Tick tock - Tik Tok

Is this even a political issue? Ultimately is China gaining useful data and intelligence from TikTok that they can use to harm Americans?

If they are, then ban it.

It's an insanely popular app in the US. Obviously 47 reversed course from 45 on policy support, while 46 signed the law that would lead to the banning.

I tried it for a month and ultimately deleted it. I tend to watch reels since I already have Facebook....but noticed most are copied directly from TikTok (not sure how that is done)

I don't know what SCOTUS will do, but I'm opposed to the government trying to ban a social media platform. I don't care who owns it. People should be free to participate in it if they want to. It's not government's place to ban something like this.

In my view, the unrestricted flow of information in the long term benefits the cause of freedom. There may be some very limited sense in which China can adversely affect the US by controlling Tik Tok, but a) that adverse effect is offset by the benefit and enjoyment US consumers obviously get from Tik Tok, and b) that adverse effect likely is offset in the long term by accepting the idea that the government should control what social media platforms we can use.

The issue is the algorithm which can be manipulated to show you what they want you to see. It's actually the problem with all platforms.......you aren't making the choices....they are. In terms of China, it's meant to disrupt for their country's gain.

You are still making choices. You choose to use the platform. I believe people should have the right to make that choice. I don't want my government to have the power to take that choice from me.

Yes and when people choose to use it, they have no control over the content....the Chinese government does. And that's a security concern for the US.

Honestly, I don't understand what the problem is. Business, advertising, and media are manipulative. They always have been. But I have accounts on multiple social media platforms, and I see how I'm fed information according to algorithms, and I don't care. I don't see it as government's business. I don't want the government to be involved in any way in determining what I can say and what I can see. That seems FAR worse to me than anything these platforms do, even if somebody in China owns them. I always have the choice to decide whether the good I get from the platform is outweighed by the bad of knowing it's influenced by China. That should be MY choice, not the government's.

The government in the US doesn't control the content. In fact, when they do, and are discovered, the courts and the Congress take action to stop it from happening. (One of the things working for us right now) we've done the same to TikTok.

The Chinese government deciding what content to show the American people for propaganda purposes

They use their app to disrupt political discourse for their gain.
I understand that. I don't understand that our government needs to protect us against "misinformation." It's up to me to determine what sources of information I have. I don't want the government to protect me by banning social media platforms that millions of Americans enjoy.

It's not about that. They are actively working against our interests through the app. That is an attack on our country. It's not about the users... It's about making sure their interests don't supercede our own. If the Chinese don't control it, then the value of the app is the same but the motives are not.

I don't know what that means. How are they attacking our country? By knowing individual American consumer interests? Anybody, anywhere can find that out and freely exchange it with anyone else. I don't want my government doing this. I think it's wrong.

By pushing videos that disrupt. By pushing propaganda videos into your mix.

And yes, by knowing your habits so that they can better influence you with other videos.

I get that you object. Just trying to help explain why the law was passed.
