thankyou catalina, i agree that compassion is most likely a genetic survival trait..."normal" to most people. i wonder what causes a person to lack compassion though.
{as a parent i often look at undesirable traits and wonder what causes them in the hope that knowing this will make me a better parent.}
from a bdsm perspective...would a sadist cause pain if the masochist didn't consent? with most of the sadists i have talked to i very much doubt it...this is the line between bdsm and abuse.

Yes. Also, I am sometimes mean because I am full of spite and malice. Many things and people irritate me no end. A world of shiny, people would be like suffocating in cotton candy.

ok, this isn't a lit specific "she said something mean" question....i'm asking peoples opinions on the presence of evil in human nature.
i'm asking why a man emotionally abuses his wife. i'm asking why people turned in their jewish friends to the nazis. i'm asking why there ae workplace bullies. i'm asking why people dish out racial abuse...

i want to know peoples opinions of why certain people are so lacking in guilt or compassion that they can kick the defenceless

everyone gets testy sometimes, everyone snaps when a stupid question is asked for the umpteenth time or when people just don't listen.

In my opinion , very humble because I'm not a psychologist although for my work I often deal with an any kind of exemple of human beings , the lack of empathy with others or worse of compassion for the weakers or defencelesses is a matter of frustration . I'll try to explain my thoughts ( not easy tho , cause I'm not English mother language ).

If a person has a compressed ego and an envious nature and in his/her mind he /she feels other people are better than him /her cause more interesting , more beautiful , more powerful with a larger success and popularity in life , his /her nature will bring that person to behave in a destructive way towards other people he /she perceives as emotionally weaker .

In my experience men who abuses of wives ( emotionally or phisically ) usually are the same who are scared of women 's wittiness and capacities to deal with life . They feel the need to put them under a control made of continue diminutions or worse fears.

Kids or guys who bullies other kids , whatever for racial reasons or not , are the same who perceive themselves as losers in a wider social and cultural context .
Its a matter of warped power of twisted sense of self - assurance.

The more one person is strong and aware of oneself and sure of his capacities , skills , besides able to accept his limits , the more he is compassionate with weakers , emphatetic with diversities and generally understanding.

Isn't that indeed the trait which makes the differences between real Dom / mmes aware of his /her strenght who are mainly caring and understanding with their subs and those horrible fakes who want just satisfy their lack of self - confidence thought abusive and disturbing behaviours ?

Yes... this applies across the board, actually. Horses do this as well, because in a herd, there is a complex caste system that sometimes applies even to the birth ranking of the foals of the mare. My mare is a middle of the road horse, not the lead mare, but not the peon either. Her filly could get away with bullying the adult horses that were lower on the totem pole than my mare, and they'd take it. And when she was picked on by the higher ranked mares and their foals, she'd often go over and bite one of the lower ranked horses, as if to say 'at least you can't boss me around and drive me from the food'.

And it's definitely true of people as well.. frustration, whether at not being capable of climbing the social ladder, or at not being able to make themselves more desirable company, can lead to bullying and nastiness to those even less fortunate as well as those more fortunate.

You really know how to ask the easy questions with the obvious answers, don't you?

The only answer I know of, besides all the nature, nurture, and chaos theory stuff, is this: people are evil (1) because they can be and (2) because it's often percieved as easier, not to mention funner, than being good.
