In fact, I'd rather not remember them, because I get them mixed up with reality. I haven't been able to remember them for so long, if I started remembering them, I'd be totally confused. I don't like being confused.

I can relate to this, during the past year or so I have had dreams which feel like a memory of things that happened when my sons were young. Yet when I wake up it is very clear the incidents I remembered never actually happened. Nothing in the dreams have been awful, they have been simple ordinary stuff such as a conversation or a day out. Nothing special.
They leave me puzzled and confused as to why I would think such a thing.
I usually remember my dreams but they used to be a patchwork quilt of ordinary stuff in my subconscious. Not all of them, some were very bizarre or ones which would cause me to wake up terrified.
I have a fear of the dark which may account for some of the terrible dreams I have had.
In an odd way the ones that seem to be a memory are more unsettling than any other sort.
Retrival, it sounds like you used to be able to have lucid dreams.
