The BDSM Book Club Discussion Thread

Heir To The Shadows by Anne Bishop

Did you like the book overall or not?

I'm so/so on it. I liked it better than the first volume in the series. I cared a bit more about the characters and there was a little more story.

However there are still huge holes in the back story which either, doesn't exist, is in the author's mind but not shared with readers or is just shallow as all hell.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Absolutely not. I've found this to be true of other books in which the men are supposed to be subs. Instead of being dominated they are tortured. WTF?

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Not really. There weren't many. They didn't work that well for me.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Somewhat. Not much.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

A little interested. Not much.

What did you like best about this selection?

It was better than I expected and better than the prior volume.

What did you like the least?

The stupid misspelled names really piss me off and jars me.

The horrible supposed domination by males or females really pisses me off and jars me.

The lack of back story to make it understandable really pisses me off and jars me.

How would you have changed the story?

I would have used better names that did not interupt the flow of the book each time they were used.

I would have had people dominate but not main, break or kill the subs.

I would have put enough back story into the whole thing that you cared about and understood the characters, worlds and story being told.

Heir To The Shadows by Anne Bishop

Did you like the book overall or not?

No. It was rambling and confusing.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Not really. It portrayed slavery - the real kind. I did not see any evidence of BDSM.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Not really.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

No.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Not really. This is the second book of hers I've read, and I didn't like either of them.

What did you like best about this selection?

. . . i can't think of anything. Quite frankly I didn't finish it I was so bored.

What did you like the least?

Um, that it was so confusing and hard to follow.

How would you have changed the story?

I would have taken the time to explain stuff and not just assumed that you were psychically in tune with the author.

I've never read any Anne Bishop books, but I've been recommended them a few times, after reading your responses, I'm not sure I can be tempted.

:rose:

I'm pretty sure some people love them. I'd like to hear from some that do in order to attempt to understand why.

This volume at least was working toward putting the worlds right after they'd gone very far off course and be corrupted. That was part of what made it a little better. The "good" guys were getting the power and cleaning house a little.

June

As previously decided, Naughty Fairy Tales from A to Z edited by Alison Tyler will be the June 2008 BDSM Book of the month!

Described as "a hot twist on fairy tales." Several erotic writers took well known fairy tales and turned them into erotic works of art. In this book, Cinderella is a Dominatrix and Zoe White lives with seven whores. These are the cutest erotic stories I've ever read and there's one for each letter of the alphabet.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...52285552&itm=7

Starting with "All McQueen's Men" and ending with "Zoe White and the Seven Whores," these twenty-six tales give new meaning to the expression "bedtime stories." Wicked stepsisters tell how they really earned their reputation. The Ugly Duckling seduces her high school crush at her ten-year reunion. Cinderella is a dominatrix -- until midnight. And Goldilocks tries out many things before finding what feels "just right." Clever, flirtatious, and always naughty, these titillating tales will leave you lusting for more.

Discussion of this month's book, Submission by Martha Blau may begin, May 31 at midnight your time.

I hope we have lot's reading with us! I've already read this book. I don't generally like short stories but I enjoyed this book a lot! Happy reading!

I couldn't find it at the used book store. I REALLY WANT TO READ IT - I've heard good things about it, but I've just gotta wait.

Submission by Martha Blau

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Sometimes I did. Much of the time they were a complete turn off.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

No. There really wasn't much story in the book at all. Also, there were no likable characters for me in the book.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

No. Not at all. There were some BDSM activities but they weren't done in ways that were realistic. There was also a good bit of simply group sex.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

No. I really wouldn't.

What did you like best about this selection?

That the lead character finally cut the so called Dom loose. I was happy when she saw him for the arrogant, prick, wannabe he really was.

What did you like the least?

The exhibitionism everywhere. Other people didn't bat an eye no matter where they were. If this is the real way parties and public places are in France I might not want to visit after all.

The break the toy moves. Clips on for hours? No thanks.

The sit and wait for me but I don't show up parts and the get the girl off but don't actually have sex with her crap. It all seemed pointless to me. It seemed like fiction written by someone who didn't know much about BDSM but thought it was a cool idea.

The way the lead character went for a stranger who whispered in her ear, not caring about her husband, son, friends or job. WTF?

The way the resolve was the lead character "dying" (inside?) and then letting the Dom go. No, BDSM doesn't kill you inside or out. *sigh* Talk about a bad message.

How would you have changed the story?

I would have there be a story.

I would have made this more like a real D/s relationship. Which to me is that people get to know one another first or play in a public place by mutual consent and/or negotiation.

I would have had a more empowering view of BDSM in the book.

It's time to pick a book for July 2008!

Here are the nominations so far:

1.) Kushiel's Justice by Jacqueline Carey

Bestseller Carey's fifth book in her Kushiel's Legacy series, volume two of her Imriel fantasy trilogy (after 2006's Kushiel's Scion), is a moody tale of violence and divided loyalties. Phèdre nó Delaunay, the sexually adventurous heroine of the first trilogy, has become a placid foster mother to Prince Imriel, son of the unseen traitor Melisande Shahrizai.

Carey's infamous explicit sex scenes now portray Imriel's illicit and often violent affair with Sidonie, daughter of Queen Ysandre. Their romance is frustrated by Imriel's obligation to marry Dorelei, an Alban princess, and beget future rulers of Alba. When Dorelei and her unborn son are betrayed and Imriel is badly wounded, he finds himself torn between his vow to avenge his wife and child and his desire to seek solace in Sidonie's arms. His inner conflicts are ameliorated by religious faith, a change from previous books that may please some readers and dismay others. Imriel serves well as protagonist, however, and events are clearly building to what promises to be a spectacular climax in the sixth volume.

2.) Queen of the Darkness , by Anne Bishop.

"Queen of the Darkness" is the third and last book in Anne Bishop's extraordinary "Black Jewels Trilogy." This is a strong novel which truly enhances the material in the first two books and provides a most fitting conclusion to this epic series. I would strongly advise reading the books in order, beginning with "Daughter of the Blood" and then "Heir to the Shadows" to best appreciate the intricate story, characters and unique world that Ms. Bishop has created. I only wish the author had written a quartet!

3.)The Challenge (Mass Market Paperback) by Susan Kearney

She was shot protecting the president, and woke up naked, in the arms of a hunk....A hunk named Kahn, who told Secret Service agent Tessa Camen an outlandish story about traveling through time, saving the world, and a Challenge only she can accept. Kahn offers her proof she can't refute: Tessa has been brought forward through time to save Earth by winning an intergalactic challenge. Kahn only has a few weeks to train Tessa to use the psi-abilities he insists she has. He is confident in the success of a time-honored method that uses sexual frustration to bring out her powers, but Tessa is dubious. She's a martial arts expert and can fight her way through anything, but she's never had much luck with emotions.Luckily for Earth, Kahn can be very convincing....

4.) Shocking Pink edited by Erica Spindler

Andie Bennett and her two friends, Raven and Julie, lives were changed during the summer they were fifteen. What started out as a lark between three teenage girls soon turned into something deadly.

For Andie, seeing the shocking sexual acts performed by two faceless people was horrifying. She had never realized that there were people in the world who got satsifaction from the sick sexual acts she has witnessed. Raven was facsinated by the control that 'Mr. X' had over 'Mrs. X'.

All her life she has strove for control over her life and the people in it. Julie has always believed her father, the Reverend that she was the spawn of the Devil and is heartbroken to find herself aroused by the acts that she has seen go on in the abandoned house. Then their world was rocked when one night, Mr. X left and Mrs. X was found dead two days later.

5.) Topping From Below by Laura Reese.

The title of this devilishly pornographic?albeit literate?novel is taken from the argot of sadomasochism and refers to a rebellious dynamic in which the dominant partner (the "top") is subtly manipulated by the submissive partner (the "bottom"). After her young sister, Franny, is found murdered?bound, gagged and mutilated?Nora Tibbs, a journalist for the Sacramento Bee, discovers in Franny's computer a diary that details her brief affair with "M.," an arrogant music professor in his late 40s. Cruelly exploiting the overweight, love-starved woman, M. forced Franny to submit to a humiliating gamut of outre sexual practices. Convinced that M. is Franny's murderer, Nora sets out to prove his guilt by pretending to submit to his depraved aberrations. But, to her astonishment, she discovers a dark, pagan side of herself when M. enthralls her with intense, if perilous, sexual pleasure. Graphic descriptions of exotic sexual practices (bondage and discipline, sadomasochism, bestiality, etc.) accumulate, counterpointed by Nora's sweetly romantic relationship with a fellow reporter. The suspense, a bit attenuated by thin secondary characters, also is muted by artless foreshadowing, but the conclusion is satisfying in a savage sort of way and Nora's plunge "down, all the way down" under M.'s manipulations will keep most readers gripped even as they're aware that Reese's shameless pandering is manipulating them in turn. Comparison to Story of O is well earned. 100,000 first printing; Literary Guild and Doubleday Recommended for adult fiction collections.

6.) Mona Lisa Awakening (Monere: Children of the Moon, Book 1) by Sunny.

http://www.amazon.com/Mona-Lisa-Awak.../dp/0425211606

Lisa is an ER nurse who knows that she is different from everyone around her. She has the ability sense a persons pain. This has never been a problem until one night her life changes when an injured man arrives with a wound and for some reason this pale yet handsome man draws her like no other. What is his pull on her?

She goes to help Gryphon and her eyes and sensual self are awakened. He tells her she is different because she is part Monère a group of humanoids that came thousands of years ago from the moon and if that's not enough she is one of their Queens. They are children of the moon and Gryphon is running from a queen who has poisoned him. He is willing to help Lisa learn of her past so she can focus on her future. This trip to self awareness is going to challenge everything she thought she ever knew about herself.

This was an amazing read. Both creative and sensual. A true feast for the readers delight. Gryphon and Lisa as well as the rest of cast of this book are truly entertaining. Readers need to remember that this is a fantasy romance and therefore they need to suspend their beliefs. I eagerly look forward to Sunny's next effort and until it's available I highly recommend "Mona Lisa's Awakening."

7. Top of Her Game by Emma Holly

Style and sensuality. Power and passion...There's something about the Parisian boutique Meilleurs Amis that provokes all who enter to blur the line between business and pleasure. No one knows this better than Beatrix Clouet, the daughter of its infamous and not-so-dearly departed founder, and her best friend-and new management trainee-Lela Turner.

Now, as they try to get their professional and personal lives on track, these best friends will have to weigh the price of love and lust-while making their wildest fantasies come to life... --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

8.) One Dark Night by Jaid Black.

Finally! A Jaid Black book with a meaningful plot! I was actually engrossed in the mystery of this little who-done-it and not just in the sex scenes. Reading many of Jaid's other stories is a cross between the story line of a cheap porno and the sickeningly sweet endings of a childhood fairy tale. But not this book! Amazing! I hope she keeps it up!

9.) Gordon by Edith Templeton.

Originally written under a pseudonym, this thrilling novel of passion in post-World War II London was banned upon its publication in the late 1960s, and is only now being republished under the author’s real name. Edith Templeton creates an indelible character in the smartly dressed Louisa, a savvy young woman in the midst of a divorce who meets a charismatic man in a pub and within an hour has been sexually conquered by him on a garden bench. Thus begins her baffling but magnetic love affair with, and virtual enslavement to, Richard Gordon.

10.) Slave Trade (Mass Market Paperback) by Susan Wright

Human slaves can never defy their alien masters -- or can they?

Rose Rico never believed the rumors, that the government was secretly selling human beings to the Alphas in exchange for advanced alien technology. The idea that human sex slaves were a luxury item throughout the galaxy was just too ridiculous to take seriously -- until Rose found herself, along with hundreds of other human captives, bound for the far reaches of space, and compelled to cater to the depraved desires of her new alien masters.

As a rule, pleasure slaves don't live very long, especially the stubborn ones. But Rose refuses to give up. Someday, somehow, she'll win back her freedom -- or die trying!

The beginning of a provocative new saga of slavery and rebellion.

13.. Choke by Chuck Palahniuk

Victor Mancini is a ruthless con artist. Victor Mancini is a med-school dropout who's taken a job playing an Irish indentured servant in a colonial-era theme park in order to help care for his Alzheimer's-afflicted mother. Victor Mancini is a sex addict. Victor Mancini is a direct descendant of Jesus Christ. All of these statements about the protagonist of Choke are more or less true. Welcome, once again, to the world of Chuck Palahniuk.

"Art never comes from happiness." So says Mancini's mother only a few pages into the novel. Given her own dicey and melodramatic style of parenting, you would think that her son's life would be chock-full of nothing but art. Alas, that's not the case. In the fine tradition of Oedipus, Stephen Dedalus, and Anthony Soprano, Victor hasn't quite reconciled his issues with his mother. Instead, he's trawling sexual-addiction recovery meetings for dates and purposely choking in restaurants for a few moments of attention. Longing for a hug, in other words, he's settling for the Heimlich.

14. Slaves of the Empire by Aaron Travis.
Steven Saylor in disguise, his hot porn still includes marvelous details of Rome at its dirtiest, wealthiest, and most kinky.

15. Two Moons: Worthy of a Master Book One (Paperback) by Chelsea Shepard

On Earth, MeganÂ’s sex life was never satisfying. But when she allows herself to be abducted by visitors from a planet where sadomasochism is regarded as a healthy social activity, she wonders if she got more than she bargained for.

MeganÂ’s adjustment to the erotically liberated Khyrians becomes even more difficult when she falls for one of the starshipÂ’s pilots, a professional Master with a troubled past. Struggling with fears and doubts, but spurred by her overwhelming passion, Megan will do whatever it takes to earn his love.

Two Moons: Worthy of a Master is a dazzling delight for fans of romantic bondage. With deftly rendered characters, captivating scenarios and surprising twists, Chelsea Shepard charts the course of a woman challenged by her deepest desires, a journey that will take her literally out of this world!

16. Carrie's Story: An Erotic S/M Novel (Paperback) by Molly Weatherfield

At the outset, I should say that once you have read Carrie's Story you will probably want to read the sequel "Safe Word". This book is outstanding as an exploration of BDSM. Told from the submissive's viewpoint (ie as a first person narrative) it affords us a marvellous insight into the mind of someone who would place themselves at the mercy of another person, fully understanding of the pain and suffering that might result. But of course it also provides the answering motivation, the intensity of experience, the absolution from decision, the pleasure obtained from subordinating one's own desires to those of another.

It is the self-critical (what other reviewers have termed sassy) self-awareness of the central character that carries throughout this novel that makes it so special. This is delivered in a light-hearted, but brutally honest manner.

No question it is highly erotic. But there are many other novels that achieve that. This one transcends the mere erotic and captivates the reader. The author generates a tension that draws the reader on and enfolds you in the story. I have not found that in an erotic novel since reading The Story Of O - and I can give Carrie's Story no better praise than that comparison.

17. Breaking the Girl by Kim Corum

See what all the fuss is about. "I wasn't a slave. I was a willing participant." "His name was Frank. Just Frank. His last name really doesn't matter. It was Smith or Jones or Gallagher or... Hell. Just pick one. They're really all the same. I didn't know that much about him." "Maybe Frank classified me as a whore." "I stopped talking, begging, pleading. Plotting. I wasn't going to win him over. It was his way or no way. And I knew that. So it was his way." "I just wasn't that kind of tie me up, tie me down, beat me, switch me, hold me tight, love me forever' kind of girl. Frank was that kind of guy. Which made me that kind of girl." "And when it was over, we fell away from each other gasping for air." ".he brought the money-in fifties and hundreds-to me, delivering it in a bank bag. Delivering it to me with a big smile on his face, as if he were happy to deliver it, glad he could accommodate me. Who was the real slave here?" Breaking the Girl-a story of white hot sex and submission.

18. The Love Slave by Bertrice Small

From the classic Skye O'Malley series to Love, Remember Me, Bertrice Small's enchanting, exotic, and erotic tales have won her a multitude of fans. Her latest passionate adventure tells the tale of a fiery Celtic beauty and an Arabian master of erotic arts.

19.The Darker Side of Pleasure by Eden Bradley.

http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Garden-Ed...sn_rs_edpp_url

A deliciously potent tale of one woman’s quest for self-discovery

Rowan Cassidy likes to be in charge—especially in her personal life. 20.)The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson

This has been a huge bestseller all of Europe and for good reason. It is a crime novel which combines a great plot with really powerful themes such as intolerance and corporate corruption. I'm really looking forward to the next two books in the trilogy.

21.) Playing Easy to Get by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jaid Black, Kresley Cole

Naughty Fairy Tales from A to Z

Did you like the book overall or not?

Overall it was a good read, I don't usually enjoy short stories, and some of these were really short, but this was a neat read.

One story stuck out to me that the editing seemed off but the rest were really well written.

There seemed to be a positive spin in each of the tales the reader is left feeling that the subject got exactly what they wanted.

I enjoyed the book, not on the top of my list of favorite authors/stories, but a good read. I might pick up another book by this editor.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the book. I did too, even though, like you I'm not a big fan of short stories.

Thanks for the post!

Woo hoo! Now we can discuss the book for June.

Naughty Fairy Tales from A to Z edited by Alison Tyler. I enjoyed the intro. I found the title Editrix particularly amusing! It didn't promise to be BDSM just Naughty and in this, it suceeded.

All McQueen's Men by Alison Tyler

I liked this one. I liked the whole Fuck Poker, we are not putting this relationship back together concept! It was kinda hot when the sex was actually going on too!

Bells On Her Toes by M. Christian

This one was less to my taste. I do like the idea of contact after death as long as it's benign because I think closure is difficult for most of us who've had such terrible losses. The problem is this wasn't exactly benign. There was a suicide attempt after all. It was told from what seemed to me to be a male POV which didn't appeal to me either.

Clever Jack by Tyler Morgan

This was the first story that actually had some BDSM in it. I liked it quite a lot. It got the flavor of what I think D/s is right. Fiction so rarely does that. I found it very refreshing that way.

Ducks to Swans by Mia Underwood

Hmm, except for a brief mention of foot worship there was no BDSM in this. Of course there was some hot lesbian sex. That alone doesn't do it for me. The whole cheerleader and roles assumption thing really bothers me. So this one didn't thrill me much.

Early Delights by Florence Howard

This was an original fable. I rather loved it. It certain felt like an older and more authentic tale to me than many but it was also sexy as hell to me. It wasn't BDSM at all to me though.

For Want of a Nail by Molly Laster

This was an amusing little piece. I really enjoyed it. It was in a Kink Club too! One of my favs of the collection.

Goldilocks and the Three Pairs by Echo Thomas

I loved this story too! It was kinky with some BDSM. There was some humor and some hot sex! What's not to love?

Hannah and Greta by Erin Sanders

I never much liked Hansel and Gretel. This story was fairly faithful to it's template. I didn't much like it either.

If the Stiletto Fits by K.C.

I loved the humor in this story. Yes, there was some D/s. It was just really cute and fun!

Jo White and the Cocksucker Red by Xavier Action

This one struck me as mean. I didn't like it much. I guess there was some reluctance play in it.

Kings Counting House by Julia Moore

This story was quite beautiful to me. There was some great BDSM in it but it was the internal struggle to do well and succeed in submission, that really turned me on.

Lucky Number Seven by G. Lipton

This story didn't do much for. I'm not at all sure what the point is. I guess perhaps it was written on a deadline to fill a book. That's the feeling I got about it. I saw no BDSM in it.

Mistress to You by Dante Davidson

I loved this one. It had some BDSM in it. It was really hot to my way of thinking. It was F/m which isn't usually what I look for in erotica but it worked for me!

Never Talk to Strangers by Cherie McIntosh

Based on one of my all time favorite tales, I loved this story! Not BDSM but very funny, fitting and clever!

Once Upon a Time by Anne Blakely

Another new fable that I loved, this has D/s in it and is very sexy if a little vague. It does rather capture the dream of D/s though!

Princess and the Penis by Ronald Keller

This was not my thing. For someone into the idea of having sexy while unconscious or asleep it might be very hot.

Queuing Up by Carole Few

I found this one to be a hot little public scene story! Wow! *fans self*

Raver Alie and the Glo-Stick by Melody Perry

This story was a little hit and miss with me. I didn't care much at first but in the end it was hot and funny. I like hot and funny!

Stealing Hearts by Emilie Paris

This story was sweet but it just didn't go far enough IMO. I wanted to see her spank him. *sigh*

Trials of Lady Vacarius by Sage Vivant

This is perhaps my least favorite of all the new fables. While reminding me of Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty, and at the same time making fun of it, I was tepid on the story. I couldn't decide whether to be pissed off at the massive organs, and so on or just to laugh about it. In the end I laughed. It is a silly story but it has it's moments.

Undressed by Jesse Nelson

"Stripped down and undressed, without the comfort of my standard uniform, I felt more free than I ever had before." That final sentence made this story worth the read for me.

Very Golden Goosing by Andre Farmer

This one was pretty hot. I liked it. Elevator sex is often quite enticing! There wasn't any real D/s in it but it still got the juices flowing.

Wicked Sisters by Mila Whitely

I was a little turned off by the negativity and vindictiveness of this story's main character. However, the part about spelling her sister's name with an "S" instead of a "C" was priceless to me. LMAO!

X-rated Wishes by Eric Williams

I love the original story this one was based on. This story was quite shallow though and didn't lead to the good lesson the original does. OTOH, I love anal sex. So it was good, in unrealistic, in parts.

You Don't Know Me by Isabelle Nathe

This was a cute, and hot take on Rumpelstiltskin! I liked it quite a bit. Tons of hot sex, the inner dilemma and clear lines to the original story all combined to make it enjoyable for me.

Zoe White and the Seven Whores by Thomas S. Roche

I liked this one overall. It ended happily. It had some humor. It had some hot sex. Works for me.

Some things I would like to know:

Did you like the book overall or not?

Yes, I did. I don't usually like short story anthologies but this one had much better stories than I expected. This particular area of stories from whence the sexy stories sprang in an area of literature I work with a great deal. So I liked that even more than most anthologies.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Some of the stories did show BDSM in my way, which is a very positive way and real to me.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

I liked a good many of the sex scenes in the book, yes.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

I did like some and not others. Mostly I enjoyed the stories. See my notes on the specific stories please.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Maybe, by some of them. In fact, I might look them up and see what else they have published.

What did you like best about this selection?

The clever twists, the humor, sex, sometimes, BDSM.

What did you like the least?

Anything that didn't really tell the story. The male POV on some of them. The "I'm just tossing this off because I'm in a hurry and under deadline" feel of one.

How would you have changed the story?

They could be longer, otherwise, I wouldn't change many of them at all. Most of them worked pretty well. I might just take out a few and look for alternate stories to replace them.

Our July BDSM, book of the month is The Challenge (Mass Market Paperback) by Susan Kearney

I hope many will join us this month in reading this book!
