In the eighties or nineties a club in Poole (in Dorset) started a ladies night, where women got in free and (as I recall) got one free drink. This quickly became what was known slightly unkindly amongst men as "grab a granny night" with lots of single and married women going along for a good time. It was definitely a night when lots of people were up for fun and there was lots of pairing off on the dance floor, in dark corners and outside in the car park. The idea caught on with a number of Bournemouth clubs starting similar nights.

My first wife went to a couple of nights but bailed when the married friends that she went with started getting very friendly with men, it definitely led to a couple of divorces.
