if you really want to weep for the future of the english language, i'll send you a sample of student writing.

Here, Silver...some gems that I have saved from in-class writing samples:

If one did not think critically then they wouldn’t understand things like one may.

Critical thinking makes reading and writing excited.

Without being able to read or write then you wouldn’t be able to write, or understand what you are reading.

With new ways of writing, people now have a new way to write.

I am now patting myself on the back for my writing abilities.

Good, because if you ever doubt them again, I will bestow upon you the most horrific paper that I ever had the displeasure/pain of reading and grading.

remind me some time to tell you what i said to the the student who emailed me three days before the semester started one spring semester to ask me how much writing we would be doing in my class.

when i replied that it was a writing class, hence the title, Introduction to Scientific and Technical writing, he then proceeded reply to my to ask me if i could make the course less work because he needed to focus on his engineering classes because they were more important to him as an engineer than my class would ever be to him or any engineering major.

Sounds like the nursing student sections of Comp II that I used to teach. So how did you respond?

One former student of mine (a native of Michigan's Upper Peninsula) handed in an in-class writing assignment with the sentence "People in Southern Ohio don't know the intelagent way to do things."

It was an in-class assignment, so I merely circled the misspelled word and gave him full credit for his effort, but not before I'd made copies of his paper and put them in my colleagues' mailboxes.

Here's the odd thing: I recognize that "style" as belonging to a certain member here from my lurking in other forums. I've looked at that member's earlier posts because I wondered if it was intentional, and it appears they CAN spell correctly when they want to. Or, at least they used to be able to. It looks to me like they adopted the above style to develop a certain persona, or decided to write as they speak maybe.

I hope it's the same person, because I shudder to think there's more than one of them out there. To me, it's not cute or funny, just irritating to read/try to decipher when I come across it in threads. If the whole point of discussion boards is to communicate via the written word, why would someone (alts/trolls excluded) purposely make themselves less comprehensible, and portray themselves as ignorant and having a poor grasp of their native language?

Unfortunately, this person is hardly the only such poster at Lit. I know someone who has a graduate degree who sometimes posts in this same manner, not unlike the use of text-speak. Yikes is the only civil response.

Just don't ask me to explain WTF is going on with it as I haven't a frelling clue. Am tempted to leave the PC on and the tab open later just in case it decides to lock me out again!

When someone that you loved and now have a supposed "friendship" with doesn't bother to call for DAYS after he knows you've had surgery. Inconsiderate - and REALLY pisses me off.
