If cigarette smoke didn't smell bad to non-smokers, it wouldn't even be an issue, I don't think. If it smelled like wood smoke, or even pipe tobacco, I think more non-smokers would be amenable to smoking, maybe even admit how sexy it is, health risks be damned. Just my one cent.
