so incredibly high.
Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,
Waiting to take you away.
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,
And you’re gone.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Picture yourself on a train in a station,
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties,
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstyle,
The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes.

You're My Home
Billy Joel

When you look into my eyes
And you see the crazy gypsy in my soul
It always comes as a surprise
When I feel my withered roots begin to grow
Well, I never had a place that I could call my very own
But that's alright my love,
'Cause you're my home

When you touch my weary head
And you tell me everything will be alright
You say use my body for your bed
And my love will keep you warm throughout the night
Well, I'll never be a stranger
And I'll never be alone
Where ever we're together that's my home

Home can be the Pennsylvania Turnpike
Indiana early morning dew
High up in the hills of California
Home is just another word for you

If I travel all my life
And I never get to stop and settle down
Long as I have you by my side
There's a roof above and good walls all around
You're my castle, you're my cabin and my instant pleasure dome
I need you in my house 'cause you're my home

If You Forget Me

I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
remember
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

But
if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine.

~~ Pablo Neruda

i carry your heart with me

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

Lyrics for Song: Mockingbird
Lyrics for Album: Greatest Hits 2

Mock (yeah)
Ing (yeah)
Bird (yeah)
Yeah ( Oh yeah)
Mockin' bird now
Everybody have you heard
He's gonna buy me a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird don't sing
He's gonna but me a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring don't shine
Surely break this heart of mine
And that's why I keep on tellin' everybody
Say yeah, yeah, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, oh

Here me now and understand
He's gonna buy me a peace of mind
And if that peace of mind don't say
I'm gonna find myself a better way
And if that better way ain't so
I'll ride the tide and go with the flow
And that's why I keep on shoutin' in your ear
Say yeah, yeah, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, oh

Now everybody have you heard
Sh'e gonna buy me a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird don't sing
She's gonna buy me a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring won't shine
Yes,it will break this heart of mine
And there's a reason why I keep on tellin' everybody
Say yeah, yeah, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, oh

Listen now and understand
She's gonna find me some peace of mind
Yeah, if that peace of mind don't stay
I'm gonna get myself a better way
I might rise above, I might go below
Ride with the tide and go with the flow
And that's the reason why I keep on shoutin' your ear saying
Yeah, yeah, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, oh
Mockingbird

Yeah I might rise above, I might go below
Ride with the tide and go with the flow
And tht's the reason why I'm shoutin' in your ear saying
Yeah, yeah, yeah, oh, no, no, no, no

Lyrics for Song: I Left Something Turned On At Home
Lyrics for Album: Greatest Hits Collection 1
(Billy Lawson/John Schweers)

Well boys I hate to leave good company
But my baby just called me on the phone
And from the sound of her voice, I simply have no choice
I left something turned on at home

Well I just put a quarter in the jukebox
And it ain't halfway through my favorite song
But if I don't leave right now my whole place might burn down
'Cause I left something turned on at home

It ain't the stove, it ain't the heater
She's hotter and a whole lot sweeter
And all day long she's been there alone
Right now her arms are open, the house is probably smokin`
'Cause I left something turned on at home

Hey waitress could you cancel that order
But if its too late I'll take it to go
Boys I gotta run 'fore somebody calls 911
'Cause I left something turned on at home

It ain't the stove, it ain't the heater
She's hotter and a whole lot sweeter
And all day long she's been there alone
Right now her arms are open, the house is probably smokin`
'Cause I left something turned on at home

Right now her arms are open, the house is probably smokin`
'Cause I left something turned on at home
Yeah I left something turned on at home

Lyrics for Song: Rainin' You
Lyrics for Album: Time Well Wasted

When I looked out today
And saw that the sky was gray
I thought about the way
You loved days like this

And driving in to town
It really started coming down
Bringing me back around
To all that I miss

It feels like it's rainin' you
It feels like it's rainin' you

I didn't even run inside
Or worry about staying dry
Besides there nowhere I can hide
These feeling now

Running down my face
Takes me to another place
I can't think of another way to drown

It feels like it's rainin' you
I can't explain it
But I am baptized anew
It feels like it's rainin' you

If I had my way
It would do this every day
I would never see the sun
Because the closest I get
To holding you again
Is every time that sky opens up

It feels like it's rainin' you
I can't explain it
But I am baptized anew
It feels like it's rainin' you
It feels like it's rainin' you

 for you ~

Makes one just wanna dance,
with tha rain. Mmm dreamy~

Revolution
Lennon-McCartney

You say you want a revolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it’s evolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don’t you know you can count me out
Don’t you know it’s gonna be alright
Alright alright

You say you got a real solution
Well you know
We’d all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well you know
We’re doing what we can
But when you want money for people with minds that hate
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait
Don’t you know it’s gonna be alright
Alright alright

You say you’ll change the constitution
Well you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it’s the institution
Well you know
You better free your mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman mao
You ain’t going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don’t you know know it’s gonna be alright
Alright alright

The preacher man says its the end of time

And the Mississippi River shes a goin dry

The interest is up and the stock markets down

And you only get mugged if you go down town

I live back in the woods you see

My woman and the kids and the dogs and me

I got a shotgun a rifle and a four wheel drive

And a country boy can survive

Country folks can survive

I can plow a field all day long

I can catch catfish from dusk till dawn

We make our own whiskey and our own smoke too

Ain't too many things these ole boys can't do

We grow good ole tomatoes and homemade wine

And a country boy can survive

Country folks can survive

Chorus

Because you can't starve us out and you can't make us run

Cause when them ole boy raised on shotgun

We say grace and we say ma'am

If you ain't into that we don't give a damn

Verse

We came from the West Virginia coal mines

And the Rocky Mountains and the Western Skies

And we can skin a buck we can run a trot line

And a country boy can survive

Country folks can survive

I had a good friend in New York City

He never called me by my name just HillBilly

My GrandPa taught me to live off the land

And his taught him to be a business man

He used to send me pictures of the Broadway Night

And I'd send him some homemade wine

But he was killed by a man with a switch blade knife

For forty three dollars my friend lost his life

I'd love to spit some Beechnut in that dudes eye

And shoot em' with my ole 45

Cause a country boy can survive

Country folks can survive

Chorus..................

Verse

Were from North California and South Alabam

And little towns all around this land

And we can skin a buck and run a trot line

And a country boy can survive

Country folks can survive

Country boy can survive

Country folks can survive..............

For you and Toots, Ange. I thought of you as soon as I heard it. Donna Summer tried her best, but Richard Harris made this song his. I love it so much.

Mac Arthur Park

Spring was never waiting for us, girl,
it ran one step ahead as we followed in the dance.
Between the parted pages and were pressed in love's hot fevered iron
like a striped pair of pants.

Mac Arthur's Park is melting in the dark,
all the sweet green icing flowing down.
Someone left the cake out in the rain;
I don't think that I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it
and I'll never have that recipe a-gain, oh, no.________________

I recall the yellow cotton dress foaming like a wave
on the ground around your knees.
The birds like tender babies in your hands and
the old man playing chequers by the trees

Mac Arthur's Park is melting in the dark,
all the sweet green icing flowing down.
Someone left the cake out in the rain;
I don't think that I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it
and I'll never have that recipe a-gain, oh, no.________________

There will be another song for me for I will sing it,
there will be another dream for me, someone will bring it.
I will drink the wine while it is warm
and never let you catch me looking at the sun,
and after all the loves of my life,
after all the loves of my life,
you'll still be the one.

I will take my life into my hands and I will use it,
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it.
I will have the things that I desire
and my passion flow like rivers to the sky,
and after all the loves of my live, oh, after all the loves of my life
I'll be thinking of you and wondering why.

Mac Arthur's Park is melting in the dark,
all the sweet green icing flowing down.
Someone left the cake out in the rain;
I don't think that I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it
and I'll never have that recipe a-gain, oh, no.________________
Oh, no.________________ Oh,_______________no,_______________
No, no, no, oh, no.__________

Hey baby! So good to see you. I've been thinking about you.

Here is one of my favorite songs ever. For you. (Did I ever tell you I had a major crush on Stephen Stills for years? ;) )

Carry On

One morning I woke up and I knew that you were really gone.
A new day, a new way, I knew I should see it along.
Go your way, I'll go mine and carry on.

The sky is clearing and the night has gone out.
The sun, he come, the world is all full of light.
Rejoice, rejoice, we have no choice but to carry on.

The fortunes of fables are able to sing the song.
Now witness the quickness with which we get along.
To sing the blues you've got to live the tunes and carry on.

Carry on, love is coming, love is coming to us all.

Where are you going now my love?
Where will you be tomorrow?
Will you bring me happiness?
Will you bring me sorrow?
Oh, the questions of a thousand dreams,
what you do and what you see,
lover, can you talk to me?

Girl, when I was on my own,
chasing you down,
what was it made you run,
trying your best just to get around?
The questions of a thousand dreams,
what you do and what you see,
lover, can you talk to me?

xxxooo from me and T.

Central Reservation
Beth Orton

Running down to a central reservation
In last night's red dress
And I can still smell you on my fingers
And taste you on my breath
Stepping through brilliant shades
Of the color you bring
But this time, this time, this time
Is whatever I want it to mean

If this is where memories are made
I'm gonna like what I see
And everything I ever took for granted
I'm gonna let it be
I step through every shade
Of the color you bring
But this time, this time, this time
Is whatever I want it to mean

And everything and nothing is
As sacred as we want it to be
When it's real
Compared to what?

It's like living in the middle of the ocean
With no future, no past
And everything that's good about now
Might just glide right past
I'm stepping through brilliant shades
Of the color you bring
But this time, this time, this time
Is fine just as it is

And everything is sacred here,
And nothing is as sacred as I want it to be
When it's real
Compared to what?

Catch the Wind

In the chilly hours and minutes
Of uncertainty
I want to be
In the warm hold of your loving mind.

To feel you all around me
And to take your hand
Along the sand
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind.

" To His Fairest Valentine Mrs. A. L.

"Come, pretty birds, present your lays,
And learn to chaunt a goddess praise;
Ye wood-nymphs, let your voices be
Employ'd to serve her deity:
And warble forth, ye virgins nine,
Some music to my Valentine.

"Her bosom is love's paradise,
There is no heav'n but in her eyes;
She's chaster than the turtle-dove,
And fairer than the queen of love:
Yet all perfections do combine
To beautifie my Valentine.

"She's Nature's choicest cabinet,
Where honour, beauty, worth and wit
Are all united in her breast.
The graces claim an interest:
All virtues that are most divine
Shine clearest in my Valentine."
And learn to chaunt a goddess praise;
Ye wood-nymphs, let your voices be
Employ'd to serve her deity:
And warble forth, ye virgins nine,
Some music to my Valentine.

"Her bosom is love's paradise,
There is no heav'n but in her eyes;

insert cool guitar lick here

Sick at heart and lonely,
Deep in dark despair.
Thinking one thought only-
"Where is she, tell me where?"
And if she says to you
She don't love me,
Please give her my message.
Tell her of my plea.
And I know
That if she had me back again,
I would never make her sad.
I've got a heart full of soul.

She's been gone such a long time,

Several iterations of cool guitar lick to fade out

Note to A: Get ee to play it for you. He probably knows it, but here's the tab. I used to do the Chris Dreja part on an electric 12-string (vurry muffly, though, to emulate the acoustic sound).

Merci. The Yardbirds were a great band (that was before Jimmi Paige became Satan, lol).

I've always loved that song. Used to have it on the hard drive of my old computer, but I can't find the disc I burned it on, darnit.

And yes, I'll get the birdman to play it for me. That's the ticket. (It will be a most welcome change from Smoke on the Water, which his youngest just learned how to play and I, hence, have heard about 6,000 times over the past two days.) <headache emoticon>

A recent poem of past love's reminiscence, Even when my hair went grey by Minervous brought this old favorite back to mind.

He Went To Paris
by Jimmy Buffet

He went to Paris looking for answers
To questions that bothered him so
He was impressive, young and aggressive
Saving the world on his own.
But the warm Summer breezes
The French wines and cheeses
Put his ambition at bay
And Summers and Winters
Scattered like splinters
And four or five years slipped away.

Then he went to England, played the piano
And married an actress named Kim
They had a good life, she was a good wife
Bore him a young son named Jim.
And all of the answers and all of the questions
He locked in his attic one day
'Cause he liked the quiet clean country living
And twenty more years slipped away.

Well the war took his baby, the bombs killed his lady
And left him with only on eye
His body was battered, his world was shattered
And all he could do was just cry.
While the tears were falling, he was recalling
The answers he never found
So he hopped on a freighter, skidded the ocean
And left England without a sound.

Now he lives in the islands, fishes the pilin's
And drinks his green label each day
He's writing his memoirs and losing his hearing
But he don't care what most people say.
Through eighty-six years of perpetual motion
If he likes you he'll smile then he'll say
Jimmy, some of it's magic, some of it's tragic
But I had a good life all the way.

And he went to Paris looking for answers
To questions that bother him so.
