Breaking the Girl by Kim Corum

Did you like the book overall or not?

I'm not really sure how I feel about it. It was kind of a yank the table cloth off of the table sort of book to me.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

No. At no time did either of the characters talk in plain terms about what they were doing or set limits though a safe word was introduced. For most of the book the lead female character was confused and therefore, so was I.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Mostly I didn't. Some gave me a tingle.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

No. There really wasn't much story to it. Other than, I hate him, I hate this. I love him. I love this. In an endless spiral.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Only if everyone wanted to.

What did you like best about this selection?

It was set in New Orleans though they didn't use the location well.

What did you like the least?

I disliked the girl in it, not ever knowing what she wanted or why, if the guy was abusive or not and so on. Ugh.

How would you have changed the story?

I would have like to have seen more complex characters and characters that were not so cliched.. The Dom should not always be handsome and rich for instance. The girl was in her 30's which was a bit of a differences from most book.

I would have liked to see them be more aware of what they were doing and why it was right for them. I would have liked more story and story development.

Kushiel's Scion by Jacqueline Carey.

Did you like the book overall or not?

Oh yesssss! This is the BEST of all the BDSM novels we've read IMO.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Actually, yes it does. More than any other of the books. The only major difference is the Gods themselves make a person what they want them to be. That part is fantasy but it's lovely that it gives them not on the right to be kinky but the imperative from GOD(s) to act on it!

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Yes, but I would have liked them to be more detailed and have more of them.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Yes, very much so! I was actually worried about this particular book focusing on the boy but it was GREAT! I loved it!

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Yesssss, please, many more!

What did you like best about this selection?

The boy's internal fight to accept himself and his needs/desires.

What did you like the least?

Nothing really. I expected perhaps a betrayal and a bit more intrigue but I'm relieved that didn't happen.

How would you have changed the story?

I wouldn't have. I truly wouldn't have.

NOW, what do YOU want to read in February, 2011?

Please vote!

:rose:

Voting closes December 15, 2010.

If you notice any books left out, would like to nominate a book or that I've left one in that we've already read, please let me know.

1.) Kushiel's Mercy, Jacqueline Carey

2.) Queen of the Darkness, by Anne Bishop.

"Queen of the Darkness" is the third and last book in Anne Bishop's extraordinary "Black Jewels Trilogy." This is a strong novel which truly enhances the material in the first two books and provides a most fitting conclusion to this epic series. I would strongly advise reading the books in order, beginning with "Daughter of the Blood" and then "Heir to the Shadows" to best appreciate the intricate story, characters and unique world that Ms. Bishop has created. I only wish the author had written a quartet!

3.) One Dark Night by Jaid Black.

Finally! A Jaid Black book with a meaningful plot! I was actually engrossed in the mystery of this little who-done-it and not just in the sex scenes. Reading many of Jaid's other stories is a cross between the story line of a cheap porno and the sickeningly sweet endings of a childhood fairy tale. But not this book! Amazing! I hope she keeps it up!

5.) Warrior's Woman by Johanna Lindsey.

Book Description:In the year 2139, fearless Tedra De Arr sets out to rescue her beleaguered planet Kystran from the savage rule of the evil Crad Ce Moerr. Experienced in combat but not in love, the beautiful, untouched Amazon flies with Martha, her wise-cracking, free-thinking computer, to a world where warriors reigns supreme--and into the arms of the one man she can never hope to vanquish: the bronzed barbarian Challen Ly-San-Ter. A magnificent creature of raw yet disciplined desires, the muscle-bound primitive succeeds where no puny Kystran male had before--igniting a raging fire within Tedra that must be extinguished before she can even think of saving her enslaved world. . .

6.) Wicked Pleasure by Jaid Black and Lora Leigh.

By CoffeeGurl (MA) - (TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Ties that Bind is one of the most smoldering erotic anthologies I've read as of late, and Jaid Black's Sins of the Father is the highlight of the book. Candy Morgan is James's nemesis. Her father had promised him a lucrative career and a place in the family, but then he discarded James without a moment's hesitation. Now Candy must surrender to James's dark desires and commands if she wants to keep her side of the business running. But little did she imagine that James had an unexpected agenda...

The erotic scenes in Father are insatiable beyond compare! The novella is full of Black's signature eroticism and mouthwatering descriptions. She is a great new voice in erotic fiction. I haven't been able to put down her books and I look forward to reading more of her stuff. Lora Leigh's Surrender, the other novella in Ties that Bind, is also a scorcher. These quickie reads will burn a hole in your sheets! I shall look into reading more of Ellora's Cave authors in the future. In the meantime, I recommend this book along with Jaid Black's The Possession.

7.) Obsession : an erotic tale by Vanderbilt, Gloria

Publisher Summary 2 New York social maven Priscilla Bingham discovers a hidden cache of letters that reveal her late husband's affair with a sophisticated dominatrix who has recorded the intimate details of their relationship, a finding with which Priscilla becomes increasingly obsessed. Publisher Summary 3
The marriages of desire . . .

From the multitalented and versatile Gloria Vanderbilt comes a passionate, sensual, witty, and puzzling tale of erotic obsession, beauty, and revenge, told in tandem by two women obsessed with the same man—and, ultimately, with each other.

Talbot Bingham is a renowned architectural genius who, with his formidable wife, Priscilla, creates an architectural community. When he dies unexpectedly in the middle of their tenth wedding anniversary celebration, the devastated Priscilla is left keeper of the flame of Talbot's genius. Going through her husband's archives, she comes unexpectedly upon a pile of neatly tied letters, and the shocking secret of her husband's intimate life—a discovery that shatters the foundation of her soul and spirit.

Obsession explores the mysteries of the human heart and the nature of sexuality and obsession, provoking questions about whom we choose to love, and why. The reader is left to decide if the other woman represents another facet of Priscilla, or if Priscilla her-self has invented the other woman who completed the world her husband so recently inhabited?

8.) The Vampire Queen's Servant by Joey W. Hill

Paranormal erotica from an award-winning author who stands out in a genre known for its out-of-the-ordinary love play." (Romance Studio)

Lady Elyssa Yamato Amaterasu Wentworth is a centuries-old vampire who's been given a new servant-Jacob, a total alpha male unaccustomed to submitting to any woman's wishes. What really binds Jacob to her are not her sensual midnight hungers, but something far more provocative.

It stirs her blood, renews her life, and awakens her soul like only true love can. The passion between Elyssa and Jacob yields something else unexpected-a shared history that reaches back through the centuries and is fated to challenge their destiny like nothing ever will again.

9.) Swallowing Darkness (Meredith Gentry, Book 7) by Laurell K. Hamilton

I am Meredith, princess of faerie, wielder of the hands of Flesh and Blood, and at long last, I am with child–twins, fathered by my royal guard. Though my uncle, Taranis, King of Light and Illusion, claims that he is the true father since he abducted me from my home, betrayed, and defiled me. And now he has branded my guards as a threat to my unborn children.

Bearing an heir has placed me halfway to my aunt’s throne, that much closer to my reign over the Unseelie Court–and well ahead of her son, my cousin Cel, in this race. Now I must stay alive to see my children born and claim my place as queen.

But not all in faerie are pleased with the news, and conspirators from every court in the realm plot against me and mine. They seek to strip my guards, my lovers, from me by poisoned word or cold steel. But I still have supporters, and even friends, among the goblins and the sluagh, who will stand by me.

I am Meredith Nic Essus, and those who would defy and destroy me are destined to pay a terrible price–for I am truly my father’s daughter. To protect what is mine, I will sacrifice anything–even if it means waging a great battle against my darkest enemies and making the most momentous decision ever made as princess of faerie.

10.) One Foot in the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 2) by Jeaniene Frost

You can run from the grave, but you can't hide . . .

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield is now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, working for the government to rid the world of the rogue undead. She's still using everything Bones, her sexy and dangerous ex, taught her, but when Cat is targeted for assassination, the only man who can help her is the vampire she left behind.

Being around him awakens all her emotions, from the adrenaline kick of slaying vamps side by side to the reckless passion that consumed them. But a price on her head—wanted: dead or half-alive—means her survival depends on teaming up with Bones. And no matter how hard she tries to keep things professional between them, she'll find that desire lasts forever . . . and that Bones won't let her get away again.

11.) Menage by Emma Holly

Bookstore owner Kate comes home from work one day to find her two flatmates in bed...together. Joe - a sensitive composer - is mortified. Sean - an irrepressible bad boy - asks her to join in. Kate's been fantasising about her hunky new houseshares since they moved in, but she was convinced they were both gay.

Realising that pleasure is a multi-faceted thing, she sets her cares aside and embarks on a menage a trois with the wild duo. Kate wants nothing more than to keep both her admirers happy, but inevitably things become complicated, especially at work.

Kate has told her colleagues that Joe and Sean are gay but the gossip begins when she's caught in a clinch with one of them in her lunch hour! To add to this, one of Kate's more conservative suitors is showing interest again, but she's hooked on the different kind of loving that she enjoys with her boys - even though she knows it cannot last. Or can it?

12.) Safe Word by Molly Weatherfield. From the author of Carrie's Story comes the continuing tale of a young woman's uncompromising sexual adventure.

Carrie leaves Jonathan, the S/M master who initiated her into a life of slave auctions, training regimes, and human "ponies" preening for dressage competitions. Whisked away to Greece by the demanding gentleman who has chosen her as his own, she learns new, more rigorous methods of sexual pleasure.

13.) Slaves of the Empire by Aaron Travis.
Steven Saylor in disguise, his hot porn still includes marvelous details of Rome at its dirtiest, wealthiest, and most kinky.

14.) Wild Rain by Christine Feehan

Feehan has a knack for bringing vampiric Carpathians to vivid, virile life in her Dark Carpathian novels, and in this new book, which builds on her short story "The Awakening," she focuses on a different kind of sensual predator—a half-human/half-leopard species of shapeshifters.

Mysterious freelance paramilitary operative Rio Santana is a member of this breed, but he's been banished from his clan and lives in a solitary rainforest dwelling. Enter Rachel Lospostos, who has marooned herself in the jungle to escape a group of murderers.

Blood runs hot between the two, both emotionally and literally—their first meeting is a near-terminal cat fight that leaves Rachel bedridden with a mangled leg and a broken wrist. As Rio cares for her, it becomes clear that their relationship is fated, but it may soon be cut short if they don't figure out who wants Rachel dead.

Suspense often takes a backseat to the protagonists' romantic feelings, but Feehan handles both elements skillfully, drawing villains who are sufficiently threatening and creating a romance that feels both destined and believable. Readers whose fantasies center on untamed wilderness and on untamed heroes who are as sensitive as they are strong will be seduced by this erotic adventure. Our February 2011 BOTM is Slaves of the Empire by Aaron Travis

Breaking the Girl by Kim Corum

Did you like the book overall or not?
It rather annoyed me actually … it felt as if I was watching a bouncing ball going this way and that as the author went from a thought, to a memory, to a feeling, to sex, then thought and so forth over and again.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?
No, to me it felt as if the author did some research on the lifestyle and wrote about it from that perspective rather than the reality of it.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?
I might have if they had been focused instead of filled with all the previously-mentioned bouncing about.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?
No, I felt like slapping the heroine and telling her to get over it or just move on. There wasn’t really a story by the way.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?
No.

What did you like best about this selection?
The heroine’s internal dialogue language was crisp and edgy which lent it a sense of realism.

What did you like the least?
The heroine (read my statement about slapping her!) and her pouty, victim, poor me lament throughout the entire book.

How would you have changed the story?
Honestly, I don’t know that this one could have been fixed without virtually starting over again. The entire premise seemed to be an internal dialogue (with some scenes) of “how did I end up here?” coupled with “why me?”. A bit of a different take from the BDSM books written by those who don’t know the lifestyle but think it is “hot” to write about, but still it made me feel as if the author didn’t really understand the lifestyle.

Yeah! Captiveadream!

:rose:

I have company!

:)

*HUGS*

I see neither of us liked the book. That sucks. Sorry.

You know what really pissed me off? That character was all like "I'm 30 something and my boobs luckily still point UP. Really? Cause I'm 50 and my boobs still point up too, WTF, bitch? Who WROTE this? How ageist are they?

I just heard or read something like this again recently. "I'm 30 something and luckily my boobs still bounce instead of flop." Fuck you! Again, I'm 50 and my boobs still bounce too. Get over it. LOL

Okay. Yes. Hot button issue for me right now. As if the down side of 30 is when the female body falls apart. Not hardly!

Anyway, thanks for joining me! Are you reading along on any other books?!

:D

Hey FurryFury,

I'm going to try to read Topping from Below and review at the end of the month (trying to be an obedient little reader don't you know!). I do admit that the title has me a bit on the negative side of the line but I'll get over it. *smile*

So, let's track down the author of Breaking the Girl and slap her silly (although my dislike of her was more on the pouty poor me attitude) ...

I agree with you about the age discrimination thing. I have a friend who just went through a breast reduction (at 60 years old), her breasts are now cute and perky ... no bra for her. So there! I also know couples in their 70s and 80s who are still very much in the lifestyle and happily active sexually (without the use of any strange pills). Actually, I think that sometimes we are much better when we age ... we take our time, we appreciate nuances, and we usually have little to prove.

I understand, Captiveadream,

Topping from below has a very negative connotation since it's what asshats who say they are Doms often accuse subs of when they don't like that the sub actually has limits and opinions. LOL

I agree about the slapping someone silly!

So glad you agree with me about the age discrimination thing. I know I like myself better now than ever before!

ToPPiNG FRoM BeLoW by Laura Reese

Did you like the book overall or not?

It was okay but not great.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

No. I really don't. First, of all anyone who researched electrical play would know you don't cross the heart, period. Second, too much non-consent was there. Third, the top didn't seem to care at all about Franny and often not about Nora, much less Ian or anyone else. That really pisses me off. Though in fantasy the uncaring top can really make me hot if done a certain way.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Some of them got to me. The I don't want it, oh GOD, I DO want it thing can really get to me in BDSM fantasies.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

No. I am sick of murder mysteries in which the kink practitioner is the killer. I was so hoping that Nora would find out she was wrong all along and learn that S/M wasn't at all what she'd thought it was but alas, it was not to be.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

If others voted for it I'd read it but not eagerly.

What did you like best about this selection?

Nora's internal conflict. The parts where it looked like "M." didn't do it and was teaching her what she really wanted and needed.

What did you like the least?

I hated the title which, incidentally, IMO, had NOTHING to do with the book.

I didn't like what happened with Ian.

I didn't like that "M" was the killer after all AND cared so little about the accident.

How would you have changed the story?

I would have like to have seen more complex characters, and story. Franny or someone else would have killed this sister, perhaps by accident.

Nora would have learned that BDSM is good for some people and not some dark, scary world. M, would have CARED and been more emotionally involved.

Whisked away to Greece by the demanding gentleman who has chosen her as his own, she learns new, more rigorous methods of sexual pleasure.

13.) Topping From Below by Laura Reese.

The title of this devilishly pornographic?albeit literate?novel is taken from the argot of sadomasochism and refers to a rebellious dynamic in which the dominant partner (the "top") is subtly manipulated by the submissive partner (the "bottom").

After her young sister, Franny, is found murdered?bound, gagged and mutilated?Nora Tibbs, a journalist for the Sacramento Bee, discovers in Franny's computer a diary that details her brief affair with "M.," an arrogant music professor in his late 40s. Cruelly exploiting the overweight, love-starved woman, M. forced Franny to submit to a humiliating gamut of outre sexual practices.

Convinced that M. is Franny's murderer, Nora sets out to prove his guilt by pretending to submit to his depraved aberrations. But, to her astonishment, she discovers a dark, pagan side of herself when M. enthralls her with intense, if perilous, sexual pleasure. Graphic descriptions of exotic sexual practices (bondage and discipline, sadomasochism, bestiality, etc.) accumulate, counterpointed by Nora's sweetly romantic relationship with a fellow reporter.

The suspense, a bit attenuated by thin secondary characters, also is muted by artless foreshadowing, but the conclusion is satisfying in a savage sort of way and Nora's plunge "down, all the way down" under M.'s manipulations will keep most readers gripped even as they're aware that Reese's shameless pandering is manipulating them in turn. Comparison to Story of O is well earned. 100,000 first printing; Literary Guild and Doubleday Recommended for adult fiction collections.

14.) Wild Rain by Christine Feehan

Kaden knows he's dying, but before he goes, he has one problem he needs to solve - he must ask his oldest friend Seth to take over as his beloved wife's Dom and Master after his death. Seth has always seen himself as the perpetual screw-up and Kaden as the strong and steady one, so his friend's request rocks his world.-

Now Seth finds himself immersed in a role he's far from comfortable with: inflicting pain to provide emotional comfort for the woman he's secretly loved for years. Can he deal with his crushing grief and learn the skills he must master in time to become THE RELUCTANT DOM?-

Warning: m/f/m menage, anal sex/play/toys, BDSM, bondage, D/s relationship, and the lesser-known "normality" of the world of BDSM.-

Any book you consider to have been pleasurable, and somewhat BDSM please share!

Better late then never?

Novebmer 2010 BOTM, Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho.

Did you like the book overall or not?

I liked it. This book is the book that really got me thinking about the mental aspect of sex and BDSM. Even better, it was based on a real person and her story.

In the interview in the back of the book Paulo was asked about this book and why he wrote it. Basically he said he always wanted to write a book about sex and that sex is so much more than physical. Limiting yourself to the physical act as defined by society is unfortunate.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

I do think BDSM was portrayed in a real way. Meaning there are so many different takes on it and ideas people have on it. In some ways the book was confusing because at one point the main character mentions BDSM along with the word putrid and in another instance she sees how it makes her free. I didn't agree with all of her BDSM partner's assertions either but some were spot on. "There is no greater pleasure than that of initiating someone into an unknown world. Taking someone's virginity--not of their body, but of their soul" for example.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

I did like some of them despite their non-graphic nature. Some of the scenes were dull and almost written out of a tech manual. I liked this scene: "he rubbed it up and down and when it touched her clitoris she lost all control....she entered a hole in her soul in which intense pain mingled with total pleasure, pushing her beyond all limits, she moaned and screamed her voice muffled by the gag..." That scene profoundly effected me and how I thought about BDSM and I bet it did the same to her no matter what others around her said. That was a real intense experience for her and she had not expected it.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Yes. I did enjoy the story, a very good love story.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Yes he is a very good author and always make you think in his books.

What did you like best about this selection?

I liked the diary entries and the way the main character and her mind, thoughts are right before us. Sometimes she was happy, other sad, but you got to know her as a person not just a prostitute. Sometimes she was pessimistic, other times positive and glowing. That can be hard to read at times when you as the reader are rooting for her, but that is real life.

What did you like the least?

I disliked that her lover was not the one who introduced her to BDSM. Still that may have been on purpose. The man who did introduce her to BDSM did say that she would be back, he had planted a seed. I wanted him to exlain more about BDSM after she had the orgasm, because she really wanted to know. But again that may have been on on purpose so she could find out the answers herself.

How would you have changed the story?

See above.

I am really sorry this is so late. I have had some real problems in my life and the book was put on the back burner for a while. I hope to get back on the train now.

Yes I read those parts over several times in the book. I have known you for a while and I really respect your opinion. But, I realized just that, we had different opinions on it. That is why this forum is so great because I can get different points of view and go back and look at something I read and see it that way.

So the cool part for me was when I did go back and look at the book, I did see what you were talking about and at the same time I remember the things that got me into it and BDSM. It has been about 7 years since I read it. That was fun! Thanks!

Topping from Below - Laura Reese

Did you like the book overall or not?

Nope. Mystery is generally not my cup of poison, nor are detective stories. I hoped that the BDSM element would make up for it but was grandly disappointed since the BDSM was unrealistic, abusive and, as is so very common, written as if the author was viewing the lifestyle from the outside (I can almost picture the mental processes of these authors – BDSM makes me so hot to read, but the people are sickos of course, still it is so very, very hot!). All of that being said, the author did not do a poor job with the mystery of the story, except for the fact that she took the easy way out by making the mean-old-dominant the bad guy and it would have been far more interesting had she given one last twist at the end of the story and not left it with the obvious conclusion.

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

No, it certainly wasn’t my style of BDSM and, I have to admit that if I saw a group in such a relationship, I would wonder about the mental health of most the people involved.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

I adore nonconsensual fantasy, if it is done well. There was too much of it in this book (some good, some not so good), but it was for me the most appealing aspect of this book.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

No, I did not and I’m still trying to figure out how the author thought “topping from below” was an appropriate title for this book.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

If I was locked in solitary confinement in prison and I had finished reading the writing on the walls, counting the number of bricks and singing 100 Bottles of Beer on the wall for the billionth time … perhaps.

What did you like best about this selection?

Finishing it.

What did you like the least?

Finishing the book and realizing that people who read it who know nothing of the lifestyle will have yet another example to confirm their belief that we are nothing more than perverts and wackos.

How would you have changed the story?

Seriously? First (and easiest), the author could have opted not to take the stereotypical ending of the cruel dominant as killer but, instead, worked in a final twist (I would have, for instance, loved to have seen something along the lines of: the sister’s former lover as killer motivated by his jealously about the intensity of her new relationship with M). Secondly, I honestly believe that authors ought to preferably participate in the lifestyle before writing about it or, at the very least, give it to those who do participate to proof and make suggestions for authenticity.

I so agree with you Captivedream!

Sorry you didn't enjoy it. I found the book difficult as well.

Ah, but half the point of a book club is to sometimes read those books which we might not otherwise read FurryFury.

I have heard of the book many times, now I have read it and, as my father was fond of saying, there is nothing to regret when knowledge has been gained. :cattail:
