The most sensual music?

"Madam, you have between your legs an instrument capable of giving pleasure to thousands, and all you can do is scratch it!" (the conductor Thomas Beecham to a cellist)

There are hundreds of priceless Beecham quotes, many undoubtedly apocryphal ...

"No operatic star has yet died soon enough for me."

"Try everything once except folk dancing and incest."

"Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away."

As for sexy music, I personally find Rodrigo's concerto a little hackneyed (great music certainly, just unfortunately clichéd). I agree on Daphnis and Chloe. Bolero (Ravel again) is wonderfully erotic, but only if you manage to keep in mind Bo Derek and not the ice-skater Jayne Torville!

*stalk*

(and don't be such a snob--that Roderigo Concerto is great)

I hope you're impressed. You're the only person I've ever stalked anywhere. :D

And yes you did say it was great--anyhow I know you're not really a snob, lol.

Viola-player jokes are the other standard ... just a taster:

What's the difference between a viola and a coffin?
The coffin has the dead person on the inside.

What do you do with a dead violist?
Move him back a desk.

What's the definiton of "perfect pitch?"
Throwing a viola into a dumpster without hitting the rim.

Why do violists stand for long periods outside people's houses?
They can't find the key and they don't know when to come in.

What's the definition of a minor second?
Two violists playing in unison.

Why is a viola solo like premature ejaculation?
Because even when you know it's coming, there's nothing you can do about it.

What's the most popular recording of the William Walton viola concerto?
Music Minus One

What's the difference between the first and last desk of a viola section?
1. half a measure
2. a semi-tone

I heard this one (being a singer) told something like this....Why are singers always late?
They can't find the key and they don't know when to come in. ~SMACK~

These two oldies I am still laughing at (hadn't heard them in a while!!!)

Thanks for the morning giggle

Sensual music? I'd definitely say the ballads on Phantom of the Opera, Sade has really sensual stuff too.

Yes, Sade has that smokey, breathy voice that will turn any song into a sensual one. I also find so many of the old R&B tunes have a 'lying in his arms - swaying to the music with your eyes closed - kind of affect.

without a doubt, Jennifer Rush's verson of "The power Of Love" will have to be included in any list...

I listen to quite a bit of early Genesis music when I'm writing. Just about everything they recorded up to the early 80s. I don't know what it is, but their music just sweats sensuality to me.

Rush hour was snarled today as an orchestra bus ran off the road. Injured in the accident were twelve musicians and a violist.

:rose:

Just piling on. I've never met a violist. ;)

Music for sex--different moods

Ideal orgy music--Lords of Acid, "Lust" Trust me, it works.

Some non-traditional sex music that you might not have worked with before:

-- Cocteau Twins. Good for orgies, but also for athletic fucking. I like "Pink Opaque" and "Treasure"...older albums.

-- Enya. This is for lovemaking. Period.

-- Brian Eno. Ambient #1: Music for Airports. Lovemaking, for sure.

-- Julee Cruise. You've heard her sing for David Lynch movies, particular the Twin Peaks/Fire Walk With Me flicks. If you were turned on by the dark twisted sensuality of those films, her music is for you. Angelo Badalamenti does the score. Hypnotic and disturbing.

Period pieces for sex parties. Michael Nyman, "Prospero's Books," "Drowning By Numbers," and "Six Days, Seven Nights."
Also Wim Mertens, "The Belly of An Architect" film score.

Good all around sex music--Tangerine Dream. Try Stratosphere, Tangram (you'll recognize much of this from the movie, "Risky Business"), Optical Race, Miracle Mile, Tyranny of Beauty, Goblin's Club. Also, don't forget Orchestral Manoeuvres In the Dark. If that isn't the name for a band that supports sex....

H4T

H4T,

Thanks for an intriguing list of suggestions with some alluring commentary. You have given me much to check out. I want to leave now for my favorite record store (Amoeba Records in LA).

Hi upfront!

I know that I'm so late responding, I lost the thread location and only figured out how to do a search the other day. You see, I'm a violist. Really!

(After all those viola jokes, I figure that I can get away with that excuse!)

I personally love to listen to the Rodrigo, the 2nd movement is glorious. There is a jazz take on it that is also very good. Does anyone know who the artist is?

A funny rehearsal story about the Rodrigo, some poor oboist had never heard the piece and was called in as a sub at the last minute. The poor girl was attempting to sight-read the big solo. She got lost among all the sub-divisions and had to live through the entire string section singing her solo for her! The shame! The infamy! Corrected by STRING players!

More viola jokes:

What's the definition of a cluster chord?
A viola section playing on the C string.

What's the difference between a violin and a viola?
A viola holds more beer.

Fond thoughts to all,

Miriam

Miles Davis & Rodrigo

Miles Davis did his version of part of "Concierto de Aranjuez" in the CD "Sketches of Spain."

On a warm summer night, with the windows open, candles burning, a few drinks....put on Enigma with the volume at about a 6 and seduce away....

If I'm looking for romance, Jim Brickman, particularly "Angel Eyes" and "Lake Erie Rainfall"....

hello, I just discovered this thread, and I can't believe no one has even mentioned the best singer ever, Frank Sinatra. In terms of pure romantic music, give "I've got you under my skin" a listen. Yes, Diana Krall's version is good, but her's is much more restrained. Frank's is joyous! Rock n roll is great for quick, sweaty sex, but for a long night (or afternoon) of romance and seduction, Sinatra is the best.

Lightnin,

Now I love it when Hendrix slips in some bars from Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night" into his version of "Wild Thing."

I do a double play of Sinatra and Nat King Cole for beautiful, romantic male vocalists (and a line-up beginning with Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald) for female vocalists.

Some classic rock songs take the time to simmer us up into a sweat (I'm thinking of "Light My Fire" and "Ready for Love" by Bad Company).

Since my home is LA, I must include lyrics from a favorite Sinatra song: "LA is my Lady."

Trendyreadhead: What Enigma CD is your favorite?

The music she moves to, is music that makes me a dancer
I brought her my wildest of dreams, and she came up with the answer
I leave behind a part of myself, whenever i leave her
But oh, when i'm back in her arms
She smiles and then - i am home again

'cause l.a. is my lady
She's always there for me
L.a. is my lady
She knows how to care for me
No lady's sweeter - you know it the moment you meet her

I've been in love more times, than i care to remember
And love's kept me cool in july and warm in december
It may not have lasted, but each time i thought it was heaven
You name it, i've been there and back
Lookin' for someone who - i'd be faithful to

L.a. is my lady
She's always there for me
L.a. is my lady
She knows how to care for me
She's good to me - yeah she's good to me

And that's why
L.a. is my lady - l.a. is my lady
And you're lookin' at a man who - doesn't ever plan to
Kiss his lady bye-bye

When I was just a lad, I lost my virginity to a 35-year-old stripper named (appropriately enough) Virginia. She put Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys by Traffic on the stereo. To this day, I think it is the sexiest piece of music I have ever heard.

GREAT TUNE!!!! I saw Traffic in concert in the early 90s. Great show, and I can definitely see the sensuality in "Low Spark..."

no stairway?

ok, one song i am quite surprised that none of the Zeppelin fans included was Stairway to Heaven. With all of the different elements in this song, how is it not right for a romantic encounter? You can dance to it, you can certainly make love with it playing. Heck, it even provides a nice back drop to the afterplay and imminent nap that follows. i used to have a mixed disc with a bunch of romantic songs on it. I think it was comprised mostly of a UK band called HIM, their stuff is kind of hard to find in the US except for Razorblade Romance.
anyway, back to the list:

Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin
Nothing else Matters-Metallica <---best metal ballad EVER!!
Gone with the Sin
One last Time \
Beautiful > HIM
The Sacrament /
November Rain- Guns n Roses
Wicked Game- HIM covered it, i think Chris Isakk did it first

ok, theres my unorganized list. I'm sure i forgot something though...

Your love is a razorblade kiss/sweetest is the taste from your lips

If I am going to pick a Zeppeling song for this, it wouldn't be "Stairway," but it would be "What Is and What Should Never Be". :D
