I think technique is something that we learn in order that we might eventually transcend it. By mastering technique, a poet moves beyond the need for technique.
If I may draw a parallel to one of my other passions, the martial arts:
Most martial artists agree that the real soul of an art is not found in technique, and yet we all spend years training technique ad nauseum. Find a real master who's been doing this for decades and come at him with everything you've got; after he throws you on your ass, ask him, "What technique was that?"
He's likely to answer, "I have no idea."
A lot of writers I used to know thought technique was confining. I think that the mastery of technique is the ultimate liberation. I've got a long way to go before I get there, though.
