And for my Australian friends on here, why do you all still sound so British? We yanks lost our English accents a couple hundred years ago.

Simply because you kicked out the British early in your colonization and Australia never did. We kept their education, government and grammar to this day. Australia is still a member of the Commonwealth countries that was part of the British Empire.
