What is the best war movie?

We were soldiers . Saving private Ryan. My favorites and Braveheart will always be at the top

I watched a Dutch film called Black Book which was pretty good.

The Deer Hunter
M.A.S.H.
Empire of the Sun
Born on the Fourth of July

To name a few...

Two pages and no Kubrick? Full Metal Jacket is one of the greatest ever, and Paths of Glory is pretty great (more anti-war perhaps, but shouldn't we all be?).

Patton, A Bridge Too Far, The Longest Day, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Stalag 17, Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan... there's too many! Also Hell Is For Heroes was pretty good (Steve McQueen is awesome, Great Escape too). Were Eagles Dare, Guns of Navarone, Kelly's Heroes and Hamburger Hill are movies that isn't (or shouldn't be) great, but I still find myself loving to watch them if they are on... ... oh, and Das Boot!

Oliver Stone's Vietnam trilogy is great: Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Heaven & Earth.

If you take holocaust movies into consideration the list just grows further... what was the question again? :)

Could Casablanca be called a war movie? Then there's your answer!

WWII band of brothers and the pacific. Hands down two of the best miniseries on WWII.

We were soldiers is another good one.

i dunno if BOB stands as a movie but i agree it's outstanding. there were little, if any, 'verly dramatic areas in it. the best line that came out of the series was spoken in the scenes at the beginning of the battle of the bulge, the one where dick winters responds toa cooment about their forthcoming encirclement by german forces: we're paratroopers, lieutenant; we're supposed to be surrounded. brilliant!

saving private ryan for the sheer realism of the d-day landings. the hand-to-hand fight in the village between the german and the GI really disturbed me for some reason.

Big red one, Saving private Ryan, The last Samurai, Shoulders and saints, ... Dose Band of brothers count?
