Why??

For the most part I will leave negative comments up. I'm not talking the ones that tell me my grammar is bad they are simply stating the obvious.

I'm talking about the ones that tell me I suck as a writer. That's fine. Like LC said this is online and that's their opinion. They are welcome to try and get whatever thrill they get from making such a comment.

But I do not allow them to cuss me. It's my story, my comments page, and nope sorry my one rule. In my day to day I cuss like a... well construction worker (since I am one) but I do not do it in posts, comments, or PMs. If I do use a word like that I'm not directing it at others.

It's so very easy to be rude online. Simple even. As writers, Lords of Words, we should be able to do better.

Good point on everyone having their own code so to speak. Personally profanity does not bother me in comments. I swear a blue streak myself so don't feel its right to have a stance against it.

The one thing that has led me to delete a comment is when they advertise stories by other authors.

Here and there I don't care it depends on the context. For example "reminds me of Ahabscribe's story...." or "shades of alwayswantedtoo.... that's fine.

But I have had a couple of "If you liked this check out .... by so and so his stories are great!

Now odds are these people mean nothing by it and honestly it depends on the author named. But I had a slew of anonymous posters heralding the works of a particular author and I am fairly certain it was the author himself.

Sorry I am not your billboard.

I get your point, but from what I have seen here(not so much in the forum, but site wide) is that a "negative" comment is anything that so much as says, "Good story, but....

Once there is a but it is now perceived as negative(not by all, but many) and it is now an anymouse picking on them.

The authors that remove comments that are not rude or nasty, but simply offering constructive criticism or even trying to give a couple of pointers, to me have no desire to become better authors and are here for the "You're the best ever"

The writers that can see constructive feedback for what it is and not get in a snit about it is someone looking to improve.

I(and I stress I, this is my opinion only) have no respect for authors who only leave up the glowing remarks and get rid of anything that contradicts their place as the most awesome author here.

The irony is that at least for my stories, I WISH I'd get more comments that are constructive feedback--you know, the things that worked well and what didn't, etc. I get too many of the "this is a great story" comments and almost nothing useful.

On a side note, I do find it funny when someone goes into a category they find distasteful to leave a comment about how the story is wrong. One of my non-consent stories had one of these comments--I find it too amusing.

You can always ask for fuller feedback on a designated story on the "Story Feedback" forum.

Some append a request for feedback on their stories too and probably get more of it thereby.

Why do people who leave negative feedback on stories always post as ANONYMOUS??

I have asked myself the same thing on many occasions. In fact, I have remarked about it in response to some of the comments that I've received, and in support of other authors. I support all calls to remove the right of people to post anonymously if they can't do so responsibly. I have wondered how difficult it would be to block URLs from which more than (say) five different comments have been either deleted by the writers or received official complaints from the writer or other readers.

I decided to address the issue in my open letter Dear Anonymous if anyone cares to have a look.

Over the past few days I have found the Author's Hangout and this Story Feedback forum fascinating. If any of the authors here has time to read any of my stories (just pick one) and give me some pointers about what I could have improved upon, I'd be grateful. My PM box is full, but my e-mail address, YM and Skype contacts are right there.
