In what context? If it was to punish someone for a slight it would probably push me further away.
With my ex I used to try and practice it to stop myself blowing up at him. Just delayed the inevitable. Now, I go into shut down, but do try to communicate. It borders on silent treatment because the other person feels shut out.
 
Not at all. It would leave me feeling hurt to be shut out, then I'd get pissed off.

My ex was manipulative like that. It made me resentful.

Two adults should be able to communicate, even if it's "I don't want to talk right now."
I've gotten better at "I'm feeling .... So will likely be a little quieter than usual". Working through feelings takes time.

When I was a kid I thought the silent treatment was like a super power. My great Nan was the queen of the silent treatment. She could go a full day saying nothing to my great grandfather. Well, other than "I'm not talking to you. You figure out why" and then "dinners ready" if he let it go that long.

Yeah I can see that, as a method to calm down I can see it as useful but as a way of punishing a partner it would just make me distant
