The Nail Thread

I am a girl that never wears nail polish on my hands...I have busy hands that I expect to do a lot of work. In the garden. Around the house. As a health care worker. As a fiber artist. As a musician. So my fingernails are always short and clean (after working) and tidy. Never bitten. Well trimmed. Utilitarian.

However...my toenails...these are always some shade of purple. I have over a dozen different colors, some with sparkles. Makes me super happy. They are always well maintained...and I do them myself ~ don't trust anyone else.

I may get brave enough to post a pic. We'll see.

Kisses.
Happy fingernails and toenails.

In the past, yes, I would have had hard working hands that would scorn nail polish. Now it is more possible for me. I do have to keep them short as I play guitar.

Impressed with your dedication to purple for the toes. And that you do them yourself. I need professional help with the toes - I can't see well enough to do them myself! :D

A pic would be nice...;)

For my Christmas stocking G got me ( well, I helped him get me) a heat sensitive nail polish that goes violet when cold and pink when warm. We both love me wearing this. :).

I only really where toenail varnish because fingernail varnish doesn't even last a day.

Re nail shape, pay attention to your nails! Mine do funny things that they didn't used to, which is ok, I don't like super long nails, peraonally, and practically it's a joke for me. :D. But I cannot grow them as long because of the shape of them, and the shape is different on each finger, some curl in, some kind of curl up, many are lopsided. My thumbs have remained pretty normal.

G's are super off because of psoriasis. But he doesn't care, :). He has read the forum and knew I was plotting nail painting, but he was really sweet about it, and said 'not the thick purple that lasted weeks' and I was thinking of using a dark greeny one I love because I think it's quite masculine, but instead he said he'd be brave and we have gone for a dark mulberry opi colour called 'Muir, muir on the wall' with some nails inc Hereford square ( a sort of holographic irregular foil thing...big glitter., over the top.

I rarely buy nail polish now, I have a hefty stash but I saw a beautiful I true looking for glitter for cookie, or rainbow glitter nails, slurred accross the hand and I thought....hmm, if I had a yellow...... I'd love it, but for someone who doesn't where finger nail polish often it seems too extravagant, Also, I am not as dexterous as I used to be! During last year of pre uni education one of my close friends and I used to paint our nails in stripes and stuff, free hand. Mine were ALWAYS awful :D but better than I would manage now, Hers were incredibly wonderful.

Anyway.....I'll get that picture soon.

I have a single yellow bottle of polish, I never wear it. I only bought it for a special design. (^.^) Yellow looks bad on me, my skin turns pink. But it is a very cheerful color, and so eye catching.

I love the color changing polish, I do not own any like that, but I've seen pictures that looked so cool.

My nails on certain fingers will change shape if I have issues for too long. When it's kept under control they tend to be ok. When they're not though, my pictures will probably become more... Creative.

(*^_^*) I look forward to pretty pictures.

Purple is a lovely color. Painting my finger nails is kind of silly, it lasts a day or two before it starts chipping. I try to prolong this with top coats and whatnot, but it never lasts. f^_^; I get a great deal of joy out of the process of painting them though.

My toe nail polish lasts forever though. (^_-)

Thank you :rose: And sure it will.

Hee! Thanks! :cattail:

I often like to do my fingernails a different colour to my toenails. Is that bad form?

Not at all. (^ω^)

That's my issue with my index fingers, especially my right index finger. They're lopsided and look weird, the side next to the thumbs starts to curl in. With nail polish it isn't as bad, because if it's all single color it masks the effect a little, but if I'm wearing none, it really shows.

I'm just finding this thread, so I have a couple of things but didn't want to quote extensively. Here goes :)

As to peeling nails, sometimes they get separated into layers and tend to stay that way until you can "heal" them. They can get separated by trauma, even something as simple as using a very coarse nail file on them. Once they separate, the top layers can peel and peel, and never mesh with the rest of the nail again. This has happened to me a few times, and if you coat the nail with a nourishing base coat and keep it coated long enough for the peeled section to grow out and be snipped off, it stops the peeling. Just slather the stuff on daily. It's clear, so no worries as to what it looks like for a week or so.

Giving your nails rest periods is a great idea. I am not one to wear polish on my fingernails, but living in a climate where I wear sandals all year long I literally had polish on my toes for years and years straight. I would just paint right over top of the old stuff usually  but I would take the polish off maybe, MAYBE once every six months and start over. Well, no surprise, my toe nails turned yellow and looked.. odd. I thought I had a fungus, but I talked to my Dr. and she said to just give them a rest. Sure enough, as the nail grew out they were perfectly fine, and I wear less polish on my toes now. They get a rest pretty often! Poor little things

As to keeping polish on my fingers, when I do wear it I use this stuff. Orly puts it out, and its a rubberized bonder. Just like it says :D You put it on as a base coat, and apply polish while it is still wet. I don't even bother to put a top coat on, this stuff is great. I'm in the kitchen every day cooking and washing up and my polish stays on perfectly for at least a week. More like 10 days. Awesome stuff, totally worth the price, which is not great. I think it's around $8 a bottle? I don't look anymore, I just buy the stuff because it rocks.

It's great seeing everyone's pics and getting their thoughts. I'll post a pic next time I paint up :)

Mine as well, curly. I chalked this up to some trauma to my nail beds when I was a kid (in a car accident and my hands actually went through the dashboard of the car, broke both thumbs but somehow no fingers). So now, unless you or Elle had similar trauma to your hands I will have to rethink this? I find that if I keep paint on them as they grow, it's enough to stop the curling. But the paint has to be pretty thick and heavy... not very nice. So I usually don't paint my nails. Mine are less noticeable without colour.

Thanks for this tips CnC. :) That rubberized basecoat looks interesting. Does it make the polish look weird? I like a super shiny topcoat usually. I would like the polish to last longer then a few days with touch ups.

Speaking of super shiny topcoats, I have one matte polish that I fell in love with. It's actually similar to what's on my nails right now (1st post). Maybe a bit lighter. Matte leaves me feeling "unfinished" because it's not shiny. I made an exception for this one color.

I stuck my fingers in a hole yesterday and that ruined my nail polish, so I painted them today. Naturally I took the pic before cleaning the bits where I painted outside the lines.

That's s tea mug btw, just had to hold something to get a pic that didn't make my fingers look too freakish.

The color's called Before Dark - Winter Sky and it's a really dark purple that can look almost black. I like how shiny it is. :)

Intersting. I'm also curious whether it alters the polish finish??

I'm lucky in my nails. They grow long, strong, and fast. I rarely bother to paint them though, because I chip them at the drop of a hat. A manicure might last two days, if I'm incredibly careful. I've wondered about shellac, but I've heard that it can be damaging to the nails. Presumably the rubberized bonder doesn't have that problem?

Of, course this^ would entail actually figuring out how to do them myself and not have them look completely awful.

No, I don't notice anything different at all with the rubberized bonder underneath. It's quite liquid, not gooey at all.

My nails are also pretty strong, and the whites of my nails are pretty white, unless I have been into beets or something lately. Which happens a lot  People compliment my French manicure all the time, but.. nope! Just my nails.

Seela, I love that mug! Reminds me of a Danish bowl I have. And your fingernails don't look messy. Mine are way worse when I first paint them... I usually just let it wear off of my cuticle. A shower takes care of it pretty well.

That color is like red plums, seela. It's pretty :)

My nails are also very strong, probably the one part of me I can safely say that I like. :) I think I'm going to try this base coat.

That's not a man foot!

Love the duochrome flaked polish. Turquoise blues are on my favorites list.

It is. I only showed the toes on his less psoriasis ravaged foot to try not to scare people :D but they look rough. :D. His feet are REALLY wide too.

He has beautiful hands though,:heart::heart:

 It really doesn't look like it to me. I think maybe when people say "warning" I think so much worse than what is actually there. Also, where I grew up, there were lots of bare feet and... Well, "hobbit feet" weren't even close to the kinds of OMG what have you been walking in there. (>_<)

Warning...man foot.

I have turquoisey blue toenails, so it seems to be the en vogue colour open lit board right now. ( G chose mine).

Ha! I am super impressed he let you paint his toes sparkly. Tell him it gave me a smile!!!

:D <---- this big!

I sometimes use nail polish as a very effective bargaining chip to get my 6 yr old to let me cut her nails.

Nothing fancy, just the pearlescent pink kids polish that used to belong to my older daughter.

I completely understand this struggle. Children are hard to bargain with. I often find myself arguing with a 2 year old over eating. She's so dainty and eats like a bird
