question from newbie

Ah, good, the actual authority speaks. Thanks for reporting back and kudos for tracking it down Kimbalee, although it looks like you'll have to do some trimming from your story. But the good news is that the site is willing to accept extroardinary risk on song lyrics, the most litigious segment of the industry.

Too bad this isn't covered in the site FAQs. Maybe there's some place the editors here can get this permanently posted(?)

...and wonder of wonders: Laurel said exactly what I'd already said were her guidelines for Lit.

And even bigger wonder, she answered Kimbalee when she dares not answering hewhoIshallnot name.

Yet, he'll continue to tell people who don't know any better that I "don't contribute anything to the site besides yakking" and will make like he knows every god damned thing, when he doesn't know diddly squat.

Amazing what some doofuses can convince themselves of.

Bless his little stupid heart. I believe he has issues with women...can't stand it when we're smarter than he is. :D

Yep, she sure did confirm that's the policy of the site. And, yep, it surprises me, as it isn't industry standard, and song lyrics are the most dangerous segment of the industry in terms of lawsuits.

But then, I never said it wasn't the policy of the site--I said it was important enough to find out what the actual policy of the site was (and it's too bad it's not covered in the FAQs) rather than rely on those who don't bother to document their advice.

All of the personal stuff dredged up on the thread, though, has been added by posters other than me who obviously have an agenda and are eaten by grudges and have no compulsion about being nasty (and more than a little childish) about it. :)

What did I say again? Let's see.....I think it was:

Laurel's policy on lyrics is that you can use approx. 50% of the song's lyrics in story, but they must be credited.

I apparently know a good bit more than you, regardless of when you think my last story was submitted. (and you're wrong about that, too....just so you know)

I apparently know a good bit more than you.

About this, you certainly did--except you apparently couldn't (or wouldn't) document it--which was what was suggested. It wasn't claimed you were wrong. And anyone taking on a risk like this would be really dumb just to take any undocumented opinion (including mine, as well--but then I provided documentation for industry practice and suggested how to get answers for what I couldn't document, Web site policy) dropped on an Internet discussion board. Kimbalee wasn't being dumb--she held out for the authoritative source, as I and others suggested she might want to do. Good for her.

And happily for you (and me), you got to spew some more bile and exhibit your posting persona some more--and pull in your "moderator" sidekick to exhibit herself as well.

So everyone leaves happy. :)

Oh, we both "know." You've changed your tune. Last time we covered this, you said you were too busy with homelife to post stories (but now apparently not too busy to claim to be editing here). Before that you said you had withdrawn and sold a slug of them (but nothing has been posted and withdrawn in the last two years from your listings here--nor would you ever identify where they went). Now you say you are posting them under another name (or, no, you didn't quite say that, you said maybe you are). All a bunch of hooey, of course. You're just here to yak--and to play the nasty badmouther posting persona--which is a whole lot easier than actually writing and contributing stories to the site. You know it and I know it. But if pretending makes you feel adequate . . . :)

Believe whatever you like, I don't give a rat's ass. I don't owe anyone an explanation, and I most certainly don't owe you a damn thing. I have absolutely no intention of explaining anything I do or I am to you. Who the fuck are you to me?

No skin off my nose, donkey boy. Just keep on livin' in that warped reality you're so fond of.

And yet you pop a blood vessel and go all trailer trashee on me from out of the blue regularly--all while claiming you have me on ignore. No, you don't care much at all. No, indeedy, you don't. :D

I swear, you've got to have a jones for me or something, since you absolutely can't resist answering every post of mine you see.

I have a man. Would NEVER be interested in you, get it? NEVER. You're too much of an asshole, and I've already dealt with my share of those this lifetime.

Go bother your wife, and stop bothering the hell out of me.

Back to the original question

If you're still out there Kimbalee, I did have a comment about your song lyrics post.

I am a newbie also and my first story submitted contained lots of song lyrics. I admit that I was not as conscientious as you have been in checking beforehand, although I did mention the artist in the text of the story each time. Lit posted the story without a problem. As far as my liability, I honestly never gave it much thought. Maybe I should have.

I look forward to reading your story.

Chip

Hi, welcome here, Chip. Maybe I should say that I'm a goody-2-shoes girl who would rather die than get into trouble of any sort-or cause anyone else here to succumb to the same fate-as an explanation of why I was asking beforehand. So sue me, I care about people. (but not literally sue me, that's kinda what I was trying to avoid here...)

The story at the minute is in a rewrite stage since I used way over the 50% rule- more like 95% of the song. I am working on it and hope to get it up, er um no, post it ASAP. (blushing, hubby isn't even in the room with me, how would I get it up?) I hope it doesn't disappoint when I finally get it finished after all of this. Thanks for the interest.

The powers that be are so busy tracking down those who copy music files that I doubt they'd be overly concerned about a few words being "borrowed". That's just my humble opinion. This is Lit, it's not as if you're profiting from the lyrics. I've quoted lyrics before, as have others.

I'm not saying SR is wrong, he's the master of technicalities. But sometimes good sense trumps that.

I didn't think I would have a problem here. With the nature of the lyrics being so explicit, taking them out of context would be really difficult. I was concerned about staying within the guidelines so that I didn't have to keep rewriting and trying to resubmit a bunch of times. Oh, yeah that and I'm a big wussy scaredy cat, too. :)

Whew!

<Wiping sweat from brow> Good idea! I wouldn't want to have to keep editing and editing and editing... LOL.

Just wanted to say that the story form this thread was submitted last night, if anyone gives a crap after all the discussion about the use of lyrics. Thanks to all of those who helped with their thoughts on it, and especially to AsylumSeeker- you're my hero, dude! Thanks for editing for me.

(holds breath and whats for comments like, "who gives a shit, shut up about it already!)

Not sure that's quite right, AS. The writers here may not be profiting from the publications of stories, but the owners are.
