To an extent, a key role of the State is to protect people. It's why the State has coercive power in the first place. However, in a representative/democratic/participatory state, the idea is for that power to be vested in someone only with the consent of the governed. There's that blasted word again, consent. I have come to believe - there was always hate, prejudice, and bigotry in people, both left and right. Trump, by being so vulgar and brash, throwing norms and traditions into the wind (in the name of being an outsider), gave them permission to bring it out and openly display those ugly feelings. He was doing it for his own benefit, but people were finally charmed by someone who made it ok to be "who they are."

This is what scares me - even after Trump is long gone - the liberation of these people won't be. They will find someone else who will act the same way. And there will be someone else who will use them like Trump did.

For this to happen in the US - where people kept politics and religion to themselves, and came together despite differences, is sad. I remember when what Bill Clinton did was termed a sacrilege, and yet Trump is given a pass. Why? Like a grandmom who pampers her grandkids with what they want so they behave how she wants them to, he has endeared himself to them. And they will act at his urging. No surprise that Jan 6th happened.
