Hey, Anna, when they say "We no longer accept work that has been previously published on the web," do you think they mean Lit also? Would it make any difference if the poem were only on the forum and not submitted?

Good question, Cherry. I do not consider work published at Lit (on the forum or in the new poems) to be previously published. However, when I start to send a poem around, and especially when it is accepted somewhere, I pull it from lit. Some people pull their work from the forum as well when it is published, but I have not taken it to that level.

I used to tell editors that a poem was workshopped, no one ever cared so I stopped writing it. I have read a few places that specifically say that they do not even want work that has been workshopped online -- but they should say that.

Good luck!

Eep! Don't think I could submit without using a pseudonym or it'd be traced back to here, I think. Maybe using a pseudonym, though. I'll think on it. And thank you a bunch for clarifying the ins and outs of web publishing for me a bit, Anna.

Cheers. C.o.S.

New Deadline and Guidelines for Snowvigate's Printed Anthology of Online
Writing

In an attempt to make the nominations as extensive as
possible, we have changed the deadline and guidelines
for our anthology. You are now able to nominate MORE
than 3 writers, as long as your total amount of links
does not go beyond 20. The new guidelines are
explained below in paragraph 3 of this revised
release.

Also, fiction and non-fiction is NOT limited to
"flash." These submissions can be of any length.

Thank you,

Doug Martin

As a result of a generous grant from Indiana State
University, Snow*Vigate Press will be publishing a
printed anthology of the best on-line writing which
has appeared over the past ten years. Hopefully the
anthology will be released in August 2007.

The book will include poetry broken into lines, prose
poetry, flash fiction, long fiction pieces, creative
non-fiction, and 10 minute plays. If you would like
to nominate your own on-line work or work from others,
please follow these guidelines:

Paste the URLs of no more than 20 works in the body of
your email. You may nominate ONE piece from 20
different writers, or a total of 20 pieces from a
combination of writers (ONE piece from SIX different
writers, FOUR pieces from ONE writer, and 10 pieces of
your own writing, for example). The combination does
not matter, but please limit your submissions to no
more than 20 links. In the subject line of your
email, please type "Submission to Snow*Vigate
Anthology." Send all submissions to
dougmartin832(at)yahoo.com (Replace
(at) with @)

Work from any on-line site is acceptable, as long as
it has not been published in printed form.

The submission period will end on October 15, 2006.

If you have any questions, please contact Doug Martin
dougmartin832(at)yahoo.com (replace (at) with @).

oooh I just know some women who outta send their work in....

rats, the don't ask for poetry but....

ATTENTION WOMEN WRITERS!
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
THE BIGGER, THE BETTER, THE TIGHTER THE SWEATER
BEAUTY, BODY IMAGE, AND OTHER HAZARDS OF BEING FEMALE
Slated for Winter 2007
http://www.sealpress.com/submissions/index.html

The statistics are staggering. Eighty percent of American women are
dissatisfied with the way they look. Twenty-two percent of college women claim to “
always” be on a diet. Americans spend more than $40 billion on diet-related
products each year. Since 1997, there has been a 465 percent increase in the total
number of cosmetic procedures performed, accounting for $12.5 billion in 2004.
But statistics only tell a small part of the story.

We are simultaneously taught to scrutinize ourselves and to feign
nonchalance. We are supposed to care whether our jeans make our butts look big but we all know how obnoxious it is to actually ask if they do. To speak honestly about
our bodies is a rare thing. To speak honestly and be funny about it is a
triumph.

THE BIGGER, THE BETTER will be an anthology of personal narratives that have
at their hearts a funny story but that aim higher or delve deeper without the
need to be politically correct or particularly uplifting. It will help paint
an entertaining and realistic portrait of our feelings and attitudes about our
bodies with all their complexities and contradictions.

We are looking, first and foremost, for truly funny writing. But, humorous
anecdotes are not enough. These humor pieces will also be exceptionally
well-written personal essays by women willing to explore the complexities of their
relationships with their bodies and appearances. Tell secrets, admit defeat and
triumph, expose underbellies, be honest. We are particularly interested in
voices that may not get much coverage in the mainstream. We want strong,
developed, first-person writing that goes beyond mass market journalism.

Some likely topics include:
Ideas of perfection and imperfection vis a vis race, body type, skin color
and personal taste
Plastic surgery
Pregnancy/motherhood
Beauty knows no pain: dye jobs, plucked brows and bikini waxes
Ready to Wear: fashion, cosmetics and the right shoes
The Female Form: rolls, jiggles and dimples
Learning to love or loathe a body transformed by illness or injury
Taking it Off: sex with the lights on
Support: Filling out a bra, or not
Obsessions: Seeking toe cleavage, a hairless chin, or eternal perkiness
WTF?!: Puberty

Editors: Samantha Schoech and Lisa Taggart are editors and writers living in
the Bay Area. Together they edited TIED IN KNOTS: FUNNY STORIES FROM THE
WEDDING DAY (Seal Press, 2006), which contains good examples of the type of essays
being sought for THE BIGGER THE BETTER.

Publisher: Seal Press, an imprint of Avalon Publishing Group, publishes
groundbreaking books by and for women in a variety of topics.
Deadline: October 15, 2006
Length: 2,500-6,000 words
Format: Essays must be typed, double-spaced, and paginated. Please include
your address, phone number, email address, and a short bio (50 words) suitable
for publication on the last page. Essays will not be returned.

Submitting: Send essay electronically as a Word file (with .doc extension) to
Samantha Schoech and Lisa Taggart at bodyessay(at)mac.com
(replace (at) with @). Put “The Bigger, the Better” in the subject line. If
email is not possible, mail the essay to Lisa Taggart at 1480 Santa Clara St.,
Santa Clara CA 95050.

Payment: $100 plus two books

Reply: Please allow until January 1, 2007, for a response. If you haven't
received a response by then, please assume your essay has not been selected. It
is not possible to reply to every submission personally.

Scriblerus Press string theory anthology

Written by Sean Miller
Sunday, 20 August 2006

Scriblerus Press seeks short creative works that are inspired by--or engage in some way--with string theory for an upcoming anthology.

Writers are invited to submit either a poem, a short story, or an essay. Fiction may be, but is by no means limited to, science-fiction.

Works should be submitted by May 31, 2007.

Poems should be no more than forty lines.

Short stories, no more than 7000 words.

Essays, no more than 5000 words.

The work should not have been previously published in the United States.

We strongly prefer that you submit works for consideration electronically--as a Word, RTF, or PDF attachment. Please use the Submit Work form.

You may also submit your work in an email addressed to the editor: editor AT scriblerus DOT net

The body of the email should include a one or two sentence synopsis of the work, along with a brief biography of the author.

You may also submit work with cover letter via snail mail. Hard copies of short stories and essays should be double-spaced with one inch margins all around on 8.5" x 11" white paper--with the name of the author and page number on each page. Pages should be joined only by paper-clip. In order to receive a response, include a SASE with your submission.

We will make every effort to acknowledge receipt of your submission within a week. Anthology inclusion decisions will be made in June of 2007.

In addition to their overall literary merit, works will be judged on the basis of the originality with which they engage string theory.

An honorarium of US $20 will be offered for each work along with two copies of the anthology upon publication.

Send no more than five minimalist style poems in the body of an email with “Poetry Submission” as your subject header.

Do not send Word files or other attachments.

Previously published or simultaneous submissions will not be accepted.

Include your full name, address, email address and a brief biographical statement.

An author whose work is accepted grants beside the white chickens one time electronic publication rights, with the option of one time printing rights in a hard copy anthology.

This journal is a non profit entity. No compensation for published work is given but you may use your inclusion as a publishing credit.

Please send contributions to
poetry@besidethewhitechickens.com

..................

My Personal Note:
Never give up if you believe in a poem. I submitted a poem to about 6 places before I found the right home for this one. This journal is very tasteful, lovely, simple, and the editors are kind and good people.

Six Little Things

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

SIX LITTLE THINGS (www.sixbrickspress.com) is a quarterly online literary
magazine devoted to an underappreciated genre, the short prose thing. Some call
them "prose poems," others "short short stories," and you may feel free to
argue amongst yourselves all you'd like, but I am happy calling them very nice
paragraphs and recommending a maximum count of 250 words.

Every issue of Six Little Things contains six original works, each written by
a different writer and each responding to a previously announced theme or
phrase. Issue #4, "Hooray for Reality," is currently online, and features writing
by Michelle Billings, Don Campbell, Jessica Del Balzo, Jason Fraley, Rose
Gorman, and Theodore Worozbyt, and collage artwork by Sean Neary.

Submissions are currently open for issues number five (theme: "Tiny Tiny
Objects": Deadline November 30th) and six (theme: "Mortal Enemies": Deadline
February 28th). Authors submitting work are agreeing to one-time reproduction as
part of an issue of Six Little Things and the continuing availability of their
work as archived in the context of that original issue. Issues will be archived
indefinitely.

Please direct submissions and inquiries to Bard Cole at the email address:
editor(at)sixbrickspress.com (replace (at) with @).

Each issue also spotlights a visual series as well. Visual artists are
encouraged to inquire about the magazine's needs.

Gravity Pulls You In

a work in progress, is an anthology of beautifully written essays that
describe the experiences of parents raising children on the autism spectrum. We are
looking for the piercing truth that can be funny, irreverent, illuminating,
tender, moving, but always deeply respectful. We invite all voices that will be
at once familiar to any parent but also specific to those moving in the world
of autism. When the reader picks up this book, it will be either out of
recognition or curiosity but when they put it down, the simple and complicated
details from these stories will create the possibility of greater connection and
understanding among us all.

We are currently accepting submissions of prose and poetry, not to exceed
5,000 words. Deadline: January 15, 2007. Please send entire manuscript with SASE
to K. Anderson, 53 Christopher Street, Wakefield, RI 02879. It will not be
possible to return manuscripts.
Feel free to direct any questions to kyra(at)gravitypullsyouin.com

21 Stars Review

21 STARS REVIEW

21 Stars Review is an electronic journal of poetry and prose from new and established writers, with a focus on new writers.

We strive to publish work of the highest quality. How this looks in practice, of course, depends entirely on the biases, tastes, and other quirks of the editors. We have a strong leaning toward work that uses constraints, innovative meter and form, or carefully executed collage/cut-up techniques. Prose with amazing sentences will be preferred over prose with unamazing sentences. Plotless or intricately-plotted very short fiction (ideally under 1000 words) is also something we enjoy.

Of course, it's quite easy to write work that uses constraints, meter, carefully executed collage/cut-up techniques, prose with amazing sentences, or plotless or intricately-plotted very short fiction. The hard part is making it compelling—something a reader will want to read again and again. In other words, please send us work we'll want to archive forever.

If you have a particular affinity for or interest in John Ashbery, Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, Emily Dickinson, Annie Finch, Barbara Guest, Sadeq Hedayat, Amy Hempel, Paul Hoover, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Franz Kafka, Jackson MacLow, Harry Mathews, Lorine Niedecker, Flann O'Brien, Frank O'Hara, Georges Perec, Gilbert Sorrentino, Gertrude Stein, Wallace Stevens, Arthur Sze, or Diane Williams, we would especially like to read your work.

21 Stars Review acquires first electronic rights; therefore, please do not send work that has appeared previously in any other electronic journal. We will consider reprints from print journals. We reserve the right to reprint any work in future 21 Stars Review anthologies. At this time, our publishing schedule will largely depend on how many suitable submissions we receive. Please allow three months to review your work before inquiring about its status, although likely you'll hear from us well before then.

Simultaneous submissions are encouraged, as what's not right for us may be right for someone else; we don't want to be responsible for impeding the process for you. Just let us know if you get good news from somebody else.

Send all poetry submissions to poetry21stars at gmail dot com and all prose to prose21stars at gmail dot com. If you don't know whether it's prose or poetry, that's OK—send it to either address.

This is a good one :)

I really like this journal, do not read it as often as I would like to, but very classy.

Call for Submissions -- (please circulate widely)

Literary Mama, an internationally-acclaimed online literary magazine
(http://www.literarymama.com) seeks top-notch writing for a special March 2007 issue:

Stepparenting.

According to The Stepfamily Foundation, 64% of families today live in some
form of divorced and/or stepfamily relationship. From Snow White's evil witch of
a stepmother to Hamlet's stepfather (who killed Hamlet's dad, married his
mother, and stole the throne), stepmothers and stepfathers get a bad rap in
literature. And the stepparent point of view? Rarely seen and explored.

For our Special Issue on Stepparenting, Literary Mama seeks fiction, creative
nonfiction, literary reflections, poetry, and a guest column ("Faces of
Motherhood") BY stepparents ABOUT the stepparenting experience.

Deadline: December 31, 2006

Our guidelines vary by department. Before submitting, review individual
guidelines at: http://www.literarymama.com/submissions/
