Reaction

Reasons

Seems to me that the originator of this thread is pretty solopsistic. Listen, sweetheart, if the only reason you're in the writing thing is for response, you're not much of a writer. I mean, yes, we all like to know how we're doing, and we all want to keep our readers in mind, but trying to write the TRUTH and present your vision should be more important.

If you feel so strongly about how you expect readers to react to you, write a how-to on it and submit it.

I thought of something this evening. Readers need writers in order to read, but writers don't need readers in order to write.
Excellent thought. :rose:

So do you mean there are no true artists but the starving artists? As for only doing it right if you don't do it for the money

-Is that what I said? I don’t think that’s what I said. (But maybe it is. Cuz I’m totally broke).
-Who’s making a living off this stuff? Anyone? Supplemental income maybe.

Since we're only discussing opinions here, I'll share mine. I wrote long before there was any reader for my ramblings, and I'll likely do so long after. Heck, sometimes it's just about getting it all out on paper and making the inside of my skull less noisy.Knowing that I've touched, stirred, or tickled a reader out of blasé apathy is nice

((Opinions) Totally, man. I’m pretty direct. I want to establish a strong opinion. But I don’t mean to say, ‘If you’re not on my wagon you’re inept.’ I am just an opinion.

I hear what you’re saying there and I can very much respect that you use writing to answer some questions for yourself. So do I. Absolutely.

But the way it happened for me… I got lucky. I had been writing lyrics in my metal years. And then that gate started to close. And I discovered the internet (- old guy). And email. And then someone led me to the ACLU. And people were writing incredible shit there. And after a while I finally had the guts to join in. And had they not responded as generously as they did? That would have been it. End of story. But they liked it enough. And I got excited and kept on going until I finished ‘Sorry, Wrong Number’.

And then they CLOSED the ACLU (ironic, isn’t it?).

And I found Literotica. And I posted. And that fucker went #1 out of the box. And I flipped out. I went from, I dunno, maybe 15-20 have read this, to – 100s of people are reading this and I don’t suck!!!

And that got me seriously fueled and the result was I improved drastically as a writer because I suddenly felt that it mattered. And that I owed it to these people to get better and better. I was heavily motivated.

And that is how important reaction is. It is the catalyst and it cannot be neglected.

I would like to help the reader understand how important they are (I just told you a story where they basically BUILT a writer! I went on to write a few unsold screenplay’s, yay me. But that ain’t the point). They need to KNOW how important they are. And they need to know WHY! What we actually want from them. And that if they give us that? We will be more apt to supply them what they need.

So that’s why I got so upset. That, what I want them to see from us… did not appear at all. The opposite occured.

PS But please never use the word apathy unless you’re degrading it. In fact, I’m going to change my Sig…

Read it before you do that, Kitt.

Kurt Vonnegut once said: "Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia."

First of all, while Kurt Vonnegut was very entertaining, and had a nice grip on awareness... he was not Martin Luther King. I will appreciate his reality. But I will not accept ours.

We need to do better.

Do readers need to be empowered? I wasn't aware there was a reader power shortage? :)

Ouch. That was a very ugly thing for you to say. That bothers me.

That is PRECISELY what I'm talking about. How the hell could you say that?!!

Very well then, advantage your readers as if they are marks on a popularity chart. That should do well for your craft.

>>> Sorry to force myself down your throats 3x, but I dunno how to answer 3peeps and not make it look like shit. My bad.

You're underestimating your readers. Give them more credit... they don't need a writer to tell them they're useful. What arrogance!

My little attempt at humor was just to point out that readers aren't short on knowledge... and they don't need you to tell them how to behave.

I won't patronize them. Obviously, you will.

BTW, I've read Ayn Rand. I've got a bachelor's in English... I had to.

Double X calls BULLSHIT!

[Nice n' screwy on the 'reader' thing (I don't have readers - you do!). But I totally call bullshit on all your crap above that. And it's going to cost you very unnaceptably exposed sex with myself in the person of, um .... something bitchin.]

eat it and smile
