Who is In California?

Hey, nice to see a local. Did you dare see the Marley biopic? As Chris Blackwell said, "I understood why they made it... But there's only one Bob."

Here comes the rain again...
I haven’t seen it yet. I kinda want to since it fits in with my BHM unit

I understand that the movie limits itself to one particular chapter of Bob's life, and a particularly dramatic chapter at that, which seems a good call. But really, the history of Jamaica is sufficiently complex, and Marley's life so full, that a large canvas canvas is really necessary. I've read the biography "Catch a Fire" by Timothy White, and that's an excellent telling. There's stuff in there about how Bob came into possession of a ring that had belonged to Haile Selassie, and it it is almost supernatural in its mysticism. In a movie, this might come off a cod superhero stuff, though. In any case, great read, and great artist....

I’ll do some digging! It might not be child appropriate, but for my own personal interests I’m all about it

Oic, you are teaching the course. I assumed you were taking or auditing it. Yes, the book would be rather ambitious for young initiates. The film is likely a perfect entry point.

Perf. I’ll have to watch and take notes

Well I imagine the film would appeal to young viewers in its broadest strokes, dramatizing as it does the events surrounding a failed assassination attempt on Marley's life. His response and public reemergence is both legendary and near-mythical. The film will appeal to young viewers' sense of justice, I should think. Marley's story is also one that makes a good framework discussing the role and purpose of the artist, given how impactful he was on his society in his time.
