I believe there's such a thing and I believe I've fallen victim. As others have mentioned, I also have never heard someone complain about the high an orgasm provides.

An addiction, at least to my way of thinking, doesn't have to be a detriment. People are addicted to working out so why not sex? It's a similar rush. Endorphins, oxytocin, increased circulation.... It's supposed to be fun, or we wouldn't survive as a species.
That being said, as long as you're not letting it take the place of your real world needs, I don't think it's a bad thing. You just have to make wise choices. Std's are real. If you're not healthy, sex can kill you. Conversely, you don't want to go to jail either. So be careful where you fuck. And who you fuck. But other than that, game on!

Given that there's sex addiction, I'd rather have that than alcohol, smoking, or gambling as an addiction. As long as you have a sexually addicted partner, it's the best situation you can have.

I think I understand what you're getting at and I've wondered the same thing.
One of my psychology teachers was an addiction counselor. She piloted and ran a county program for drug and alcohol addicts who had been convicted for substance abuse related crimes, ie drunk driving, possession, etc. She explained that there are two criteria that have to be met for substance abuse to actually be considered an addiction. It's defined by tolerance and withdrawal. A person can heavily abuse a substance with adverse impact to one's life, but if the two criteria aren't met, it's not a physiological addiction. However, we use addiction in a more broad sense, meaning, as someone already mentioned, an activity or substance which is used compulsively and can be maladaptive. It might be more accurate to define so called sex addictions as impulse control disorders. However, I haven't done a lot of research on the issue, so it's completely possible that I don't know what the heck I'm talking about.
Either way, it can be pervasive and destructive.

You're addicted if you put important stuff (health, job, reputation, family) at risk to feed your habit. Sex can certainly meet that definition.

So how do you "cure" it? Total abstinence forever?

I have been told by three women that I was a sex addict.
With each of these I wanted sex for the third time in a day. Three times is not abnormal but I am 62 and they wanted to go to the beach or some such.
I think I am not addicted because I can manage without, but when I have a woman I want to have fun.

Sexual addiction certainly is a category of addiction. Having lost jobs because of it as well as expended ridiculous amounts of money, I've attended SA meetings. There are several other sexual-addiction-12-step groups, which split off or organized separately because the original SA will not recognize gay marriage. Leave it to addicts to be intolerant.

And dependence and addiction aren't the same thing. People can develop a dependence to a substance, but not have it classified as addiction.

Adrenaline is a stimulant, endorphins is a brain chemical similar to an opiate, and large amounts of the hormone oxytocin, (often called the cuddle hormone), is released into the bloodstream during sex. People can easily become addicted to their own body chemistry, and sex hormones are no exception. Being addicted to your own body chemistry is normal and not a problem, as long as you don't let it take over your life.

No I don't believe in: sexual Addiction.. Two of the last three trigger your body to crave more, Alcohol later becomes addictive, though I believe Alcoholism, is hereditary. Why you ask, because Alcoholism runs through my family blood line.
As for sex...not addictive, what one becomes addicted to.....POWER & CONTROL

I think it is a term to rationalize our lack of self control. Though some would say it is the adrenaline that they are addicted to, I would just say they were male or female sluts.

Is it realy a matter of sex addiction, or is it that some of us enjoy sex so much we can not stop wanting it. I dont want to give it up, it gives me a reason to wake up every morning, to enjoy during the day, and the last thing to do at night. I dont want sex with everybody, where as perhaps a sex addict would.
