Agreed. My backup oboe is a Yamaha student model, but it definitely holds a candle to my Fox pro horn. Biggest diff is the Fox centers pitches a lot better, and, of course, has the pro keyworks like low Bb and the 3rd octave key. I did audition a pro Yamaha oboe, but it was nearly indistinguishable in pitch and timbre from the student model.
(Another big plus for the Fox? I was less than a day's drive to the factory. Got to audition like six instruments.)
When I was teaching I'd loan the Yamaha to students for concerts. Their school instruments were crap. I don't know why they do that - I've lost students due to unplayable school instruments.
