Spurious Voting

Re: Spurious votes... Spurious Feedback

I've seen the same thing on every story. Someone votes a one when the story seems to be doing consistant fours and fives. That's just irritating. I can live with it.
What really bothers me is on my last story, for instance, I received 42 emails marked Feedback. Of the 42 one was an actual comment on the story while the other 41 were guys who just want to stick their tongue up my ass and had no comment about the story at all. Sheesh!

Now that's what I call brown-nosing!

Question on voting

I have been reading this discussion on voting or the lack of, and wondered how you can find out when readers vote a 4 or 5 on your story? I would like to know how readers are voting on my stories. I have been able to see the overall score, but not a specific vote score.

Thanks

In two words Pagen. You can't. (Does a contraction count as one word?)

If that were possible (I'm not saying it impossible, but for contributors to the site it's not possible) then you would be able to seek out those who gave you low votes and do the same to their stories out of spite.

Voting is anonymous (to the writers) and should IMO remain so, however nice it would be. You'll just have to rely on feedback (also often anonymous) for single votes cast.

And you also can't work out what votes you got, beyond the first few.

If you've only had one vote, your rating has to be a whole number like 3.00.

If you've had two votes, then 3.00 can mean two 3's, or a 2 and a 4, or a 1 and a 5.

If you've had three votes, then 4.67 can only come from one 4 and two 5s, 4.33 comes from two 4s and one 5, or one 3 and two 5s...

Obviously, this rapidly becomes incalculable as you get more votes. Poetry often languishes at only one or two votes, but most stories get tens of votes shortly after going up.

All people can tell is, where they had a 4.57 yesterday, they now have a 4.43, say. If they also knew the number of votes they had, they can see how many new ones have come in. In lucky circumstances they might just be able to ascribe the drop to a single vote or two, and calculate what they must have been. But personally I think if you can do this you're watching too hard.

And drops can come from good votes as well as bad. If I see a story I like, I think 'Hey! Well done! Better than average. Here's a nice big juicy 4 for you.' - Of course, if it was previously on 4.17 then my 4 lowers its rating.

Don't worry about the votes.

I will try not to rely too much on the votes. The feedback has been wonderful and helpful. I understand a lot better now. I guess I had the wrond idea about voting score. Thanks.

About what votes have been cast: actually, in some cases you can figure it out.

My "Anniversery Vacation" at 120 votes had a score of 4.80, and the next time I checked (yeah, I get anal about votes sometimes) I had 121 votes and a score of 4.77. The math is easy: 120 * 4.8 is 576, 121 * 4.77 is 577, an increas of one vote and an increase of 1 in the total voting score.

You have to love number crunching (or have too much time on your hands) but as a result of a comment someone made about two identical stories I posted, with slightly different titles. and seriously different voting scores, I did a fairly detailed analysis and concluded voting scores don't mean much. That is, if the total number of votes are about 200, and your score is say 4.6, there's at least something like a 30% chance it could have been 4.5. (I dopn't remember the exact probability, but it's in that region).

The point is, don't worry too much about votes.

Tonytony3 (who likes feedback best, but takes vote score as a reasonable alternative).
