Republicans are quite simply un-American

As a system of government, democracy has proven quite long-lasting in the United States, though it has evolved and changed considerably since its 1789 vintage. A good part of the reason is that whatever its disappointments and shortcomings, American political elites have remained committed enough to democracy’s basic principles – accepting the legitimacy of political opponents, and accepting that parties can lose elections fair and square. In practice, this means not using power to restrict the civil liberties and voting rights of political opponents, and not declaring electoral losses illegitimate and responding with violence.

The Republican party of 2021, and especially its leaders, have now abandoned those principles. At a national level, they have refused to accept the legitimacy of the 2020 election results, and encouraged or condoned violence. At a state level, they have abused their power to change the rules in ways that restrict voting rights. Though these anti-democratic sentiments have been building within the ranks of the party for years, the events of 2021 mark the transformation of the Republican party into a party that is opposed to freedom of the press, free and fair elections, the peaceful transition of power, freedom and democracy. They are a grave threat to everything that the United States of America stands for.

The modern day Republican Party is an extreme and authoritarian party unlike any other conservative party in the 1st world democracies. The GOP is the only major conservative party in the world that rejects universal health coverage, the science behind climate change, marriage equality and gun safety reform.

As early as 2012, prominent political scientist Norm Ornstein made this prescient quote: “The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science: and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.”

This authoritarianism has translated into sheer radicalism. The GOP no longer believes in the peaceful transfer of power and free elections. The GOP knows that it needs to rig the political system so it can never lose because its platform is so unpopular and toxic.

Prominent? If he can't understand that in America we elect politicians to NOT do things, he isn't very smart, nor does he really understand American citizens.

Ornstein is co-author of this, which seems a bit dated post-Obama but really is worth a read.

 No, that is not why we elect politicians. America is not the Bizarro Planet.

Who said anything about Bizarro? This country was founded by men who believed that when government stays out of the way of people, they will flourish. Republicans campaign on that idea, although many don't seem to know exactly what it means.

Many of the Founders -- Hamilton, for instance, whose memorial should be put up in place of Jefferson's -- had very different ideas.

Being American means more than being a large clump of people who were born on American soil. Being American means believing in the values that our Founder Father’s codified in the United States Constitution back in 1787. After we fought and won our independence from the British Monarchy, me made certain that America would be nothing like a monarchy, a theocracy or a dictatorship.

Americans believe in Freedom of Speech, we believe in Freedom of the Press, we believe in Freedom of Assembly. We believe in Freedom of Religion. We believe in Separation between Church and State. We believe in trials before a fair and impartial judge. We also believe in Separation of Powers between the three branches of government, to make it hard for one person to accumulate too much power and thus become a dictator.

More and more, we are seeing that Republicans reject American values.

Donald Trump tells us that the United States Constitution is a “really bad thing” and expresses frustration that the Separation of Powers keeps him from acting like a dictator.

And George W. Bush said, “Stop throwing the Constitution in my face. It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”

Republican presidents, Republican governors, Republican senators, Republican congressmen etc. all swear an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, but in reality they view the Constitution as an inconvenient obstacle that impedes their authoritarian plans to stop minorities from voting, crush civil rights groups, terrorize black people and destroy labor unions.

Many of the Founders -- Hamilton, for instance, whose memorial should be put up in place of Jefferson's -- had very different ideas.

Yes and they debated it and thankfully people like Hamilton didn't win out. The needs of New Yorkers, are different than Floridians. Texans have different needs than both Floridians and New Yorkers. The more local the control, the better.

You are not a liberal.

Not the "liberal" that uneducated Americans use as a synonym for Democrat...no matter how fuckin authoritarian and collectivist they get???

No absolutely not. I'm not ignorant and uneducated enough to make that mistake.

But liberal proper? As in a liberty centric political/world view? I very much am.

Yea, that whole decentralization that makes it so fucking difficult for authoritarians to bully here in the US sure does keep the lefts panties in a wad.

I'll never understand their burning need to put a gun to 150 million peoples heads in other states, far away and force them to live the way THEY think others should be forced to live. :D

They're a bunch of psychotic control freaks......that's why they pretend and hide behind labels like "liberal" and "progressive".

You are not a liberal.

I don't think there is a more clear example of how right wing radio, Fox, other cable right wing propaganda news sources, and YouTube whackadoodles have been successful at repeating this mantra...

"Dems are not liberals.... conservatives are the liberals".

It is not correct, historically or currently, it does have nuance...which I'll leave out for now and it has been very effective propaganda for the right and far right.

BoBo is a authoritarian Facist for sure...he could be a liberal if he changed his ways.

The GOP's war on America and our rights as American citizens continues to intensify

As Republican lawmakers continue their assault on Americans' voting rights, they are also waging war on protesters. Across numerous states, Republican lawmakers are drafting bills to restrict citizens' First Amendment rights. For example, in the state of Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a Republican-led legislative piece titled, HB 1, or the Combating Public Disorder bill.

The controversial bill, which DeSantis has described as the "strongest anti-rioting, pro-law enforcement measure in the country," aims to escalate penalties for protesters. Instead of demonstrators being charged with misdemeanors for protest-related crimes, Florida lawmakers have sought to upgrade the same charges to felonies.

The publication notes that the bill also "increases discretion for police, prosecutors, and judges— in at least 14 states, contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars to the campaigns of the bills' sponsors." Due to the many stipulations the bill levels against protesters, law enforcement advocacy groups have heavily backed the bill.

The law would also give law enforcement agencies more flexibility to charge groups of protesters rather than just individuals. For example, if a protester vandalizes a vehicle, another protester in close proximity could also face charges regardless of whether they were involved in the physical act or not.

However, according to In These Times, Max Gaston, a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida, has pushed back against the governor's claims and his support of the bill. Gaston argues that "HB 1 is not an anti-riot law. It is an anti-protest law that suppresses First Amendment rights by criminalizing peaceful protest and silencing government dissent."

Under the bill, Under HB 1, Gaston notes that "virtually every major demonstration in the last several years, from the Women's March to the March for Our Lives, would have involved a heightened level of danger from police and counter-protesters."

Absolute garbage. Photo ID for everything except voting is ridiculous.

Keep it legal so Dems can't cheat.

I love how upset the left is that the right isn't buying into their fantasy that the USA is some unitary state run by simple democracy.

If you need to block traffic to get your point across, you've already lost any chance at trying to convince other people. Additionally, ever since Hurricane Andrew tore through Dade County, the rule here is you loot, we shoot. The rest of the state finally caught up. There's a reason you didn't see much of that nonsense in Miami.

How about the nonsense in DC? Didn’t Ashli Babbitt read the memo?

That's not fair. The smarter ones among them know it's that thing with the Second Amendment in it.

Libertarians are not liberals.

Libertarians are not liberals.

You're probably aware of this by now, but he's simply applying the classical definition of "liberal" to the modern political landscape, where it has very different shades of meaning. That plus he's rather dishonest with himself about his own views.

Libertarians are not liberals.

Yes they very much are, they just don't recognize positive liberty nor do they support the governments role in providing it.

This makes them about as RW as it gets on the 'spectrum' if you will of liberalism.

You assumptions and lies aren't any dishonesty on my part.

That's the actual definition of liberal to the common US political landscape where dishonest leftist and idiot Republicans have bastardized the word. ;)

Grab an academic resource for a change and learn your words son.:kiss:
