Privacy No Longer A Right

I'm just confused about what's going on here. I agree there needs to be control on certain areas, involving children, death etc.

I also think they should be clearer. We're not all up on politician speak.

These laws are intentionally left vague as a sort of catch-all. It allows them to make arrests for otherwise bogus reasons. Kind of like the "patriot" act. I sense another victorianesque age of sexual repression.

Web sites do not kill/harm people physically.

People kill/harm people physically.

Seriously- I think that banning snuff type pornography would be a good thing. Stop it from the buyers side. Much like child pornography, snuff films harm/kill others so someone else can get thier jollies off. So ban away, no problem...

There are a lot of violent images out there. Not just BDSM related. Shall we also ban violence of movies as well? There are those who think it would be a good idea (I sometimes think some movies do go a bit too far myself). It becomes a matter of "Who gets to draw the line" on what is acceptable and what is not acceptable material. There are people who would like to ban the Tabletop RPers because they "kill" others in a fantasy/altered reality setting. What will stop them from becoming violent? (I'm a tabletop pen and paper RPer - I've never gone out and killed/maimed or physically struck anyone because of playing a game) Do we ban NC-17 and R rated films? Do we prevent broadcast news from showing images of wars and riots? To we remove photos from the Front page of newspapers?

At some point most people will say - "Get real, that is ludacris!" But where does the line fall? Who gets to decide? This is why it is important to know who your elected officials are and to vote on them. Because they are the ones who get to decide where the line is drawn. SOme of them listen to the people calling for the line to be drawn very far from where the average person would want it to be.

Very well said Private Label.

I'm not sure of the situation in other countries, but in the UK (and the US?) we seem to have a nanny state that wants to control many aspects of our lives, and are deeming us unable to make mature, adult decisions for ourselves. We seem to be becoming so risk averse and overcautious and scared of being sued that we are being over-legislated by our governments.

I can see there becoming a time when people are going to get totally fed up with all this meddling with their lives, especially their private lives, and something will happen. I hope I don't sound too overdramatic, but I can see in the near future people getting so fed up of the way things are, with state meddling in their lives, crime, red tape etc. that things are going to change, and quite soon!

Just gets more and more ridiculous....I heard an interview with a supposedly highly skilled and respected psychologist yesterday who was being interviewed about child sexual abuse and the signs people should look for to recognise a potential perpetrator. He was asked if porn, not just kiddie porn but all porn, was a good indicator.....his answer was yes, anyone who shows any unusual or marked interest in any form of porn or sexual behaviour outside the 'accepted norm of decent people' (which he basically classed as very mild vanilla) should be watched closely and not trusted around your chldren as they are most likely child molestors!!

 So any guy who ever looked at a playboy is a "potential" molestor.
That is like saying anyone who has read anything by Karl Marx or Adolf Hitler is a potential socialist/communist/facist/pick a lable.

Didn't the USA have enough of this with the McCarthy Hearings? Didn't we learn anything from them?

I agree there should be tags that will allow parents to filter/block what their children are exposed to on line, but I firmly believe that parents should not allow the Television or the Computer to become a way to entertain the children when the parents are too busy to pay attention to what the kids are seeing and responding to in these mediums.

I don't want young children looking at explicit violence or sex, on the other hand, I don't want to be prevented from reading about what was happening with the snipers who attacked in the Northeast USA, or some of the more intense information from the current status of what is happening in New Orleans, or the stories I can find on Lit.
